Florence and the machine - what's the deal??

In my keeness to catch up with the latest sounds, I was tipped off to check Florence - cue some tunes on Youtube - Drumming Song, something about Dogs, and a couple more.

and I ask 'what is the deal?' Looks lovely with spectacular hair but, the weakest of voices that is heavily over-produced! I wondered why she wasn't holding any notes before realising that's because she isn't singing any - chooses to shout-a-bit in short bursts and that's it.

Flo fans - tell me what I am missing, please?

Disappointed but looking for help,
Peaks.

lol @ 'dresses like a stripper'!

pofarced · 03/01/2010 22:37

I thought she was brilliant at Glastonbury. I like her. Too many pathetic whiny women singers around. Little Boots and La Roux annoy me intensely. Both have thin little voices.

DarrellRivers · 03/01/2010 22:37

I can't decide about Lady Gaga
She has unashamed ambition
And I suspect is a lot more talented than the Eurodance stuff she is churning out currrently
Watch and see I reckon, maybe she'll just fall by the wayside

JeremyVile · 03/01/2010 22:38

Really good to see you!

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 22:39

ta, and you too. Have see you around in last few days but am far too British to let on.

Florence was good not Gaga I mean. Gaga at Glastonbury sang to a backing track. Awful.

daftpunk · 03/01/2010 22:41

yep dittany....she reminds me of Siouxsie

Lady GaGa is v.good....in a mental way.

JeremyVile · 03/01/2010 22:48

I cant help with whats new and gud. I'm kind of stuck on things I've liked over the last fewyears.
Definitely cant thing of any female artists of note.
Lady Gaga is interesting but basically she is filler and La Roux, little boots - its not even that I dont get them I just dont think there is anything to be got.

daftpunk · 03/01/2010 22:50

Duffy is V.good....nice and retro

daftpunk · 03/01/2010 22:51

Rockferry.. one of the best albums around

JeremyVile · 03/01/2010 22:53

The only new stuff I've liked is Them Crooked Vultures, Mumford & sons and Brendan Benson - if any of that is your bag.

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 22:54

yes dp - I have that one, and it is good but safe in the Tamla Motown/Petula Clarke groove?

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 23:04

yes scowl agree re the pepsi thing

JV - Them Crooked Vultures sound excellent - a sort of put-together of some really good muscians - in guitar god land! Will follow them up, thanks.

daftpunk · 03/01/2010 23:08

JV...i like most music...

listening to friendly fires atm..probably not really your thing, but worth checking out.

yep pan....she has a really good 60's sound.

JeremyVile · 03/01/2010 23:26

I quite like Friendly fires.
Actually I lied about no female artists I like - Ladyhawke isn't bad.

Oh thank god am not alone in thinking Emperor's New Clothes re F&TM. Her whole image and sound is contrived and mannered. Is her father really an advertising exec? Interesting.

And I think she looks much older than she claims

Molesworth · 03/01/2010 23:37

I thought her version of My Baby Just Cares For Me on Jools' Hootenanny was fabulous. But she does sound like Siouxsie crossed with Sinead O'Connor, it's true.

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 23:42

Flo - mother is a professor of art, speciality renaissance, and father is a sales/advertising/PR type person.

She's the perfect offspring then - "Pre-Raphaelite" hair - tick. Backing of a sophisticted marketing machine - tick

LordPanofthePeaks · 03/01/2010 23:50

indeedy.

cynics the lot of you

duffpancake · 03/01/2010 23:54

Is noone else at 'A Kiss with a Fist is Better than None?' That knackered F&TM before I even get to any discussion of voice, music style etc. No. It. Isn't.

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 03/01/2010 23:57
