Can we start a mnet movement to ban party bags?

Back in the dark ages, when I was a girl, we sometimes got an extra piece of birthday cake in a paper napkin to take home.

When did this 'party bag' nonsense start? From what I can see most of it is (expensive) junk and, what offends me more, is that the guests look for it.

Am I an old skinflint/curmudgeon? No honest answers required.

FGS, most parents have already forked-out for the food and the makeover/clown/entertainer/ unicycling jugglers, as it is. Isn't that enough?

had dd's party today. was surprised that 3yos were asking for party bags, i thought they wouldn't have caught on yet. they did all say thank you very nicely though.

At my chid's first birthday I did party bags for the Mums for "congrats on surviving parenthood this far." They had bubble bath and Baileys in them ;-) I was quite popular for that !

I cannot believe this thread is still going.

Just had her 5th birthday yesterday. Not only were they saying "Where's the party bag?" but prior to opening the pass the parcel, they were going "I wonder what present is in each layer".
I guess it's just what they are used to. Not their fault at all.
I must say though, I do like doing party bags but upmarket ones - no sweets, just Charlie and Lola stickers, a light-up heart stamper, a whoopee cushion and a fridge magnet with their photo on (which we took at the start of the party and hubby printed during). The stickers and magnets came from Ebay and the rest were pence as well.

JanH, it's providing a little stability in my life; don't knock it. I want it still going a year from now when I can report on the party bags for my dd's next birthday, filled with dessicated frogs, worms and fluffy furballs.

THanks Ulysses! It's a LONG thread but I've made it to the end now. Lots of good ideas. It's always interesting to hear how other people go about these things.

Re Ban the bag. Am already sweating about sons third birthday party. Having spoken to friends whose older children comment on partybags, i am going back to the 70,s and all i am giving is a piece of homemade birthday cake.
