Florence and the machine - what's the deal??

In my keeness to catch up with the latest sounds, I was tipped off to check Florence - cue some tunes on Youtube - Drumming Song, something about Dogs, and a couple more.

and I ask 'what is the deal?' Looks lovely with spectacular hair but, the weakest of voices that is heavily over-produced! I wondered why she wasn't holding any notes before realising that's because she isn't singing any - chooses to shout-a-bit in short bursts and that's it.

Flo fans - tell me what I am missing, please?

Disappointed but looking for help,
Peaks.

I agree with you. I'm constantly hearing that she has an amazing voice but to me it sounds like someone who can't really sing shouting and straining a bit. It sounds OK on some of the recordings where presumably it's been mixed and tweaked, but not live.

Quite like the Rabbit Heart song, but her voice puts me off.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/01/2010 22:08

I don't get it either. I absolutely HATE her voice. It just gets on my tits. Sinead O'Connor's does the same.

JeremyVile · 03/01/2010 22:09

I'm kind of with you.
So wanted to like her - in fact I love drumming song - but haven't yet been able to listen to the album all the way through, only keep trying because ds likes her.
I just find the warbling and vocal gymnastics tiring to listen to.
I particularly cant stand the cover of you got the love, which has been everywhere for months - so sick of hearing it.

NotanOtter · 03/01/2010 22:11

i have loved her for a while - my daughter poo pood me but now tells me her friends are impressed with my taste

i like her voice
she can sing
has spirit
great tunes
good lyrics
hint of 80's rock about it!

FatGirlThin · 03/01/2010 22:13

I love the tunes but she can't sing. Shame really, drumming song ROCKS.

snigger · 03/01/2010 22:14

The harmonies on Rabbit Heart are tingly, and Howl is weirdly moreish - it's a grower, that album.

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 22:14

yes JV - it's you got the love that's such a disappointment.

Feels a bit like emperor's new clothes..'actually, she hasn't much of a voice despite what her advertising-expert father says...'

maybe we shouldn't fwd this thread to her PR department....

so what IS new and gud, please??

I hate her because she looks like a younger, thinner, prettier version of me

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 22:17

that's reason enough, tethersend.

Jeremyvile - totally agree with you re you got the love - leave it to Massive Attck, Flo murders it. I dont get her, maybe am just gettin too old, but I really think she is over hyped.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/01/2010 22:18

Just watched some of the songs I hadn't heard on YouTube to see if I could get into a bit more. I didn't. She's no Tori Amos.

tethersend · 03/01/2010 22:22

Wasn't 'You got the love' by The Source ft Candi Staton?

NotanOtter · 03/01/2010 22:22

i find her refreshing - even her look appeals- again harping back to the eighties when beauty was a less narrow margin

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/01/2010 22:24

Oh my God: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_ohj99qeBA&feature=related

Live Lounge session. It is PAINFUL, especially from about 50 seconds in. Seriously. Have got no idea why she's got so many fans.

DarrellRivers · 03/01/2010 22:25

Or to the Source and Candi Staton
Loved that track even before I got massively into dance music
quite like Florence though

daftpunk · 03/01/2010 22:26

she's fantastic, brilliant songs, great voice.....best female singer for a very long time...

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 22:27

Yes, Source ft Candi Staton.

I don't get Florence and the machine, but I was into Kate Bush and it sort of strikes me as an attempt to try to copy KBs wierdness.

Am into metal anyway.

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 22:29

you're right I think NAO - a bit 80's and, well, a bit tired rather than refreshing...the video to you have the love with her gyrating on a crescent moon is a sort of Fast Show mickey-take.

anyone got the inside on something good at all??

OP posts:
DarrellRivers · 03/01/2010 22:31

yyy, have thought exactly the same about her trying to be a kate bush type
wierd unusual singing voice, big hair, dramatic dancing etc

SqueezinAroundTheXmasTree · 03/01/2010 22:32

I like her. She's refreshing and I quite like 'you got the love'. It's one of those ones though where people will always say "Oh you can't beat the original".....tis a sign of getting old y'know....

Maybe try Temper Trap, they're quite good, a bit different.

fishie · 03/01/2010 22:32

i have rabbit heart on the running ipod. hated it for ages but now i have become reconciled.

not at all sure whether she singing shouting or augmented. WHo is the GUn and WNO is the KNIFe etc.

JeremyVile · 03/01/2010 22:32

Lordpanofthepeaks - Is that you Pan?

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 22:34

yes JV! I have been elevated in my recent absence....ha.
