If you had the chance to go to either Miami or Vegas which would you choose?

and why?

We have the opportunity to go to either place this summer with ds and I'll be 4 and a half months pg. I'm not well travelled and neither is dh in America. Online reviews are mixed so I thought I'd ask here. Smile

Miami definitely
Vegas is dull unless you are boozing and gambling

laura240 · 05/04/2006 12:26

Miami is a great place to go. Beaches are gorgeous, loads of things to do with children and lots of shops for you to enjoy!

desperateSCOUSEwife · 05/04/2006 12:28

Vegas without a doubt

Chandra · 05/04/2006 12:43

Miami, shorter flight to start with :)

Never been to Miami but it is my must-go list (love art deco)

About Vegas.... I went there for a convention and really, didn't understand the fuss at it, it's just like visiting a film set: every thing is fake or synthetic! and in many occassions tacky. I find gambling boring (even if I'm winning Wink) so I might be biased. Many people find the best attraction to take a walk around the hotels or go shopping. Shopping I understand, but going all the way over there to see a plastic representation of what we have so near in Europe... waste of time, and I believe that to take children to see this, they would have a better time in Disneyland (Oh... wasn't Disnerworld in Florida too? another point for Miami!).

AS for the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon, I would love to take DS there but when he is older and could join in other activities and particularly when he would be able to appreciate the beauty of it (ATM I would imagine an "is that it???" question from him Grin.

bluejelly · 05/04/2006 13:01

Miami, loads classier

RTKangaMummy · 05/04/2006 13:12

There is loads to do with children in VEGAS with children

Exabilbar hotel like a castle with knights.

red rock canyon is a nature reserbe that you can explore and wonder around

The heat in vegas is a dry heat whereas Miami would be very humid and horrible in summer

LasVegas without a doubt.

alp · 05/04/2006 20:12

I am going to Vegas in May (adults holiday) so slightly different needs - 5 girls together i think we will be boozing and gambling in between lounging by the pools - but do you have to pay to use the pools even if they are in your hotel? Its something I heard and want to know!

lou33 · 05/04/2006 20:15

i have a friend who lives in miami , and has a condo in las vegas, so i would do both

sunchowder · 05/04/2006 20:23

Wow! Look at all these responses! Las Vegas and Miami are so very different--as you can see from the responses.

Las Vegas is like DisneyWorld for adultsbut also has lots to do for kids. The downtown shopping is unbelievableanything you could want. The hotels are fabulous, the Belligio, Venetion, Ceasar's Palace, New York New York has a roller coast running down the side of the hotel. Anything goes there--a bit bizarre, but what fun to see!! Outside of town you have the Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, (Ethel's Chocolates....) lots of things to see and do for kids and adults alike. I dont' gamble at all, but we still had a great time.

Miami is great also. Huge cuban influence, lots of great shopping, sun and lots of places to drive from there including the Keys, Sanibel & Captiva (which are fabulous for kidslots of shellsvery sweet place, I love it there). It is a lot more laid back that the center of Las Vegas.

It is a tough choice MeggLeVache

Frizbe · 05/04/2006 20:27

alp, never had to pay for a pool in vegas yet?!

I've never been to miami, so can't say re there, so will vote for Vegas!!

alp · 05/04/2006 20:38

Oh hanks about the pool thing - i was a bit WTF???!!! when my friend said seemed the most bizarre concept ever!

Chloe55 · 05/04/2006 20:43

No, I didn't pay for the pool, we stopped in the Luxor. We did, however, also try to use the pool at Mandalay Bay and you had to be stopping in the hotel to use it - maybe this is what your friend is thinking? Most of the other hotels with pools will let you use them free of charge though.

lucykate · 05/04/2006 20:46

miami, vegas too tacky for my liking

philippat · 05/04/2006 20:56

Vegas, it's more escapism.

Miami is gorgeous, no doubt about it (and if you're a beach person it's hard to beat the florida sands), but I found there's was always a slight feeling of danger.
Mind you, both will be stinking hot so I'd pick Vegas too because at least it's a dry heat.

MeggLeVache · 05/04/2006 22:03

Wow, I had no idea how many responses there were!

Ds will be 2 and I will be about 5 months pregnant at the time we go - I'm leaning towards Florida ATM although Countess has thrown a spanner in the works by suggesting San Fran Grin

Hadn't thought of Seaworld etc for ds (I think he's love that!)

OP posts:
handlemecarefully · 05/04/2006 22:15

Blimey - when reading this thread, don't forget to disregard the comments about Vegas from posters who haven't actually been there!!

Sunchowder puts it brilliantly...and philippat; I know what you mean, I loved Miami but also felt a slight air of danger (police arrested somebody in front of me within an hour of my arrival there which didn't help)

sunchowder · 05/04/2006 22:15

San Francisco is one of my most favorite cities in the world, but that wasn't an option was it?

sunchowder · 05/04/2006 22:17

Ah thanks HMC! I agree about Miami being dangerousuntones of Maffia - I know just what you mean. You have to be careful everywhere. I was just down there for some training. It really is like being in another country with the cuban influence.

sunchowder · 05/04/2006 22:17

I meant "undertones" of Maffia...

handlemecarefully · 05/04/2006 22:18

I love San Fran too !

On our honeymoon we did:

San Francisco,
Las Vegas,
Sydney
and Hong Kong - what a trip that was. Marriage has been down hill since then Wink

sunchowder · 05/04/2006 22:19

What a wonderful honeymoon HMC! I haven't been to Sydney or Hong Kong--I love to travel but things have been on-hold for me since the arrival of my DD...:) It is so nice to see you online!
