If you had the chance to go to either Miami or Vegas which would you choose?

and why?

We have the opportunity to go to either place this summer with ds and I'll be 4 and a half months pg. I'm not well travelled and neither is dh in America. Online reviews are mixed so I thought I'd ask here. Smile

Miami, for the Art Deco buildings primarily andtrips to the Keys. Also the whole Cuban thing.
Vegas would hold zero attraction for me,being into neither gambling or showbizzzzzzzzzz.

Piffle · 03/04/2006 10:15

Vegas and by damn we WOULD be wed by the time we came home!!!!!!!!

Piffle · 03/04/2006 10:15

MeggLeVache · 03/04/2006 10:16

Never been to miami so can't comment on that place but Vegas is fantastic (went for my honeymoon) and I didn't gamble once as I hate it! The Gran Canyon is the most amazing site I have ever seen, we flew into it via helicopter which wasn't cheap but worth every penny. There is actually a fair amount for kids to do, one of the hotels is circus circus which puts on a show every hour and another hotel puts on a pirate ship act outside which is like watching a movie but in 3d. All the hotels are just wonderful to walk round and they all have excellent pools and restaurants. And the fountains at the Bellagio are brilliant. I can't wait to go back, can you tell? Grin

miami.. vegas is vile and like being assaulted by a giant hairdryer as it is so hot... too many crowds, too much heat, traffic jams etc, would be vile if pregnant

milward · 04/04/2006 23:31

Vegas - would do a day trip to the grand canyon & hoover dam.

elastamum · 04/04/2006 23:35

Vegas is great and the grand canyon is awesome. We dont gamble but still had a great time. If you are looking for a chilled out time with lots of sitting in the sun then south beach miami is also a nice place to go and you could also do the keys, its also not nearly as far and the time differnece wont kill you

handlemecarefully · 04/04/2006 23:36

I've been to both - and both are excellent choices.

Miami - other people have commented on (and it's a great place).... Re Vegas - only a stick in the mud could actively dislike it. It's pastiche, it's larger than life, it's a bit crass but it's fun.

For instance, at the Venezia hotel you can take a gondola ride in a the hotel's indoor shopping area (how surreal is that!), there are erupting volcanoes at other hotels and all sorts. Basically it is one large, free themepark on a very grand scale.

handlemecarefully · 04/04/2006 23:36

Oh and we probably gambled about £5 in total whilst in Vegas.

ItalianJob · 05/04/2006 09:08

I think Miami would be more scenic, and more to do with the kids. Vegas would be interesting more in a tacky sort of way.

mojomummy · 05/04/2006 09:49

Miami - great beaches, great shops, great food

oliveoil · 05/04/2006 09:56

I got married in LV so has good memories for me (barf), I didn't gamble but wish I had known how to as I wanted to throw some chips about a la Sharon Stone in Casino.

Tons to do for children, lots to see and you have those buffet things so easy to feed them.

Stay in the Mandelay Bay if you can, best one imo and they have a pool.

Never been to Miami so my opinion is not biased in the slightest!

zippitippitoes · 05/04/2006 09:58

vegas doesn't appeal to me at all

so definitely miami

april74 · 05/04/2006 10:28

Would be Miami for me, I find the whole LV think a little "too much" for me personally.

CountessDracula · 05/04/2006 10:29

Can't you ask to go to SF instead Grin

Miami. Have been and it's fabbo. Vegas doesn't appeal to me one bit.

DaddyCool · 05/04/2006 10:34

been to both. Vegas is incredible. go to vegas.

(and surprisingly nice looking place to live!)

DaddyCool · 05/04/2006 10:36

whoah! wait a minute! small child and preggers... go to Miami. Leave Vegas for awhile. it'll always be there. Though vegas isn't dodgy or anything it really isn't geared towards kids and the flight is horrid.

DaddyCool · 05/04/2006 10:37

Miami is great and the areas around it are fantastic. The south of Florida is far less cheesy than the north.

Go to Naples/Marco Island/Sanibel area if you can.

wilbur · 05/04/2006 10:47

I've been to Miami twice while pregnant - it's great fun, esp if you stay on or near South Beach. If you get tired of the beach (the water can sometimes be a little rough and cold, being the Atlantic) there's a wonderful outdoor swimming pool with kids area in the park right in the middle of the S Beach where you can chill out on loungers while ds plays. Good food and shopping and watching the kooky world go by. We also hired a car for 2 days and drove up to Orlando to have a look round and go to SeaWorld - ds1 was just 2 and he loved the fish, killer whales and flamingos. Didn't do any other theme parks as we didn't feel it was worth it. Vegas is fine, but a bit full on for me, masses of people and mega noisy. Miami much more laid back.
