True but how many cows have you seen that fly? Probably the same amount as apples...

almostanangel · 03/05/2005 16:13

ah but at least cows try to take off,,,ive seen them running,,,all beit slowly..apples just fall down!

I had always thought it was that air pressure thing, but apparently they've now decided that wings just push air down, and that pushes the plane up, if you see what I mean.

SoupDragon · 03/05/2005 16:37

Get a sheet of paper. Put it up against your lips and blow hard just across the top surface. The paper should lift up. The same theory (only bigger!) makes planes fly. All to do with air speeds/presure giving lift as has already been said.

almostanangel · 03/05/2005 16:40

ooh soupdragon i did it thats fasinating ,,dhs are looking at me funny tho!

flamesparrow · 03/05/2005 16:42

I remember Lee Evans saying that it is because everyone sat in it wills the plane up when they all sit there thinking "please take off, please take off"

SoupDragon · 03/05/2005 16:42

hehehehe I wondered if you would be able to resist trying it. It is good as it visually demonstrates that the theory does work.

SoupDragon · 03/05/2005 16:43

Hang on "dhs are looking at me funny"?? How many DHs do you have??

almostanangel · 03/05/2005 16:43

nah!! i just like the noise!!

HappyDaddy · 03/05/2005 17:41

almostanangel, depends how fast an apple rolls. some of them can't half shift...

SoupDragon · 03/05/2005 17:42

You're not blowing on paper, you're having a physics lesson and broadening your mind. Or something like that.

Tortington · 03/05/2005 18:45

so what about the big ship then, with the big plane and those big big handsom soldiers?

i was thinking its prolly to do with the sea being really big and the ship being really small.
so whats the real answer?

Twiglett · 03/05/2005 18:51

it's magic

JoolsToo · 03/05/2005 18:54

it's the wind beneath their wings (fwiw - I'm always very glad when they hit terra firma again )

SoupDragon · 03/05/2005 18:56

A steel boat is very heavy. When it
floats, it pushes some of the water aside. The water around the boat pushes back because
of the air in the atmosphere pushing down on it. It?s like stretching a balloon over a tin
and trying to poke your finger through. You can?t, because it is being squashed by the air
above it. Because it is hollow, the metal hull of a boat weighs less than a solid amount of
metal the same size. Both push aside the same amount of water, but the force of the
water pushing up can support the force of the hollow boat pushing down.

The weight of the plane(s) is still insufficient to make the boat sink but there would be a maximum number of planes the aircraft carrier could take before it sank.

And the combined testosterone of all those good looking soldiers probably helps keep it afloat.

happymerryberries · 03/05/2005 18:59

Don't call them soldiers though....or they might push you overboard and make you sink! They would be sailors on a ship!

SoupDragon · 03/05/2005 19:00

Not necessarily, surely. Some of them would be pilots

happymerryberries · 03/05/2005 19:02

Dear god! Don't call them soldiers! They are Air Crew!!!!!! Dh is most insistant!!!

Tortington · 03/05/2005 19:03

i think i get it soupy, its cos the sea is really big isn't it?
