How casual (dresswise) can you be at a wedding?

Just a bit of advice really. I have a wedding on saturday and need to get new outfits for me and the kids. My daughter age 4 and son and 2 1/2. I just dont want to waste money on clothes we will hardly wear again and wondered how casual we could get away with? I was thinking for my son maybe linen trousers and a casualish shirt and for my daughter just a summer dress, or pretty top with casual type skirt. For me I dont know. Can I get away with linen trousers and a niceish top? Advice please!! Will be off in a while to see what I can find.

Also all the dressier stuff I have is black, is this still a no-go for weddings? TIA
