Dd notified of new Apple tag with her since early hours - advice?

Dd is 22, at uni, lives alone in flat with 24 hour reception (manned 24 hours) we visited her yesterday and went for brunch this morning, this evening she's had a notification that a new AirTag has been with her since 5.01am and shows the walk we took to and from the cafe this morning. She's checked everything and can't find anything, has anyone had this and it's been a mistake or should we be very concerned?

@Gingernaut

It's the size of a coin.

She needs to systematically search every part of her bag and coat and not be so stupid as to leave her bag and coat unattended again.

Victim-blaming. Excellent. Of course we blame the woman AND call her stupid. Of course.

@inspiration101

i’ve use these Apple tags on my teenager to keep track of him as he keeps turning off his location on his phone. was very disappointed when he got a notification giving the game away & found the disc in his coat. this is worrying for your daughter some one has planted the apple tracker somewhere in her. Does she carry a bag it’s got to be somewhere very. lose to her .

😱 you tried to track your DS?

iknowimcoming · 04/04/2022 19:50

To clarify a few things

  1. My Dd is not stupid Grin
  2. She has searched (thoroughly - see point 1!) everything she had with her on the walk and found nothing.
  3. The Apple support team remotely accessed her phone and talked her thru moving it around her (tiny) flat to try and locate the tag and couldn't find anything - hence why they/we think it is some kind of glitch
  4. The metal detector comment was mostly a joke (although dh does have one) but if the trick Apple have done to ascertain if it's a glitch proves it's not then it would mean that the AirTag has been very cleverly hidden somewhere and tbh if that's the case then I probably would take the bloody metal detector with me!

Thanks very much to everyone who has been supportive, I will update tomorrow with the outcome Smile

We are away for a few days and funnily enough, when I have checked my phone when we have been in the car, Ds’s AirPods come up on my phone. I didn’t know how these things worked. I hope it’s a glitch OP and nothing else.

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 20:11

I read the thread title and the whole Portugal Spain tracking thing came into my mind for some reason!

Anyway hope you sort it OP. I'm sure there'll be a perfectly logical solution

NeverChange · 04/04/2022 20:15

Was convinced apple would have a simple explanation.

Try not to worry & hope there is a reasonable explanation.

Airtag announcements to a phone that is not the one the airtag is linked to offers you the option to disable the airtag (I know this because DH airtag showed on my phone).

She should be able to disable the airtag as it doesn't belong to her.

007Stocko · 04/04/2022 20:22

She went out for a walk and the tag stayed in the flat. Her handbag appears to be a suspect so surely the next thing to have done was go for another walk but with the handbag to confirm it.

If she took her phone with her on the walk but the tag still showed in the flat how can it be a glitch?!?!

I'd want to know it was a glitch before I did that becuse it would mean if she actually is tagged without her consent, she won't know any more.
Mummapenguin20 · 04/04/2022 20:25

Hope its a glitch

Benjispruce4 · 04/04/2022 20:29

What is an apple tag?

BaileysBreakfast · 04/04/2022 20:45

Could it be a scam? How did she receive the notification and can you verify that it was from Apple?

Mellowyellow222 · 04/04/2022 20:50

@Benjispruce4

CompassPoint · 04/04/2022 20:58

Bytrgrewd · 04/04/2022 21:29

All these stories are a bit worrying. Glad your dd is safe and fingers crossed it is just a glitch.

Benjispruce4 · 04/04/2022 21:29

Hope she is okay...and you. And that it's just a glitch... otherwise it feels very sinister
LondonQueen · 04/04/2022 21:41

I get this notification when I'm in a car with DH, likewise for him. We both have them on our keys.

Fayelina · 04/04/2022 21:43

What a worry for you and your DD OP. Hope Apple get to the bottom of this and you find out soon.

Mamarama2u2 · 04/04/2022 21:44

I am fully invested in this now! Please let us know the outcome! Horrifying if it isn’t a glitch!

zombie0037 · 04/04/2022 21:58

Could it be tracking on her phone, my Samsung s21, tracks my movement.
