I have such a silly self esteem I even feel insignificant on here!

ALthough what is it... 20,000 MNers? No wonder

mrspink27 · 21/02/2005 21:02

i met my dh in an on line chatroom! and no one knows that.. not even his family or mine or any of our friends!
that was cathartic!

ThomCat · 21/02/2005 21:09

There are such interesting things on here.
Would love to know more about the quicksand incident.

wobblyknicks · 21/02/2005 21:25

Nothing too interesting TC, was on a Cornish beach, rest of beach was absolutely fine but somehow there was this tiny little pool of quicksand and muggins managed to step right into it. Got up to about thigh level when a bloke came running over and pulled me out. Was only about 9 at the time and was cacking it. Lost my wellies too!!!

cornfield · 21/02/2005 21:33

most of my positions have been dominated by men.

emmatmg · 21/02/2005 21:38

quicksand on a cornish beach!!!!

Corrr, i thought it was stuff of myth and legend.

What makes it quicksand.......

Gwenick · 21/02/2005 21:39

ooo there's a beach on the south coast of cornwall - not 'too' far from Landsend that's got quicksand (If I remember correctly from our holiday there 2 1/2yrs ago LOL)

galaxy · 21/02/2005 21:41

Wk. That reminds me of a holiday in Truro when I was about six. My 3 year old brother decided to throw the tea towels down onto the estuary from the cottage garden that we were renting. Mum went down to get them and ended up sinking up to her waist in quicksand.

2 days later same brother managed to wack her in the eye with a club playing crazy golf and she spent the week with with a black eye

wobblyknicks · 21/02/2005 21:42

emmatmg - its something to do with sand getting saturated with water so that there's no more friction and it can't support any weight. And it's supposed to work that if you don't move you don't sink but definitely not true IME - you sink slower but you still sink!!!

wobblyknicks · 21/02/2005 21:43

Oh no galaxy!! Sounds like a fun holiday!!!

snafu · 21/02/2005 21:45

Sinking in quicksand used to be my absolute biggest fear when I was little.

MistressMary · 21/02/2005 21:46

I do a lot of bumping!

wobblyknicks · 21/02/2005 21:48

snafu - its yuck, you want to move but you know you can't

emmatmg · 21/02/2005 21:53

freaky....so how far could you sink.....how far would it be saturated with no friction.......will it just go on and on and on, deeper and deeper and deeper?

Freaks me right out.....Can't get my head around that at all.

I have the same trouble with how jumbo jets stay in the air.....DH and everybody have explained it a million times but it just blows my mind........it's f*cking 10000's on tonnes FGS why does it fly!??!?!?!?!

wobblyknicks · 21/02/2005 21:55

emma - it just depends how deep it is - like a pond. if it's shallower than you then you can't sink, if it's deeper than you can.

Don't understand jumbo jets either and the science-y bit doesn't help - after all some science-y people proved scientifically that bumblebees can't fly, but no-one's told them yet obviously!!!

snafu · 21/02/2005 21:56

No, don't, honestly, it makes me go all funny just thinking about quicksand.

I'm sure someone used to get caught in quicksand every week on the Dukes of Hazzard. That's what did it for me - Saturday evening, tea, crumpets and some poor bloke going 'glub, glub, glub' under the sand...

emmatmg · 21/02/2005 22:02

ut if it's on a beach the it's just all sand.

You can dig and dig and dig on a beach and still get sand, so why does just that (didn't say it snafu) bit get saturated, just there.........why doesn't the water dispurse(sp?) everywhere???? or why doesn't it go down and down and down all the way to OZ

Don't worry. My mind is blown......we could be here all night and I still would sctratching my head.

emmatmg · 21/02/2005 22:03

New fact about me.

I don't understand how planes fly and what makes quicksand quick.

wobblyknicks · 21/02/2005 22:05

emma - its not really water going across the top of the sand that does it, its when water pushes up from underneath the sand, like because of an underground stream, or heavy rainfall coming down from cliffs etc, and the water pushing up fast saturates the sand.

Earlybird · 21/02/2005 22:07

snafu - you've just reminded me of another little known/almost forgotten fact about myself! I had a few dates with the dark haired half of the 'Dukes of Hazzard'. It was in California. He took me out for a long ride on his motorcycle - no helmets of course - and we went to a restaurant right on the beach north of Los Angeles.

emmatmg · 21/02/2005 22:08

that was my head!

pmsl

WideWebWitch · 21/02/2005 22:09

emmatmg, I have only read your post, not even the rest of this thread but I don't understand how planes fly either! Or how boats float! Durr at both of us

wobblyknicks · 21/02/2005 22:09

LOL emma!!! Much the same as me then, I can remember explanations and trot them out but doesn't mean I understand them!!!

snafu · 21/02/2005 22:10

Earlybird - hope you kept one eye out for the quicksand. You just can't trust those Duke boys
