I'm fascinated by what people choose to name their children (proper names rather than nicknames I mean) -has anyone chosen a name that they now regret or have 'gone off', or named their child from a tv program or celebrity etc... ?

My dh's best friend had a sales rep come in to his office and introduce himself as "Scratcher, Dick Scratcher". This is no lie - I've seen his card. You'd think he use Richard wouldn't you?

SoupDragon · 11/10/2002 08:37

The company I worked for used to have an accountant called Ian Crook.

Tissy · 11/10/2002 09:02

I have a Jonas, as we wanted Jo(e) but not Joseph (nothing against it, just a lot of them). People often think it's Jonah though. When i was pregnant we had a boy's name all sorted out, middle names & everything. Couldn't for the life of us think of a girl's name. So it was a good job it was a boy!

Tortington · 11/10/2002 13:34

i think boys names are sooo easy i have a few lined up that i willnever ever use - i love and adore the name ezekiel ( cant spell it tho!)then zacchary, caleb, when i was expecting the twins i new for ages i was having 1 boy and picked jacob and everyone including dh thought it was a puffy name! but i just fell in love with it, it was girls names we couldnt decide on, i love Hope, grace, april, but we had to comprimise cos he liked names like leanne? and corinne.. we had a n emma!

emmabee · 11/10/2002 16:02

Men have really weird ideas about names. When it's for a boy they get incredibly paranoid about teasing (do boys tease more than girls about names?). I wanted Gabriel as a first name, but it was relegated to middle at the request of dh. I won't tell you what ghastly girls' names he suggested, for fear of offending anyone with that name, but I was recoiling in horror, I can tell you!

Rhiannon · 11/10/2002 19:33

My DH used to work with Oliver Cromwell.

Lucy123 · 11/10/2002 20:26

There used to be a reporter on telly in Brighton (can't remember if it was Carlton or BBC south today) called Chris Peacock. He mysteriously started using the name Christopher after a while.

Dp was dead set on the name "Yoda" for a boy or a girl - until we discovered that it is a bit similar to the Spanish f-word. lucky escape...

Tortington · 11/10/2002 20:44

yoda would have been soo cool tho!

Chinchilla · 11/10/2002 20:49

I used to deal at work with an Ian Feltham (I felt 'em!)

I used to go to school with a 'Septimus'. Dh and I wanted to call ds 'Sebastian', but thought that he would get beaten up at school! We had 'Claudia Hope' lined up for a girl, but couldn't agree on a boy's name. I was really into 'Fred', with Frederick on the birth certificate, but dh was worried that he would get called 'Freddy Kruger'. I still like it though.

I'm really peed off though, because the name we chose for ds (Max, Maximilian in full) seemed so original and unused when we chose it. Since then, it seems like the world and his wife knows a child of that name, and it is now really common! Perhaps we should have looked into it more, but it wasn't on the top ten list of boys' names.

SueDonim · 12/10/2002 07:13

My boys had a teacher called Mr Conquest. His parents had deliberately named him Norman and his dog is called Hastings!

GillW · 12/10/2002 17:52

The church where my parents live used to have a Canon Ball.

jasper · 13/10/2002 00:15

Suedonnim, I can confirm that story.A Norman Conquest taught at our school in the early 70s.

SueDonim · 13/10/2002 14:43

Hehehe, Jasper - must be the same one, surely! I can't recall his subject now - history maybe?? The dog must be a later model, though!

batey · 13/10/2002 17:00

Went to school with a Denzil Pilchard. Often wondered who became Mrs Pilchard.........?

jasper · 13/10/2002 22:51

Joe1 · 14/10/2002 00:12
