When do children no longer need vests?

My dd is 3 and still wears vests, however she's outgrown most of them now and I'm wondering whether I need to buy anymore. Is there an age when children stop needing to wear vests?

@iamapixie you are not alone I remember my friend telling me she had to hide them for her 12/13 year old because she wanted to keep wearing them!

With my very slim DD that felt the cold I managed to get her some with super thin adjustable straps so they didn't looking "babyish" under he school blouses at secondary school sometimes she just wore tight T-shirts when it was really cold for school.

Northernsoullover · 13/06/2020 21:47

Mine wore them in the winter until they were around 7. Especially under school polo shirts. They looked so cute in them! After that age they stray into Onslow territory Grin

Mine are 6 and 8 and really appreciate a vest under school uniform on cold days. They’re both prone to getting hot in a jumper but then just a t-shirt really isn’t enough against a draft so vest and t-shirt seems to work out perfectly for them. And DS likes to lounge around the house in vest and pants on an “inside day” (which is every day right now). They’re so cheap and last for ages, they’re just a useful thing to have in a wardrobe.

I've got one who takes off jumpers and cardigans as soon as possible, so I put vests on her.

Spied · 13/06/2020 21:54

DS stopped putting his vests on under his t shirts when he was 8/9.
DD progressed to a crop top at 8.
Both worry them daily ( except in summer) until then when they deemed them uncool.

Wore

homemadecommunistrussia · 13/06/2020 22:01

Vests are to keep you warm or for under see through clothes. So everyone in our house has some vests and we wear them when we feel the need.

They're not something you grow out of wearing.Confused

Yubaba · 13/06/2020 22:09

Mine have worn them off and on over the years, they stopped when they were potty trained and then I bought some a couple of years ago when we had that really cold winter but it’s not something that’s on my radar so didn’t bother to buy them again.

sylbunny · 13/06/2020 22:14

I still wear vests! They keep me warm in the winter and help with tummy jiggle!

I thought they were just for warmth? My toddler wears them in the winter under a dress or a t shirt if I think she needs an extra layer. Same as I do.

NeedToKnow101 · 13/06/2020 22:16

My DS 16 still wears vests in the winter! Grin He doesn't like the school jumper so he wears a vest under his shirt.
He always used to get a cold if he went out without a vest on.

SisyphusDad · 13/06/2020 22:17

Have had sole responsibly since DS2 was 5 (nearly 10 years ago). Never used them. Both DSs are still alive and healthy.

unicornparty · 13/06/2020 22:21

My ds has never worn a vest

Hagisonthehill · 13/06/2020 22:43

Vests are for everyone.
DD wore the children's style ones until she moved onto crop tops and then secret support vests. She liked the thin straps and has worn an assortment of these eversince in cold weather and with pants in bed.
I still wear them in winter.

Woodentopper · 14/06/2020 14:09

My 3.5 yo still isn't dry and still in nappies, I regularly use popper vests on him.

Dipsandcrisps · 14/06/2020 14:52

I have vest for DD whose 8 and my 10 year old DD has started developing so she alternates between vests and crop tops depending on what she’s wearing.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 14/06/2020 21:44

Oh wow, now I feel like a neglectful mother, mine has never worn vests! I think we ditched the baby popper vests around 15 months as I hate poppers for changing nappies, so as soon as spring hit, I ditched them. It never occurred to me to buy normal vests, he just wears tops and jumpers.

tiredanddangerous · 14/06/2020 21:49

I’ve never bought either of my dc a vest Shock

Sittinonthefloor · 14/06/2020 21:51

Vests are for when it’s cold, it’s a temperature thing not an age thing!

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 14/06/2020 21:55

Mine all wear them under school uniform shirt in winter. They all love them, even 16 year old DS1. They wear the M&S thermal ones, so soft!

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 14/06/2020 21:56

Should say they only wear the T shirt style from age 3-4, not the popper ones or what they call the grandpa sleeveless style.

Naughty1205 · 14/06/2020 22:03

9yo dd and 4yo ds both wear vests all year round! Either light cotton or thermal, season depending!

LuluJakey1 · 14/06/2020 22:03

Up here in the north-east we wear a liberty bodice until we are married Grin for decency sake and all the time, whatever age you are, from 1st September to 31st May because it's so cold.

Rigorousyetcalm · 14/06/2020 22:10

My 11yr old DS wears a sleeveless one but not in bed or in summer. He’s always worn one. I was wondering if older boys wore them as he’ll be heading to senior school in September.

trevthecat · 14/06/2020 22:18

My eldest is 10 and he still likes a vest in winter! But my youngest is 2.5 and is a sweaty thing and doesn't have one now

NeedToKnow101 · 14/06/2020 23:10

@jokolo - 'I always wear a vest. I didn't know it was a developmental milestone! '
