I had forgotten this:

"The literary woman, unsatisfied, agitated, desolate in heart and entrails, listening every minute with painful curiosity to the imperative which whispers from the depths of her organism "aut liberi aut libri [either children or books]."
?Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols

Ten years ago I would have turned the page with a sigh and a sneer.

Today...?

He's overtheorising I think. This is the "pram in the hallway" with knobs on.

Isn't the main issue that when women have children they grow up pdq and have to spend a lot of time dedicated to others and therefore don't have much spare time to dedicate to thinking about exactly what eating a madeleine is like

onebatmother · 11/01/2008 17:05

lol monkey and margo!

IorekByrnison · 11/01/2008 17:33

Think you've hit the nail on the head Margo. One is too busy wiping the madeleine off the walls.

onebatmother · 11/01/2008 17:36

"baking madeleines", Iorek, surely?

onebatmother · 11/01/2008 17:46

in fragrant kitchen, with the sound of children's laughter echoing through the house?

IorekByrnison · 11/01/2008 17:48

Yes that's right. It's like a Doris Day film round my house...

Swedes · 11/01/2008 17:53

Caster sugar is key and the lemons should be unwaxed, much like my bikini line.

Threadworm · 11/01/2008 17:56

My bikini line is much like Nietzsche's moustache.

fireflytoo · 11/01/2008 18:03

...I was told that when I had children I won't have time to read anymore... ... I just had fat BF babies.

Swedes · 11/01/2008 18:05

Nietzsche's moustache

onebatmother · 11/01/2008 18:10

can't see nietzsche's bikini line/moustache swedes, link won;t work!

IorekByrnison · 11/01/2008 18:12

I heard Nietzsche favoured the Brazilian

Threadworm · 11/01/2008 18:17

g/450px-FriedrichNietzschedrawnbyHans_Olde.jpg My bikini line

Threadworm · 11/01/2008 18:17

Whoops try again

IorekByrnison · 11/01/2008 18:19

no that's not working either.

The suspense is unbearable.

Swedes · 11/01/2008 18:19

Nietzsche's 'tache or Threadworm's personal neglect? You decide

Swedes · 11/01/2008 18:20

Is anyone else humming ZZ Top songs?

Swedes · 11/01/2008 18:21

Threadworm - that is the very link I tried originally. It is a whole lot of moustache isn't it?

Threadworm · 11/01/2008 18:24

These highly intellectual threads on mumsnet just prove the falsity of Nietzsche's dissing of mothers' creative potential, don't they.

IorekByrnison · 11/01/2008 18:24

Wow. Threadworm you must be a whole lotta woman.

IorekByrnison · 11/01/2008 18:27

Yes quite Threadworm. If old merkin 'tache could see us now he'd be eating his words.

onebatmother · 11/01/2008 18:30

lolololol at both of them! I had NO idea!
can you imagine a leetle bit of front-bottom/moustache action with Frrrriedrrrrrich? It would be almost.. bestial.

And oh god, think of the food bits that would be hiding deep beneath the combed outer layer of mouth-fringe.

IorekByrnison · 11/01/2008 18:31

It's true - highly unhygenic. No wonder he was having trouble with his entrails.

onebatmother · 11/01/2008 18:33

lol Iorek

And his literary ladyfriend, "listening every minute with painful curiosity.. to the snuffling animal burrowing down below"

onebatmother · 11/01/2008 18:34

fireflytoo ye-es. Ye-es, me too.
