Roll Up people and help me with this! A good quality wine has gone to my head and given me the courage to ask out on here….
My wonderful daughter has been in a relationship for the past few years! But her partner lives away, a very long way away!! Never bothered me till now because they have travelled around without mummy!
Things are now at a point where my daughter wants me meet her partners family, also to get engaged, so they want ole me in person, over there! Now here’s the thang! I’m hugely overweight! The thought of flying fills me with dread! Sooooo much to take in! Squishing my flab into a plane seat, the obvious stares and panic from the other passengers as I waddle up the isle, getting to and using the bathroom which I will use a lot en route because stress overworks my bladder! It all freaks me out! I know I can buy two seats, use seatbelt extenders around my big tummy! Look, I’ve even watched online videos of other fat women, looks like an awful experience. I don’t want to be like poor Kate from the This Is Us flight scene on Netflix!
Having the engagement over here is not really possible because where they want to be is very special to them!!
Come on! Encouragement please!

Look at seat guru for seat pitch sizes for different airlines and planes. It's a really helpful website. Don't stop yourself from going because you'll have a wonderful time when you're there. We all come in different shapes and sizes so don't beat yourself up. Flowers

I flew to Japan for work as a size 24 but was fortunate that they still hadn’t opened up tourist visas after Covid and so there was nobody sitting next to me. With that said, a lot of my excess weight is belly, so I didn’t feel especially cramped in the seat. Just a snuggish fit. Same on the connecting flight back from Helsinki to London, where I did have someone next to me, and it was all fine, so I think the weight distribution is key here.

I asked for the seat extender as I boarded, just as a precaution, and it was all very discreetly handled. I was told by cabin crew that the loo on one side was bigger than the other, so worth checking that out as well.

I believe there is one airline in the US that gives plus size passengers the second seat for free within the US, so that’s probably worth a Google if it looks like you might need a connecting flight: maybe that’s the solution if you cruise over?

Sadly I do carry weight on my bum and thighs too.

Has anyone got a link for those Pee Pants please? I think I need something like this due to my urgency to need an inconvenient wee on long journeys etc.

Also, I'm going to delicately ask this and don't eat me alive please..... but do these pants and incontinence pads ahem.... smell of wee after a while? Thanks.

OP I hope you get on that plane and have a fabulous time with your daughter and enjoy the celebrations!

No they don't smell.

I first started wearing them when I was a youngster at festivals.

Couldn't be arsed to walk to the toilet at night

Flustration · 23/01/2025 22:31

I have no practical advice OP, but I really hope you find a way to make it work.

I think some airlines have quite generous policies on second seats and some of the large planes have accessible bathrooms, so definitely worth a google to see what's available.

Somedayze · 23/01/2025 22:34

Please consider booking 2 seats or an upgrade.

I would hate to sit next someone spilling in to my seat. I had it on a train the other day and it was horrible.

I know that's hard to hear and has no bearing on you as a person, but it is the truth I'm afraid. I think airlines need to think about thos as people are grtlarger across the board and it's not fair on anyone to cram us all in.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 23/01/2025 22:36

Well, I am here to recommend Mounjaro, and it really pisses me off that people are mocking that. It's clear the OP is very overweight and if she could lose a bit of weight it would help her an awful lot.

Let's do this! I got very stressed going through security once before, so I have a sunflower lanyard. I will smile bravely at the cabin crew and not be ashamed to ask for help.

Edited

Sunflower lanyard? I think my greatest fear is the looks and the loo!

A long painful divorce piled on my pounds and I never expected to fly ever again! My dd has been jetting about as a size 22, her partner is about the same and they have no problems. Good ole mummy here needs to get her arse on that plane and not worry about getting stared at or fupa trapped between her thighs in the tiny plane toilet, aaaaaaargh! 🍷😂

Please buy two seats. I had the misfortune of sitting beside a large woman on a flight two years ago. I ended up with bruised ribs and soft tissue damage. Plane was full so couldn't move.

I’ve just come back long haul premium economy night flight and couldn’t recline my chair at all as the lady behind me was too large. It was so uncomfortable.

what made me feel worse is that she reclined the whole way whilst I was sat bolt upright.

first world problem I know.

whynotwhatknot · 23/01/2025 22:37

premium in ba is omfortable for larger people im a 22 an an use it no problems

whynotwhatknot · 23/01/2025 22:41

@Onetimeonly2024 Personally I hate standing up on a plane (there is nothing underneath me and it freaks me out!)

Oh wow I have never thought of it like that. New fear unlocked 🤯.

But sitting down, there is still nothing.. Just a mile or so mile of empty air.

Anand25 · 23/01/2025 22:43

You also do need good travel/health insurance to travel to the USA - make sure you get cover

Seriously: a hospital will take your insurance details first, then treat you.

You sound very American for someone who lives in the UK.

Have you got good health insurance?

How heavy is your daughter?

Buy three seats between you.

Health insurance isn’t too bad. My daughter is 22-24 stone and her partner is about the same.

If you have the money for business class, do you have the money to sail? Transatlantic cruise is amazing. Take your time, make it a holiday, no need to worry about fitting in the ship!

It's awful being trapped in a Window seat by someone who literally invades your space by rolling onto you.

DS as a teenager had it coming home on a packed coach - a really large person fell asleep on a 2.5 hr journey squishing him hard against the window - it doesn't feel nice to be physically engulfed, and in an accident, it could be hard to get free.

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 23/01/2025 22:51

FlabbieAllie1978 · 23/01/2025 21:42

That is an option we discussed too, but I think at 29 stone, would only be a few pounds lost by the deadline!! 😩

When are you going?

you’ll lose a couple of stone super quickly.

im being honest when i say that I don’t think I could live happily bring so worried about my size that it over rides the excitement of a fabulous trip.

i want to lose a stone, but that’s vanity and my size doesn’t impede my life at all (I’m a 12).

this coukd be a fabulous motivation for you xx

Especially if you and your daughter travel together, btw. Share a cabin and it becomes much more affordable than you might think.

delta and American Airlines have nice big seats, deltas premium economy especially. Big plus is their cabin crew tend to lovely middle aged ladies not dollies. So lovely. If you book via the telephone direct, lay on the butter, tell them why you want to fly with them and why it’s so special and you stand a really good chance of an upgrade to business from premium economy. Worked for me! Have a lovely time xxxx

Catofthesouth · 23/01/2025 22:54

sorry, “tend to BE middle aged” xx

Well, I am here to recommend Mounjaro, and it really pisses me off that people are mocking that. It's clear the OP is very overweight and if she could lose a bit of weight it would help her an awful lot.

Why do people keep trotting out the use of Mounjaro on these threads? You have NO idea of the OP’s medical back ground, NO idea if she has an eating disorder and NO idea if she has mental mental health issues. For goodness sake just stop with the recommending Mounjaro, fine if it works for you, great, crack on but bloody stop with advising others to take it. It’s a personal choice.

OP book 2 seats if you’re worried, that’s probably the easiest option. It’s absolutely no fun being crushed next to anyone on a flight and I say this as a slim person fed up of others expecting me to share my seat because they want the arm rest up.

Choose your airline wisely. According to this website you will get 3 inches more seat width in premium economy on a Virgin Atlantic flight than one with BA.
