Can we start a mnet movement to ban party bags?

Back in the dark ages, when I was a girl, we sometimes got an extra piece of birthday cake in a paper napkin to take home.

When did this 'party bag' nonsense start? From what I can see most of it is (expensive) junk and, what offends me more, is that the guests look for it.

Am I an old skinflint/curmudgeon? No honest answers required.

FGS, most parents have already forked-out for the food and the makeover/clown/entertainer/ unicycling jugglers, as it is. Isn't that enough?

pmsl!! and at 'deferred success'

beam me up Scotty

gooseegg · 29/08/2006 21:47

Give them all a pineapple each - they will love it.

bubble99 · 29/08/2006 21:48

Sad but true, Jools.

Nobody is allowed to be 'average' in Blair's Britain.

What's wrong with 'average?'

nothing - I'm wonderful

really - words fail me - its so, so sad! I can't even get angry anymore

TinyGang · 29/08/2006 21:53

Sorry..party bags must stay. Full of sweeties and plastic junk. My children love them.

Maybe there should be a sensible party bag? A useful one? A few organic vegetables and a Womans Own knitting pattern, perhaps.

Mind you I used to buy Lucky Bags when I was small. It's not what you get, it's the anticipation.

bubble99 · 29/08/2006 21:54

But, TinyGang. Isn't the anticipation wrong? Isn't the party enough?

Exactly Malory. If it doesn't contain Prada you/I will be mocked by a bunch of 6 year olds, these days.

Nah..I'm with Cod. I like them.

TinyGang. What? You like picking up bits of discarded plastic from the floor? Really?

If your children have a 'no tat' diet during the rest of the year, then I can see that they may treasure these items, I suppose.

southeastastra · 29/08/2006 22:03

wow, a pineapple would be great

ocd · 29/08/2006 22:04

TinyGang · 29/08/2006 22:04

No, we have our fair share of accumulated crap it's true. I don't like picking up bits of plastic crap especially.

But childrens parties aren't about what we like cos they're not for us. I don't do party bags for my friends if they come round. Although come to think of it...

Dd would love that mt. All those worthy party bags with seeds etc always make me smile though - that's where the competitive edge comes in imo. What's a bit of disposable plastic shite now and again.

ocd · 29/08/2006 22:06

bubble99 · 29/08/2006 22:09

Are you sitting/in session tomorrow, cod?

I pity any poor sod who turns up with a section 1 for haribou.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 29/08/2006 22:13

agree with ocd and others
that you are miserable skinflints

so what if it a bit of plastic shite, cake and sweets
worth it to see a smile on a kids face

MarsLady · 29/08/2006 22:14

and yet the smile on my face is so much more satisfying! lol

Nighty nite codliver!

bubble99 · 29/08/2006 22:17

But, scousey, there is no smile on my face after they've lost interest in the bag of tat after....ooooh?.....30 seconds?

And it devalues any tat that I might wish to buy them in the future.

ghosty · 29/08/2006 22:17

Methinks the codster is a wee bit pissed off!!!
