Lowri Turner talks about mixed Indian/White babies (well, hers actually) in todays Guardian, what do you all think?

Full article here

She says things like

But we dont live in an ideal world and the way we all look matters. My daughters appearance is an issue to others as well as myself. A (white) friend visited yesterday and having examined the baby, she announced: Shes getting quite dark, isnt she? And I am ashamed to admit that in a reversal of what happens on holiday when you study your skin in the mirror every day hoping for a deepening tan, I too now find myself examining my daughter for signs that her skin is becoming a deeper shade of brown and being perturbed if I find them.

I am at this. My ds is half Indian.

And:

While I genuinely dont think that my not being Indian was a factor that counted against me with my husband or his family, I did underestimate the difference between our cultural backgrounds when we were first together. Our daughter will have to cope with being the product of two very different cultures. She will have to negotiate her own cultural identity, and I know too little to really help her.

I am intending to leave the Indian side of my daughters upbringing to my in-laws. This may seem a cop out, but, frankly, Im too knackered to do otherwise. If I had adopted her, social services would probably whip her away. However, working and bringing up three children, I havent the energy to learn Hindi or make my own lassi

BTW Ive taken apostrophes and quotation marks out as they come out strangely in preview but you get the gist.

She just mulling over how she feels. She had the baby 10 weeks ago and she's split up with the father, her second husband.

Interesting she didn't know he was Indian when she went out with him at first because of his Scottish accent and pale skin. How could she not know? Also she is concerned because the daughter doesn't look like her. That's interesting. My 5 children do look very very different from each other (same father) but whether they look like me isn't really much of an issue.

Then she wrotes
"There is also an inescapable issue of status. Judgments are made about a white woman who gives birth to a black child. She is stereotyped as a Vicky Pollard figure, eking out her days pushing a buggy through a supermarket car park, wearing saggy leggings and fagging it. This image has been captured on screen by Kathy Burke as Waynetta Slob, who memorably declared that she wanted her very own "little brown baby" just like all the other mums she knew on the estate. Am I one of these women now? Apparently, yes - particularly since I am now a single parent, having split up from my daughter's father."

Am feeling v annoyed by this article now - surely she must have REALISED when she married an Indian man (and presumably she must have found out before the wedding - that paragraph 'I didn't realise' is really irritating too) that their children would be mixed race. I wonder if it's because it's a dd, and she wanted a 'mini-me' as someone said further down.

How awful to WRITE these thoughts in the press though - I can understand someone having strange feelings after having a baby, but PUBLISHING THEM IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN? How will her dd feel if she ever reads that? What if she gets a hard time at school because of her skin colour, and her mum tries to reassure her and this article pops up? It will simply reaffirm any doubt that she is 'not good enough' because of her colour.

I've just done a quick search on Lowri Turner. She's homophobic as well, nice.

Yes, she is mulling over how she feels but still, she feels that she feels perturbed at the colour of her daughter's skin. Vile.

Oh www, as the stallion says, we all know Lowri is totally barking
She just crashes through people's sensibilities with her ranty unbalanced perspective.

WideWebWitch · 07/07/2007 13:47

oh ykwim, too many feels in there!

more "feels" than functioning brain cells in lowri's uncrowded cranium www

WideWebWitch · 07/07/2007 13:48

True Marina. Why is The Guardian printing this shite? I may have to write to them but not sure I can be arsed.

Perhaps the Western Mail managed to offload her?

WideWebWitch · 07/07/2007 13:52

Dear The Guardian

I am not ashamed to admit that in a reversal of what happens on a usual Saturday when I study your paper hoping for good writing I now find myself examining your family section for signs of racist views from dodgy journos and being perturbed when I find them.

I am now intending to leave the liberal side of my brain to other papers. This may seem a cop out, but, frankly, I'm too knackered to do otherwise.

I read this today and felt shocked by it too. I read it in complete disbelief.

Marina · 07/07/2007 13:58

www, I recommend the Telegraph. When you come across some idiotic columnist with loathesome views you don't feel morally conflicted about wanting to spit on their grave etc
And its travel and family life features are really quite good...

LOWIRI TUENR IS A WANKER

Mercy · 07/07/2007 14:15

I have re-read the article now.

LT is either not very intelligent or incredibly naive - or probably both!

Where has she been for the last 30 years? Why doesn't she know her dd is not black?

theStallionOfSensibleness · 07/07/2007 14:17

she has a huge issue in decision making doesn tshe
if she were an offfender ifd put her on " think first" probaiton programme for abotu 20 years.

Id also anaylsse her realtionship wiht her parents - i wonder what their marriage was like - wonder if hte triplets thing leaves a lot of competitveness int eh family

ApuNahasapeemapetilon · 07/07/2007 14:19

omg not read whole thing - just excerpts and fibd it
glad i am not lowri in 15 years when her dd reads it

serenity · 07/07/2007 14:24

That article made me feel very uncomfortable and a bit sad really, probably because personaly I love seeing all the bits of DH that come out in the DCs. Weirdly the two of us were actually looking at DD this morning and commenting that she's actually darker than both me and DH, she's got beautiful olive skin (DH is Greek Cypriot rather than Indian btw)

ApuNahasapeemapetilon · 07/07/2007 14:24

it is shocking the guardian print it
i must be 'vicki pollard ' -like too

i have always found any mix of race generally more attractive than 'pure white'

theStallionOfSensibleness · 07/07/2007 14:24

well that another racial slur wso dont go there.

mumemma · 07/07/2007 14:27

LT's in other papers today blabbing about splitting up with husband no.2 and having to cope. She had promised before they got married that he would not be public fodder for her columns but one of today's articles has a photo and all sorts of personal details.

Wickedwaterwitch - did you see that Liz Jones is dating her ex again - why oh why? They're both writing about it, of course.

policywonk · 07/07/2007 14:27

Most of my family are tiny little Welsh runts with huge arses. However, unlike LT, they do not talk out of them.

Marina · 07/07/2007 14:29

tiredemma, you answered your question right after you posed it . One wonders if Liz and her ex would cut off their own hands if it would make a good story
That has to be one of the more flattering yet lifelike photos I've seen of Lowri lately
