Florence and the machine - what's the deal??

In my keeness to catch up with the latest sounds, I was tipped off to check Florence - cue some tunes on Youtube - Drumming Song, something about Dogs, and a couple more.

and I ask 'what is the deal?' Looks lovely with spectacular hair but, the weakest of voices that is heavily over-produced! I wondered why she wasn't holding any notes before realising that's because she isn't singing any - chooses to shout-a-bit in short bursts and that's it.

Flo fans - tell me what I am missing, please?

Disappointed but looking for help,
Peaks.

I quite like them/her. But she doesn't half look like Esther Rantzen.

LordPanofthePeaks · 04/01/2010 00:21

kiss with a fist - I took it that there will be a sophisitcated spin on that - I hope...

JV - it was Dee-sarst-er from start to finish. They played like they hadn't seen each other before. Brown should have been off. And Fabio - no you ain't!!

We won't be pasting anyone this month. Besides, City will have bought a whole new team by Wednesday.

Good, I'm glad it's not just me that doesn't like her voice. It's too shouty for my liking. She performed Rabbit heart on Jools Holland and didn't even attempt some of the notes.

I like her - she reminds me of my mis-spent youth in the eighties for some reason. There seemed to be a few female singers back then who sounded like her. She's also gorgeous, has legs to die for, and has a band with a cool name.

Have I got a girl crush?

purepurple · 10/01/2010 08:56

I don't normally like female singers, but I love Florence and the Machine.
I am an old 80's goth chick and she perfectly recaptures the spirit of Siousxie Sioux.
I saw her live very early last year and she was fantastic.
She was first on the bill, with Friendly Fires, someone else I can't remember and Glasvegas.

They were by far the best band that night. She blew everyone away.
She can sing, she has a powerful voice, she writes her own stuff and they have a harp on stage.
What else can you want?
BTW, Glasvegas were awful, we walked out about 3 songs in to the set. Something, I have never done before in 25 years of gigs.

What little music of theirs I've heard has been utter, utter cack. She has a honking, inexpressive voice and the cover of You Got The Love is beyond self-indulgent. Lovely hair though

TheFoosa · 13/01/2010 16:38

I heard someone on the radio descibe her as 'a bit Ethel Merman' which made me larf

I do like the album though

bubblagirl · 13/01/2010 16:59

i really am loving her at the moment there's something that is so original and refreshing i like the fact her voice hasn't been mastered in a studio and she sounds real love dog days are over and could just day dream to that all day really enjoy her

i even like her you've got the love its my ring tone on my phone lol each to our own i suppose pretty boring world if we liked the same things but at the moment for me she rocks

Songbird · 21/01/2010 12:46

I quite like Florence, but I have to want to listen to her iyswim, I wouldn't always be in the mood for her wailing and shouting. I like Bat for Lashes, more delightfully weird than old Flo who isn't nearly as eccentric as she thinks she is.

belgo · 21/01/2010 12:50

She ruins 'you got the love' her voice sounds dreadful, all over the place.

ruhavingalarf · 21/01/2010 13:17

agree w belgo

she murdered it. it was one of my faves

JonboySmith · 11/06/2023 09:12

It's obvious she can hold a note, but the way she does it... it's like cats being stretched from the wrong end with claws in a blackboard dragging down into the depths of oblivion and they know it.

Not sure why this thread has been resurrected but it came up on Threads I’m On and I came on to say that since I wrote 13 years ago that I hated her voice, I now quite appreciate her!

I was trying to find an artist that I can't remember who sounds like Florence and the machine but is actually nice to listen to and doesn't make you want to drill your ears out with a chainsaw. And I ended up here!

So it's my fault... sorry.
