Julia Donaldson books

Ds is very into Julia Donaldson's books and he seems to have his favourite on rotation. There are some I flipping hate reading over and over - some or just too repetitive but he seems to love those! The Smartest Giant is not one I enjoy... I do like Monkey Puzzle though. What are your favourites/least favourites?

Stick man is a firm favourite. For slightly lesser known, Sharing a Shell is lovely.

MumstedInadequate · 25/07/2022 19:49

Oh Snail and the Whale is cute too

Brendabigbaps · 25/07/2022 19:49

flum flum tree is amazing read by David Tennant!

Tabby McTat is mine and also The Paper Dolls.
Stick Man drives me insane.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/07/2022 19:51

My all time favourite was Paper Dolls.

I liked the Gruffalo and Grufflos child, what the ladybird heard, and Follow the Swallow

shedwithivy · 25/07/2022 19:52

The second ladybird heard is disappointing

Saucery · 25/07/2022 19:52

Room On The Broom is my favourite. Lots of opportunity for act-ting with the voices Grin

I wasn’t a fan of Stick Man until I read about the author’s son in Fierce Bad Rabbits by Clare Pollard. Sad

kindlyensure · 25/07/2022 19:54

Ah, we are v fond of the Selfish Giant. Also like A Squash and a Squeeze and obvs the Gruffalo.

Don't like Paper Dolls at all. Its too whimsical and so lazy to have the boy spoiling the girl's fun. Also, why would you draw a paper doll with 2 noses? Or a monobrow? Just seems a bit twee. Yeah, that one is weak.

Angharad78 · 25/07/2022 19:55

left field suggestion: Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose. Easy to do the voices for and short!

BiscuitLover3678 · 25/07/2022 19:55

I love them all! One of the only authors where I can read everything.

I particularly like the ladybird ones:
What the ladybird heard, what the ladybird heard next, what the ladybird heard on holiday, what the ladybird heard at the zoo

tabby mctat
Gruffalo and gruffalos child
singing mermaid
princess wizard
stickman

DS loves them all but finds superworm more boring. Actually I lie I don’t like the rhyming rabbit as there are a LOT of words and songs. He gets bored.

struggleisreal · 25/07/2022 19:55

Paper Dolls! Find it hard to read without sobbing. We’re also big fans of the Snail and the Whale and the Smeds and Smoos

@Saucery - what's the story behind stick man??

Hercisback · 25/07/2022 19:58

Tiddler is the best, I never tire of reading that one.
Quite like Highway Rat, Smeds and Smoos and Charlie Cook.

The Ugly Five is a bit meh.

TheSoundOfMucus · 25/07/2022 19:59

Love Tabby McTat and Room on the Broom.

Can’t bear the Highway Rat and the Smartest Giant.

Schooldil3ma · 25/07/2022 20:00

DC adore them all.
I threw Paper Dolls behind the wardrobe never to be found. My Nan died a while ago and I can't read it without floods of tears. I'm actually welling up typing this 😥

Shoemadlady · 25/07/2022 20:01

Squash and a squeeze is our favourite x

Dreamstosell · 25/07/2022 20:02

Room on the broom, Gruffalo and Gruffalo’s child were the favourites here. However I find that, sadly, children in their late teens no longer want me to read these favourites to them 😂

@Albgo she has written her own tribute to him but Clare Pollard draws her own sensitive parallels between mental illness and the constant flight of Stick Man.

AnneElliott · 25/07/2022 20:03

Room on the broom. DS still chuckles now about the 'Buzz off that's my witch' and he's 16!

MamaWingsIt · 25/07/2022 20:05

Our favourites are

A squash and a squeeze
Tiddler
Stick-man (sooo boring though as this is on repeat in our house)
The snail and the whale

UsernameFail · 25/07/2022 20:05

Fans here.

We also love The Cook and the King and the Go Away Bird

MamaWingsIt · 25/07/2022 20:05

lickenchugget · 25/07/2022 19:40

Tiddler was always the favourite in our house

Tiddler?! Tiddler?! TIDDLER’S LATE!!!

Ha!! If we're ever running behind for anything, our DS shouts "ahhh we're late like Tiddler!!!" 🤣🤣

user1474315215 · 25/07/2022 20:14

Love Tiddler and A Squash and a Squeeze. Loathe Zog.

Century123 · 25/07/2022 20:14

Paper dolls (cried first time I read it) not sad cry just beautiful book.
Zog and the flying doctors and room on the broom🤗

DeathMetalMum · 25/07/2022 20:17

Tabby McTat or Paper Dolls, paper dolls always made me cry.

Followed by Rosies hat and Tiddler. I liked Rosies hat as it didn't seem as long as some of the others.
