I'm fascinated by what people choose to name their children (proper names rather than nicknames I mean) -has anyone chosen a name that they now regret or have 'gone off', or named their child from a tv program or celebrity etc... ?

Used to deal with Elaine Crapper at work.

Demented · 15/10/2002 13:56

These are great! DH deals with a man called Dick Harden!

SoupDragon · 15/10/2002 14:12

I used to work with an A. Chicken. Mind you, as my maiden name rhymed, I really not in a great position to be commenting on this.

grommit · 15/10/2002 15:05

I once knew an A. Hankie and a colleage called R. Dickhoff (must be a transexual) :-)

bundle · 15/10/2002 15:07

I knew a Mike Hunt through work (just say it out loud)

SoupDragon · 15/10/2002 15:21

Ooh - you've just reminded me about a P Nurse I worked with!

janh · 15/10/2002 17:53

bundle, someone I know has mentioned a Mike Hunt - only she says he always used to refer to himself very pointedly as Michael - this one used to work in publicity for a theatre in the NW, could it be the same one?

(And what on earth were all these poor peoples' parents thinking of????)

janh · 15/10/2002 17:54

And, Soupdragon, talking of rhymes, round here there are a Trish Fish, June Moon and Cath McGrath.

bundle · 15/10/2002 18:08

janh - this one was a freelance journalist in the Dorset/Hants area, I think. never mentioned he wanted to be called Michael

Just found this thread (been on hols)
Suedonim, your kids must have gone to the same school as me??? He was chemistry teacher at Perth Academy, no?

SueDonim · 17/10/2002 03:03

Yes, my boys went to Perth Academy, Susan, between '87 and '96. Was it chemistry Mr C taught - my mind is a complete blank about it!

susanmt · 17/10/2002 10:21

SueDonim - I am sure we have had this conversation before somewhere! I left in '88 so probably didn't know them, but some of your boys must have known, even been in the same class as, my younger brothers. Weird, eh?
Yes, he was the head of the Chemistry department, and I understand he has now retired.

Azzie · 17/10/2002 10:34

I've just come across a medical research paper written by a Dr Superdock.

eidsvold · 21/01/2003 18:47

I too went to school with a Richard Head and that man - brave soul went on to be a high school teacher. I taught in a school with a Pearl and Sydney Harbour ( sisters). As to others stealing names - my ex husband who is now married to my best fried ( yeh go figure) called their daughter - the name we had decided on calling our first.

grommit · 21/01/2003 19:19

There is a woman who works at my company called Rhonda Dickoff!

hmb · 21/01/2003 19:41

There is a scientist who works on primate behaviour call Dick Burns.

Caroline5 · 21/01/2003 21:20

Someone who appears in the credits of Star Trek Voyager (yes, I'm really sad) - Al Smutko!

soyabean · 21/01/2003 21:28

My kids had hysterics on seeing the busiuness card of a Chinese guy who worked with dh: Won Way Poo. Mind you when I was pregnant with each of them we had a fun time thinking of silly Chinese names for them too. Dh is Chinese, first bit of given name needed to be Ty, so we had Ty ping, Ty Ming, Ty Ling etc.Kept us amused anyway.(I mean names that would sound silly in English: all lovely in Chinese!).

bells2 · 22/01/2003 11:25

My favourite Chinese businessman I have met is Aw Fook Yu. I have also been to visit Penas Corporation in Malaysia and Hung Poo in Taiwan. There was a spokesman for a Korean company called Lik Yu Bum once too. Also used to work with a Fanny Pong. Chortle chortle

WideWebWitch · 22/01/2003 12:00

Bells2, snigger snigger!

Marina · 22/01/2003 12:15

Oh, behave, you two

PamT · 22/01/2003 12:22

We had unfortunate dealings with an insurance loss assessor called Peter Staines. When we had to settle for less than we had hoped I took great pleasure in showing everyone the envelope I had addressed to Mr P Staines!

DH used to work with a Brian O'Brien - what were his parents thinking of?

CAM · 22/01/2003 13:16

My sister used to have a boyfriend called A. Hole

THe first three letters of my surname are Tit ! This causes a few problems (I am a teacher when not a sahm) and have had problems signing in to some web services (not mumsnet!) as I have an 'obscene' name! Not my fault I married a (half) German Irishman!
