Did you know that wine comprises 85% water, 12% alcohol and 3% of other.

The other can be grouped as follows (not exhaustive btw since 1000 components have already been identified):

Acetaldehyde
Glycerol
Higher Alcohols
Sorbitol & Mannitol
Sulfites (usually gets a bad press as a food preservative even though it is naturally occuring, especially, sodium compound plus our body produces it)
Acid (mainly tartaric, malic, citric, and succinic)
Amino Acids
Esters
Minerals
Phenols
Sugar
Volatile acidity (Volatile acidity refers to the steam distillable acids present in wine, primarily acetic acid but also lactic, formic, butyric, and propionic acids).

So based on that, who is going to stop drinking wine?

but I wouldn't give wine to my kids neither. And def not while they sit in the buggy.

speedymama · 19/03/2007 17:08

The French give wine to their kids .. ........

(I would not give alcohol to my boys btw)

Oh I give them each a glass of red every night to help them get to sleep.

Can't think why they complain about hangovers the next day.

Must the whisky chaser they insist on afterwards.

beansprout · 19/03/2007 17:10

"The French" are used as the basis of a lot of behaviour on here!!

speedymama · 19/03/2007 17:12

This was aimed at adults who drink wine btw. I took it for granted that children do not drink wine.

Just trying to demonstrate that the frenzy surrounding the so called horror foods like fruit shoots (granted I have never bought one but if the boys had one, I would not have a fit) appears to me to be way over the top.

If the French do it, it's OK

(Except testing nuclear bombs in Pacific)

Mamazon · 19/03/2007 17:15

I can't stand fruit shoot's for the fact that they are marketed as healthy fruit juice and they clearly aren't....BUT they are not the worst thing on the planet and one every now and then wouldn't hurt.

i think its all too easy to take things to extreme. How many of those who wont give their child a fruit shit smoke?

PrettyCandles · 19/03/2007 17:17

I don't see anything grotesquely bad in that list. It's almost all stuff that is naturally occurring in our bodies or our food. Won't stop me drinking wine nor letting my LOs taste wine either. In fact, I've just had a cooking session with 6 and 4yo dcs, which involved a whole bottle of red dessert wine. And they're looking forward enormously to eating the dish .

Rhubarb · 19/03/2007 17:20

Methinks you have too much time on your hands!

Nothing on that list sounds too bad to me. But you forget the oak - our wine has oak in it too!

Caligula · 19/03/2007 17:20

I didn't know they were marketed as healthy

They don't look as if they are

HappyDaddy · 19/03/2007 17:21

Oak? Don't you get splinters?

Rhubarb · 19/03/2007 17:21

What's a fruit shit smoke? I need to make my kids try it!

Rhubarb · 19/03/2007 17:22

HD you are obviously an uneducated southern shandy drinker!

Greensleeves · 19/03/2007 17:22

Someone told me the other day that red wine commonly has pig's blood added to it

HappyDaddy · 19/03/2007 17:23

I am southern, yes. Wine? Only puffs drink wine. .

Guinness or single malt will do me, ta.

Rhubarb · 19/03/2007 17:23

Bollocks! That made me snort then!

Aloveheart · 19/03/2007 17:23

i hate wine.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/03/2007 17:24

My oak has wine in it.

Its a bugger to get out you know.

Rhubarb · 19/03/2007 17:24

sorry that was to Greeny!

To keep up with my wc roots I also drink Guinness and bitter, but as a Francophile I need my red oaked wine!

pointydog · 19/03/2007 17:24

I thrive on volatile acidity

Cappuccino · 19/03/2007 17:24

not me

don't get me started on coffee either

but then I let my kids eat fruit shoots if there's nothing else

which makes me a bad mother

in my favour though I always take them straight to A&E and have their stomach pumped after

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/03/2007 17:24

Greensleeves...whats wrong with pigs blood?

Give me a portion of black pudding ANY DAY of the week

HappyDaddy · 19/03/2007 17:25

Capp, can't you offer them piss instead? I'm sure that's much better than a fruit shit (well put whoever that was)

HappyDaddy · 19/03/2007 17:25

Mmmmmm black pudding....

speedymama · 19/03/2007 17:25

PC, that is exactly my point. How many times do we see comments like "they are full of chemicals". Yet everything we eat and drink comprises chemicals - our bodies are the most complex chemical factories on the planet.

If people sat down and checked out the ingredients in their food, they would realise that a great deal of them are based on naturally occuring compounds.

e.g. flavonoids such as anthocyanins are used as food colourants. They are naturally occuring plant colorants responsible for the red, purple, and blue hues evident in many fruits, vegetables, cereal grains, and flowers.
