If she is withholding poo then she definitely needs Movicol to soften it. Try joining the Facebook group Movicol Mummies and look at the ERIC website. Will have loads of advice, GPs are generally useless with this problem as it’s not widely understood. Hope your little girl is more comfortable soon.

The diarrhea is overflow seeping around the blockage it's going to take long term stool softeners

Is it a psychological thing ? My DS was like this. I used to sit him on the toilet and sit in front of him and read him a book so that he would relax enough to have a poo. It took a while but worked in the end

lawMB · 04/06/2023 20:19

No it won't dissolve the hard poo.
Movicol is very good.

lawMB · 04/06/2023 20:37

thank.you will start with that in the morning in anyone's experience will.this just force her poo as she is litterly clamping her legs and bum closed

You need a 3 day regimen of clearing the blockage with a laxative, then a 7 day regimen of loosening the remaining poop with high dose Movicol to get it all out. Afterwards a maintenance program of Movicol to keep it in check.

My daughter had this and still does if not watched. It's unbelievable how the diarrhea was just poop seeping around a blockage and so I didn't recognize she had chronic constipation, the blockage was so big it changed her colon and her poops were absolutely ginormous.

Talk to your doctor about this and get a prescription. It's serious and needs attention.

Also get a step stool for their feet so when they are sitting on the toilet their knees are higher than their bum

Wishiwasatailor · 04/06/2023 20:50

Movicol and laxido are the same thing different brands

lawMB · 04/06/2023 21:07

My ds 4.5 was recently prescribed movicol. He was perfectly potty trained for about 8 months and then suddenly started withholding poop. He possibly has arfid so has a high milk-based diet so hasn't been hugely successful in holding for more than a few days, luckily for us I guess. It's been about 3 weeks on the movicol now and he's no longer holding on and going in his pants, which is great for us all. We'll continue the movicol (1 sachet a day) for a while yet given his poor diet, but I don't know how long for yet, not gotten that far with my plans!

We also tried the reading/tablet on the toilet, blowing bubbles and windmills. Apparently makes it harder to hold on.

lawMB · 04/06/2023 21:38

i hope.he feels his best soon its so horrid.to watch my daughter isnt potty trained yet ive tryed leavung her pants of as she will wee.in potty and sit on.it but she becomes hysterical for her pants but then witholds i try to explain and comfort but she becomes so.angry and tells me to.go away

Sit her n the potty with a nappy on and do the windmill bubble blowing as suggested above.
is she on the disimpaction regime of movicol/laxido?

My 3 year old is exactly the same, crosses her legs, gets angry etc. She’s been on movicol since she was 11 months old and as long as I give her a maintenance dose, she’s fine. I’ve tried weaning her off it a few times but it always comes back with a vengeance so have to give a higher dose to clear her out then back to maintenance dose (1 sachet a day does her).

lawMB · 04/06/2023 22:29

thank you.for your reply when she clears out is it solid and does she stop.withholding i cam see her asleep in bed withholding while shes asleep its breaking my heart

Hi my little grandson has had a problem with constipation he is also potentially on the autistic spectrum awaiting diagnosis.
You must must must have the movicol/laxido. It needs to be given until the child is literally pooing clear water. This will ensure any blockage has gone.
If your little one is getting sore use a good barrier cream even sudocrem. Metanium is very good as a treatment also. Your GP may prescribe it for you.
The Poo Ladies are excellent you can look them up. They will explain everything step by step.
Hope your little one improves soon. I understand how distressing it is.

Bomatoes · 05/06/2023 20:42

Hi OP, had the same issue with my DD. Would the GP prescribe a glycerin suppository?

We had to ask our GP for it after trying the sachets for nearly 2 weeks (!!) to no avail. Obviously a suppository isn't the most comfortable, especially as she's so sore 😢

We used Vaseline to protect the skin against further irritation and a bit of water on the suppository helped ease it in (worked within 20 mins).

Really hope she gets some relief soon, I remember the stress of it all and wondering how I got to a point in my life where I was praying for poo 🙃

lawMB · 05/06/2023 20:56

Yep almost clear water poo off the back of movicol is the only way to really clear the blockage and start from scratch I’m afraid. Also a suppository may be needed to reach that point. Good luck

We had this for years, DS2 was only free of it at age 9 when we got a referral to a brilliant specialist. Try Pico Liquid, it’s like liquid dynamite and will shift anything. With DS it started because he’d been unwell and hadn’t been for a few days when he was 2, when he did it hurt so the spiral started. Once it was easy he was fine. Movicol just didn’t work quick enough.
