Thinking of applying for a job in saltley, B'ham. does anyone know what its like? And suggest areas within 10miles or so that would be nice to live in. The job is in a school in saltley, don't want to live there or too close by! Thanks

oh I know Cod. When I was growing up I cant remember any families in Kingstanding who were ethnic minority. The first time I went to vote in the local elections, the BNP and National Front were loitering outside polling station with bloody flags.

Poor Dp, I often fail to realise his sheer horror when I took him from his quaint family home in hereford and brought him into the depths of Kinstanding.

NuttyMuffins · 03/04/2007 15:41

Really Horace, mind you I only ever go to the park and round the shops.

pjsmum - in response to your question, saltley isnt one of the nicest areas and many of the neighbouring areas are pretty much the same.
Your very close to the M6 and some large industrial areas.
Saying that though to work there would be ok as you can travel in, however i would strongly suggest looking for property a little further away.

No-one has mentioned Bearwood, I cannot think why. Home of my Young Ones-type student existence in 1984 (chicken feet from butchers next door in our back yard, someone had kept a guinea pig in our oven the previous year...)
Sounds like Kings Heath has gone a bit off since my day, I used to love it there, and
Moseley too.
Found Harborne/Edgbaston a bit surburban tbh, pretty though they were.
Smelly Selly had its nice parts too

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 03/04/2007 15:50

Did you live in Kings Heath Marina?

OrvilleRedenbacher · 03/04/2007 15:51

OrvilleRedenbacher · 03/04/2007 15:52

NuttyMuffins · 03/04/2007 15:52

Alot of my family live in Newtown and Aston, christ knows why they are still there, although that said one has just moved to Longbridge so slight improvement.

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 03/04/2007 15:52

saltley isn't good.

Agree that that and the areas round it are a no go for living in really.

OrvilleRedenbacher · 03/04/2007 15:52

god newtown
our cat came from there

hes in the hood.

NuttyMuffins · 03/04/2007 15:52

Yep it is Cod, along with most other areas around edge of city centre.

tiredemma · 03/04/2007 15:53

yes it is, its a predominently asian area. it sort of merges into Alum Rock. its a very deprived suburb.

NuttyMuffins · 03/04/2007 15:53

LOL, I am scared of newtown, I never go visit my relatives there, always make them come to me.

OrvilleRedenbacher · 03/04/2007 15:53

i once had ot visit a kid on work epxierence near there.

NuttyMuffins · 03/04/2007 15:54

My dad used to stop at the chippy in Lozells on the way to my nans and I always either had to go in with him or lock myself in the car and I was flipin 17 then.

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 03/04/2007 15:54

Bits of Hall Grenn are ok too, but the bits away from Sparkhiull.

HoraceWimp · 03/04/2007 15:54

she was very nervous though. It has to be said

HoraceWimp · 03/04/2007 15:55

oh lozells is awful

Marina · 03/04/2007 15:55

No IGW but had friends in various establishments there
I lived in halls, yr 2 nr Cannon Hill Park and in final yr in Bearwood (but the Hagley Road end doncha know)

tiredemma · 03/04/2007 15:56

I just had a 5 week placement in Ladywood (or Ladyhood /the woodz) as they call it there. going to get the bus home was a horrifying experience. Gangs of yoofs etc.

flatmouse · 03/04/2007 15:56

Hows about Hall Green? Just "pop" along the Stratford road and turn right and you're in Saltley in no time...... (well Stratford Rd is a red route now!).

Bear in mind that Solihull-schools have diff hols to Birmingham schools. Suspect Sutton have their own as well. All different authorities.
