harpsichordcarrier · 05/03/2006 23:11

edam · 05/03/2006 23:12

rickman · 05/03/2006 23:13

snob (snŏb)
n.
One who tends to patronize, rebuff, or ignore people regarded as social inferiors and imitate, admire, or seek association with people regarded as social superiors.
One who affects an offensive air of self-satisfied superiority in matters of taste or intellect.

How is that a good quality?

hunkermunker · 05/03/2006 23:13

Am also an elitist (damn you, HC, for getting in first with that one Grin).

fastasleep · 05/03/2006 23:15

like my new phrase/typo - out and pout! Grin

I'll befriend anyone me, so can't be that snobby

rickman · 05/03/2006 23:15

e·lit·ism or é·lit·ism (ĭ-lē'tĭz'əm, ā-lē'-)
n.
The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.

The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

Sounds crappy to me!

I would term myself a passionate advocate of quality, but others might call me a snob.

harpsichordcarrier · 05/03/2006 23:18

rickman
elitism = the clever people should be in charge
more money should go towards funding good things, and none towards shit things
good art is better than bad art
good music is better than bad music
I don't think it is about perception
some things are better than others
some people are better than others at some things

rickman · 05/03/2006 23:19

Who gets to decide what's best though?

OP posts:
Hattie05 · 05/03/2006 23:23

I carry an air of offensive self satisfaction when my dd, in sensible shoes, walks by children in stillettos and flipflops Shock

I carry an air of non-offensive self satisfaction when my dd was offered free sweets by a lady in the street, my 3 yr old replied "no thank you" and the lady offering melted at the first child that day to turn them down.

In fact i carry an awful lot of self-satisfaction in such things, but as it is non-offensive most of the time, i shall answer no i am not a snob Smile

harpsichordcarrier · 05/03/2006 23:24

me rickman natch Smile

well some things have an intrinsic quality to them
that's what I believe

5N088Y · 05/03/2006 23:31

Must admit to feeling a little smug when ds1 was offered a lurid blue ice-pop at playgroup and said, "Mummy...what is that?" and refused to even try it.

Hattie05 · 05/03/2006 23:43

smug

adjective smugger, smuggest DISAPPROVING
too pleased or satisfied about something you have achieved or something you know:
a smug grin
She deserved her promotion, but I wish she wasn't so damned smug about it.
There was a hint of smug self-satisfaction in her voice.
He's been unbearably smug since he gave up smoking.

See i told you? not a snob, but smug. self-satisfaction without the offensiveness Smile

nannyme · 05/03/2006 23:58

snobbery is in the eye of the beholder, or something!

Snobs don't have to be posh or wealthy of course!

jco · 06/03/2006 06:48

i think its one thing to appreciate quality and the finer things in life, theres nothing at all wrong with that. what bugs me is people who look down their noses and make negative judgements just because somebody has less money

rickman · 06/03/2006 10:27

No more then0.

Well I have been called a snob before but that was just by scummy chavs Grin. No seriously, I believe the etymology of the word snob comes from 'sine nobilite' meaning without nobility and I like to think of myself as fairly noble (not by birth but by behaviour). So no I'm not a snob Grin

GDG · 06/03/2006 10:40

Agree with spidermama....but I am a snob really, yes. I think everyone is to some degree - it doesn't matter where you are in the social hierarchy, we are all snobby about something.

Mirage · 06/03/2006 11:39

I was regarded as a snob where we used to live, purely because dh & I were married, both of us worked & we had a car.I always used to speak to people in the street, said hello ect,but eventually got fed up of being blanked & left them to it.
