Oh love Eddi Reader but also Boo Hewerdine who is often on tour with her and writes some of her best stuff. Think I have seen her 10 times now. Dh is refusing to go again

lol@misfit wasn't exactly an argument, more a discussion i just like talking music, don't get much chance in rl, although i prolly come across rather more arsey earnest in print than in person

millenniumfalcon · 18/01/2009 17:05

(damned namechanges - i'm usually puppydavies)

and lol @old thread i thought misfit's post was from today, that teach me to stray out of active convos...

Discovered Phil Ochs on youtube recently. Sadly, it seems he committed suicide about 25 years ago, what a pity. Great voice & nice looking too. I'd have climbed over Bob Dylan to get to him back in the day.

millenniumfalcon · 19/01/2009 22:21

at climbing over bob dylan. now this i must see. all i know of phil ochs is a line from a billy bragg song (which counts as a good recommendation too)

millenniumfalcon · 19/01/2009 22:27

sorry bob wins hands down

cheapskatemum · 20/01/2009 22:43

Well, not that I'd ever have been in that enviable position: in bed with the 2 of them

Which Billy Bragg song? (My first Head of Department used to teach his brother)

Haven't read the whole thread, but I heard Alison Kraus on Woman's Hour and I bought the album of 'O Brother, Wherefore Art Thou?' - she's fab, and there's loads more 'dustbowl' type acts on there.

millenniumfalcon · 20/01/2009 22:53

the song's (imaginatively!) called i dreamed i saw phil ochs last night

i dreamed i saw phil ochs last night
alive as you or me
says i to phil "you're ten years dead"
"i never died' says he
"i never died" says he

the music business killed you phil
they ignored the things you said
and cast you out when fashions changed
says phil "but i ain't dead"
says phil "but i ain't dead"

the fbi harassed you phil
they smeared you with their lies
says he "but they could never kill
what they could not compromise
i never compromised"

"though fashion's changed and critics sneered
the songs that i have sung
are just as true tonight as then
the struggle carries on
the struggle carries on"

with the song of freedom rings out loud
from valleys and from hills
where people stand up for their rights
phil ochs is with us still
phil ochs inspires us still.

i love the obwat soundtrack too, one of my favourite films

Is AK'S album worth a try, then, millenium?
I absolutely love her voice and the harmonies.

millenniumfalcon · 20/01/2009 23:18

i've not heard it nt - have you tried her myspace? that should have full tracks. last.fm has a few. i can certainly repeat the recommendation further up the thread for gillian welch if you like bluegrass/folk/country

Donk · 20/01/2009 23:23

Strawhead
