Safe Guarding Teacher called with stories

Hi. So I’m asking on behalf of my sister.
my sister said the safe guarding head or teacher called her today to say that her daughter 4YO told her at school that the blister on her hand was due to her trying to retrieve her football that fell in the fire. My sister told the safeguarding teacher that the blister randomly appears every few months on both children’s arms. (Both kids have been having this fluid filled blister every couple months randomly , started when they moved to England) They’ve been to the GP who prescribed antibiotics and said they have no idea why and it might be some sort of reaction.
Now when her daughter came home she tried to find out what ball she was speaking about and her daughter said she told the teacher she slept and when she woke up the blister was there, no mention of any balls. Sister is upset and thinks the teacher made the story up.
do you think she should take it further I.e tell the class teacher or email saying her daughter said she never said anything of the sort or just let it go. It’s a 4YO word against an adult but she’s adamant her daughter doesn’t tell tales.
what do you all think . Thank you

You says they’ve just moved to England? Do they have strong accents which might have got in the way of the teacher understanding hat she said?

I’d say unlikely. They’ve actually got a good English accent going in the year and they’ve been there and little traces of any Americanism.

It is amazing how many parents have children that will absolutely, never ever, definitely, not lie or make things up.

Op - anyone investigating potential abuse is not an idiot, it's their job.

OP, would you prefer a return to the "olden days" when teachers only believed disclosures of possible abuse when they came from poor / working class families? When children were in fact rarely believed, and teachers weren't even given any training in sporting did of potential abuse?

The Safeguarding Lead is just doing her job. She and any other professionals who might get involved are well aware that 4 year olds often embroider their stories. But they will also be aware that more children are suffering violence at home than any of us like to think, and they have to investigate each and every potential clue.

My 4 year old told his teacher he had rum for breakfast every day.

He didn't.

4 year olds have a very bad grasp of the difference between fact and fiction.

Very unlikely the teacher made this up.

I agree with you . Rum though 😂 , their imaginations are wild. I told her it’s unlikely but I guess first time of hearing a wild tale got her wondering. She doesn’t even have a football . I’ve heard a few tales but mostly exaggerations not very different stories.

Any parent who is adamant their child doesn't lie... especially a 4 year old....is setting themselves up for trouble.

I called her idiot not because she was investigating abuse but because she said outrightly that abuse was taking place. You’re not worried about such outright conclusion from a person meant to be impartial ? or maybe they are not meant to be impartial and just reach a conclusion immediately. I have zero problems with a SL, or anyone doing their job correctly why would I?

My ds told his teacher I ran an old lady over and laughed at her and that I locked him and his brother in the cupboard under the stairs.
It's fairly typical 4 year-old behaviour.
Your response to harvest moon was unreasonable and disproportionate.
Give your head a wobble.

Oh dear, sounds like your sister needs to give her head a little shake and maybe tell her to read about the number of children harmed by their parents which schools could have or should have picked up on.

wriggleigglepiggle · 07/01/2025 18:27

Op she didn't say that, she said that her job is investigating it, as is mine. As a DSL you see it all and you investigate it all. Unless you'd prefer us to ignore everything ?

wriggleigglepiggle · 07/01/2025 18:29

@Harvestmoon49 is spot on with her answers.

I never said her daughter was 100% correct or whatever , all I asked was she wanted to know if she should ask the teacher about it at drop off tomorrow. My response to the other poster was not unreasonable. It was exactly what she needed to hear. She read the post like everyone and came to a conclusion that nah , abuse is happening to n the house. From a single post! Then tried to justify it by saying in her position as a SL she sees a lot of abuse etc. I’m sure she does, it’s a safe guarding position. Does that mean that every kid she saw with an injury, wound etc was abused . She concluded straight off the bat that abuse is going on. If it doesn’t make you mad no worries. It made me mad and I called her an idiot. Actually she called me an idiot first, I just responded in like because I have a lot of time in my hands for the next 28 minutes. Thank you for your comment though.

Maybe not abuse, but it's not normal is it? Blisters appearing at the same time?

As others have said, why would a busy teacher add to their workload by making up a story?

Should she not ever report anything out the ordinary in case the parents sister gets upset? Give your head a wobble and let professionals do their job.

Birdscratch · 07/01/2025 18:40

Harvestmoon49 · 07/01/2025 18:02

Unbelievable.
You are so very very wrong.

I'm a designated safeguarding lead (the usual term fyi - not a safeguarding teacher) in a primary school.
I spend a huge part of my working week ringing parents about unexplained bruises & injuries. I also have to discuss disclosures of abuse and more commonly children sharing they've witnessed domestic violence at home.
My job isn't easy and idiots like you don't exactly make it more pleasant!

I have neither the time or inclination to 'make up' stories and barely have enough hours in the day to follow up all the referrals I receive from staff.

Thank you for the work you do.

crumblingschools · 07/01/2025 18:41

@BlazenWeights I don’t think that poster who is DSL did say the children were being abused, they just said no way would SL have time to make something up like this and that abusive parents act in ways you wouldn’t believe, didn’t say it was obviously abuse. Another poster said they thought it was abuse.

Lord no! The good old days were not as good as people like to believe.

Find this fascinating, why is everyone so sure no teacher would lie ever?

My family are all teachers as are a couple of friends. They are just people!!

There are good and bad and weird and wonderful people in every group and teachers are no different!
Also know a lot of social workers and can think of one who I wouldn’t trust at all.

Saying categorically that no teacher would make anything up is actually dangerous, belongs in same box as -

Nurses never harm babies.
Presidents never grab pussies.
Doctors never purposely kill patients.
Grooming gangs don’t exist.
Governments don’t hold parties during imposed lockdown.

Before anyone suggests I have any motive for questioning this belief, please be assured I have never had a teacher lie about/ to me.

OP, it is highly doubtful the teacher made it up, more likely miscommunication.
I would email the teacher and calmly ask for clarification and also advise the children have seen doctors on this issue.

On another note, I have blisters that appear every few months on toes and fingers.
Doctors haven’t got a clue, just one of those things!

Wow. You're absolutely vile aren't you. An actual safeguarding lead points out the reality of her role and therefore the low chance of a teacher just making stuff up.

Two young kids with blisters and a teacher asked questions, got a strange response from a child and followed protocols and raised it as something that needed to be looked at closer to ensure child is safe?

But no. You know better than everyone don't you?

Wow.

BlazenWeights · 07/01/2025 18:46

@Harvestmoon49 my apologies. I attributed the wrong quote to you. My bad you never said it was abuse just of that. That was another clown. That being said you called me an idiot so we are even. 😃
