DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 12/03/2015 18:06

Flowers Enjoyed his work.

iklboo · 12/03/2015 18:06

Someone call the gonagle.

ChiwetelFan · 12/03/2015 18:08

Really upset too. Had to hide in the loo to have a cry. I think somewhere in the back of my mind I thought he'd be cured. Really silly I know. It is like an old friend dying.

Hygellig · 12/03/2015 18:08

That's very sad news. I hadn't read any of his books for years, but I used to enjoy them as a teenager. He was extraordinarily prolific.
It used to say in the blurb about him on the book jackets "TP was born in 1948 and is still not dead." Sad

iklboo When 'Reaper Man' was first out (like... the day it was out) I was reading it on the London Underground and failing to suppress my giggles. I got some odd looks, as did the man nearly opposite me reading a paperback. He and I made eye contact a few times, at each others laughter, and then we raised books. He was reading 'Mort' and his eyes widened when they saw the cover of mine (it was probably one of those pupil-widen in attraction moments, only not at the 20-something me Wink )

It remains one of my favourite London memories.

DD1 (6) and I are going to start the Tiffany Aching books tonight.

Until we get the lilac emoticon this will have to do....

How do the rise up...

I can't believe there will be no more books. DS hasn't discovered him yet, and now when he does, there will only be a finite number to read. Sad

RIP.

TruelyTurtles · 12/03/2015 18:13

NC in honour.
I'm in tears reading the facebook page post quoted up thread.
I like to think that in a corner of the Drum Sir Terry is sitting over a thimbleful of scumble.
Two fingers up to the embuggerance.

Fanjango · 12/03/2015 18:14

I can't believe it. So sad. I looked foward to each new book. Now my collection would seem done. Hmm

TruelyTurtles · 12/03/2015 18:15

Can we have a wizard's or witches' hat emoticon please?

Susandeath · 12/03/2015 18:15

RIP Terry Pratchett. I can't decide which were my favourites characters, they were all good. He held up a mirror to our own world, and retold our lives in humerous ways. You will be sadly missed.

They rise up boot first...

Very sad news but am glad SirTP has been released from an illness he found almost unbearable.

I discovered the Disc as a late teen, I thought fantasy was for boys but my younger brother made me read a Watch one to begin with and I was hooked.

Agree absolutely with a pp who described Vimes as one if the sexiest men in fiction, I love both him and Carrot! I adore his strong female characters and can't wait for my girls to be old enough for Tiffany and all the rest.

RIP

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 12/03/2015 18:28

One of the three worders on Simon Mayo tonight was 'Discworld stopped turning'.

Sad
werekitty · 12/03/2015 18:29

In tears here, my cat is looking at me strangely.

RIP Terry

Casanunda · 12/03/2015 18:30

Utterly bereft at this news...I have been a fan since I read my first TP book 27 years ago, and have loved each and every one of them all since...The world is a slightly darker place today

NorthernChinchilla · 12/03/2015 18:33

Am currently re reading the series, as I have done repeatedly over the past 20 years, just on Thief of Time.

Wish they would stop reporting him as a Fantasy author though...
"You write books about love, morality, ethics, friendship and political power, and you include one bloody dragon ......"

Badly remembered on my part, but so true- when my DS needs to learn about how to approach the world and treat other people, I'll point him to the bookcase....

MeAndMySpoon · 12/03/2015 18:33

It's stupid of me, so stupid, but I keep on having this acute mental image of all my favourite characters, who are well and truly ALIVE to me, dammit - Sam Vimes and Sybil and Granny Weatherwax and Tiffany and especially Havelock Vetinari - all frozen, mid-action. Sad He left us so much and the world he created will continue to live in readers' minds, but it feels as if it's suddenly stopped, today.

Poor, poor man. So inspirational - he didn't let his blasted condition stop him, he buggered on through.

TopazRocks · 12/03/2015 18:35

We are all sad like somebody we knew, a friend or relative, has died. Sad Student ds phoned me for a 'chat' when he heard. He is a HUGE fan and absolutely gutted. TP was slightly younger than DH - it always casts a shadow anyway when somebody younger dies. The boys are now having a discussion about which book I should read - as, despite my best efforts, I've never read a Disc World book. The list is long and we are still waiting for eldest DS to provide his list. Smile

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 12/03/2015 18:35

Started reading the Discworld when there were only The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic out. Maybe 1986? They just got better and better.

I was lucky enough to meet him one evening in a pub in Clifton, Bristol, in about 1993 with a group of Mensa fans. (Not me, I mean I was a fan, but not in Mensa, my ex BIL was, so we tagged along.) He was as charming and eccentric as you'd imagine.

He always looked old! White beard and black hat. I think he was wearing a cloak. Grin

iklboo · 12/03/2015 18:36

When Mel Blanc died (voice of Bugs Bunny etc) died, they did a cartoon of all his characters stood around a microphone with the caption 'Speechless'.

I kind of feel the same about all Sir TP's characters now.

MrsPurchase · 12/03/2015 18:41

I imagine Death, just before he went to take Sir Terry, looking over at Granny Weatherwax. And her nodding, infinitesimally.
