Flogging Molly

Bobbiewickham · 01/01/2009 17:50

Martin Simpson.

Saw him live a few weeks ago and he was fab.

Listen to "Never Any Good" and it will make you cry.

SnowOfHands · 01/01/2009 17:59

Oh how could I forget the Pogues.

I've interviewed Jez from the Levellers (post drug addiction- his not mine obviously) and Bob Dylan. Both highly interesting characters.

apuppy, have you ever seen the Levellers in their acoustic incarnation?

Beth Orton's okay but not great live, the stage swallows her.

I stand by Nizlopi. Live they are superb.

Julie Fowlis very good too.

daftpunk · 01/01/2009 18:01

i love the levellers...seen them a few times @ brixton acadamy, they are a brilliant band.

tbh...i'm more into linkin park (saw them at the o2....coolio) kings of leon/fall out boy/radiohead...and all the old punk bands...clash etc..

dh is even dragging me off to see keane next month lol.

i've never seen you on mn before...but i'll look out for you from now on..

daftpunk · 01/01/2009 18:04

oh rustybear....i love them....thanks

[email protected] have a fab job dude!

apuppydaviesisforlife · 01/01/2009 18:06

haven't had the pleasure soh.

have just remembered someone you'd have loved dafty - the tofu love frogs. maybe you came across them at festies early 90s? they were like a punkier rawer levs - their version of ewan maccoll's move along song was fantastic. twas pre-internets must google em see if anything survives.

apuppydaviesisforlife · 01/01/2009 18:09

they reformed

www.tofulovefrogs.co.uk/

apuppydaviesisforlife · 01/01/2009 18:11

and they're giving away their stuff for free. star of the hackney downs is another cracker

LaundryFairy · 01/01/2009 18:22

Another vote for Kate Rusby from me. I was given her Christmas album "Sweet Belles" and it is fab - just what you need to put you in the mood this time of year.

8oreighty · 01/01/2009 18:34

Old Crow Medicine show are great...

SnowOfHands · 01/01/2009 18:37

Old Crow Medicine Show are good! I saw them by accident too.

Why does my life on this thread play out as a series of accidents. It's like I don't know what I'm doing or where I'm going half the time. Oh God, it's true, may as well admit it.

8oreighty · 01/01/2009 18:48

Yes nothing they've done beats their Big Iron World Album though. Did you see them at the borderline in London? that was great....

SnowOfHands · 01/01/2009 18:52

Cambridge Folk Festival. It was an impromptu session. Was very impressed.

Completely forgot.

I LOVE Mauvais Sort, Canadian folk, high-octane, great fun.

Miyazaki · 01/01/2009 18:54

In my mind Tunng/Imogen Heap/ Joanna Newsome are folk, but perhaps no one elses...?

constancereader · 01/01/2009 18:59

Lunasa
Martin Hayes
Malinky

all wonderful

TheProvincialLady · 01/01/2009 19:03

Has anyone mention Albion Band yet?

Fab thread!

GeorgeAndTimmy · 01/01/2009 19:14

For rockier folk - I second Oyster Band - they are awesome and craftsmen at work. Also, The Men They Couldn't Hang, who are rawer but fantastic too.

RaggedRobin · 01/01/2009 22:43

i love this compilation

folk is not a four letter word

it has loads of great tracks by people like linda perhacs

also love tim harden

vashti bunyan

tim buckley (jeff's dad)

well, those are my favourites anyway.

SuperBunny · 02/01/2009 01:36

Right, this has been a great thread for me and I have discovered that I like:

the Carthys, Steeleye Span etc
Kate Rusby
Tim Buckley

am not sure about:
Maddy Prior
Ray LaMontagne
Seth Lakeman

and do not like Joanna Newsom

Will keep listening to your suggestions - have really loved listening to all this new music so thank you for all contributions.

maybe you'd prefer smog featuring joanna newsom's (i think?) boyfriend jim callahan.

puppydetox · 02/01/2009 11:53

i just thought of someone else, the decemberists. they're not usually as full-on folky as this, but the mariner's revenge song is genius

SuperBunny · 02/01/2009 18:57

I like both of them! Thanks

alicecrail · 03/01/2009 11:51

Try first aid kit on youtube. I absolutely love them

RaggedRobin · 03/01/2009 15:02

i'll second the first aid kit recommendation!

totalmisfit · 11/01/2009 21:02

The Levellers, The Pogues and Billy Bragg are all punk and folk.

Since the early 80's the two are not mutually exclusive, in fact it's a very exciting fusion and a nice way to stick two fingers up at sanitised music of all kinds

next you'll be arguing about whether Fairport Convention are a folk band or a rock band and i'll be saying for crying out loud that argument was declared null and void 30 years ago
