I've just been to my local Morrisons and Sky have a stand down there and are offering free installation and a £20 Morrisons voucher on payment of your first bill. That makes initial outlay about £70 cheaper! I'm sure its not just my Morrisons, so you may want to 'think on!'
I also plan to ask for more discount if I recommend a friend - in for a penny in for a pound as they say!

Great, everyone switch, then SKY will have a monopoly and hike up prices and we'll all pay more! I'm not budging, I can cope without LOST for a while. There's no way Murdoch's getting any more of my money. Not having a go at you OP, just don't want to see SKY gain the complete control they want.

warthog · 05/03/2007 13:53

yup i'm with you there clarinsgirl. just bought a topfield which is essentially a sky+ box, but without the monthly subscription and package costs. i'll get lost off the internet or on dvd. sky can get lost. (geddit? . ok, crap joke.)

clairemow · 05/03/2007 13:56

Have to agree about Murdoch - does he want world domination?? - fears of Truman Show style life...

Iklboo · 05/03/2007 13:58

I'm with clarinsgirl too. It's about time somebody stood up to Monopoly Murdoch. We can order Lost etc from our on-line DVD rental place or from our Library.
NOW...if only Virgin have got that bloody Virgin Central problem sorted out.....

Enid · 05/03/2007 13:59

I don't get it

Sky did all the work, Virgin are muscling in and refusing to pay for it

I think Sky has been genuinely groundbreaking in this country - couldnt really give a shite about rupert murdoch

fannyannie · 05/03/2007 14:03

I'm with Clarinsgirl too - DH LOVES 24 - it's the only thing (apart from Top Gear) he actually sits down and watches every week. BUT he's decided he'll wait until this seasons comes out on DVD rather than switching (back) to Sky.

I don't care who did the sodding 'work' - Apple did the initial real work on home PC's.....but Microsoft are the ones that dominate now - and I dislike Murdoch and his empire more than I dislike Gates (and that's saying something )

Enid · 05/03/2007 14:05

oh yeah and richard branson is soooooooooo much more ethical!

fannyannie · 05/03/2007 14:07

Well he's certainly no worse than Gates.

And besides - it's Murdoch being bl**dy greedy and trying to increase what NTL/Telewest/Virgin (whatever you want to call them) pay for their channels.

We were with Sky for quite some time (too long in hindsight) and frankly got fed up with ever increasing charges with no better service.

charlieq · 05/03/2007 14:08

agree Monopoly Murdoch is a terrifying rightwing authoritarian- but as a Virgin Media customer I feel ripped off. we are getting a lot less for the same price. Branson should be offering us a discount, but as Enid says ethics are not a career capitalist's strong point.

Twinkie1 · 05/03/2007 14:08

Branson is just chucking his toys out of the pram - sky are under no obligation to sell certain channels to him and he is in a right old huff about it!!

Enid · 05/03/2007 14:09

virgin are letting down their customers badly - end of

I read an article that said Virgin were hiding behind their fluffy brand but trying to play hard - and they lost.

and that pathetic 'sky snooze' joke about sky news is really sad IMO

Twinkie1 · 05/03/2007 14:11

Man on TV assked the other day if his virgin subscription was going down because he wasn't getting the package he signed up for and Virgin said no what they give is still value for money - that says everything about them IMO!!

fannyannie · 05/03/2007 14:11

You may be interested to know that Microsoft appears on the ethical consumer boycott list - Virgin doesn't - of course it doesn't mean they're perfect - far from it - but not as bad as Microsoft

charlieq · 05/03/2007 14:12

yes Branson's righteous posturing is irritating.
This is a business decision, no need to punish your customers for it.

Did think Sky very expensive though when I was on it. When I left, they suddenly started offering me lower price packages. I aske dthem why, if I was eligible for these, I wasn't given them before. No answer....

(this did not work with Virgin Media when I rang them this morning btw...)

Enid · 05/03/2007 14:12

Apple are not fluffy either

you lot are sucked in by branding!

fannyannie · 05/03/2007 14:12

hang on Virgin only took over a few weeks ago - lets give them time to develop and see what they're going to offer instead......I can't say - apart from Skyone with 24 on it - that we've particuarly lost anything - Skynews is cr*p!

Enid · 05/03/2007 14:14

yes can't wait to see what virgin come up with...

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 05/03/2007 14:14

I rang up Virgin and they halved the price of my TV package.

charlieq · 05/03/2007 14:19

Stripey what did you say to them to get that- they didn't seem to be getting my hints

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 05/03/2007 14:25

can't believe how many people are being sucked in by this. am with Enid.

Sky are under no obligation to sell particular channels to virgin or any other distributor for that matter. Virgin will lose customers over this, without a doubt, and they have a lot less customers to lose than sky do so they've brought it on themselves IMO.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 05/03/2007 14:27

stripy did you actually get that in writing? cause it wouldn't surprise me if they still took the same price from you next month.

ntl as they were are renouned for having the worst customer service of almost any company in the country, and that includes lying to their customers on a regular basis.

Caligula · 05/03/2007 14:29

Yep, I've now got TV, phone and broadband for less than half of what I was paying before with Virgin Media. Just rang them up and told them I was thinking of moving.

And I don't care about Sky, I never watch their channels anyway.

Aloveheart · 05/03/2007 14:31

think it's free installation of virgin cable! Just to stir the water. lol.

Lucycat · 05/03/2007 14:31

No they do reduce your prices if you threaten to leave - i do it all the time!

they did forget to charge us the £25 to move our broadband cable from one end of the house to the other though

I've never had problems with their customer service, apart from the fact that they shut in the eveninds and Sundays!

zippitippitoes · 05/03/2007 14:32

surely they actually did the takeover last june it's just the branding name they changed a few weeks ago so hardly just a bit of teething trouble

branson is a business man (or not some of the time) and he thought he could do a deal and he failntl are very economical with the truth it is how they sell their packages

at leas tiwhjt sky you know uyou will get sky channels for a certain price

I would steer clear of bundles from anyone though as you are tied in if something goes wrong as people with a broadband mobile landline tv package are finding
