sherby....he's good.

trouble is a lovely song.

apuppydaviesisforlife · 30/12/2008 15:06

i'm partial to a little la montagne too (goes a long way) although being picky yet again i wouldn't call him folk. if we're heading firmly into acoustic/singer songwriter territory i'll throw king creosote in too.

daftpunk · 30/12/2008 15:31

someone's mentioned the levellers on this thread.....would never of put them in the "folk" catogory myself.

apuppydaviesisforlife · 30/12/2008 18:28

levs def folk [gavel]

daftpunk · 30/12/2008 18:54

yeah probably,....but more influenced by punk imo.

SuperBunny · 31/12/2008 01:22

I will allow the Levellers, since I still listen to them quite a bit . Am about to have a youtube fest, listening to all the suggestions on here, so thank you for all contributions.

My favourite thing to listen to atm is Am I born to die by the guy who did some of the music for Cold Mountain. If you aren't worried about the words, this is a really haunting version. Folky in the sense of traditional non-mainstream music.

I heart the levellers..have their set list on my wall

ThePlanningCommittee · 31/12/2008 01:32

Can't go wrong with Martin Carthy - he taught Bob Dylan all the styles, you know 'Banks of teh Nile' always does it for me.

Billy Bragg (or should it be Bargg?) also has a good repertoire ("you diggers all stand up for Glory stand up NOW!")

Quadrophenia · 31/12/2008 01:34

Billy bragg is fab

wrinklytum · 31/12/2008 01:37

I LOVE bb

Does Beth Orton count as a folk music artist?Central reservation is fab

ThePlanningCommittee · 31/12/2008 01:40

Quadro & WT - YAY for BB!

And yes Beth Orton defo counts*. But does Martha Wainwright...?

*and she is fab

SuperBunny · 31/12/2008 01:49

Martin Carthy is a GOD - any band with him in is worth a listen -eg Albion Band, Fairport, Steeleye Span and recent work with his daughter, Eliza.

and also those bands without him, after he left.

June Tabor -amazing voice
Maddy Prior ditto
Fairport Convention
Bothy Band
Karine Polwart

SuperBunny · 31/12/2008 04:29

Ooo, I am enjoying Kate Rusby and the Carthys - they sound like the kind of music my Dad listened to when I was younger. I wish I'd paid more attention.

I forgot - I like Johnny Flynn, too.

Does The Be Good Tanyas count as folk music?
Second Eliza Carthy and Kate Rusby.
I love Gillian Welch for kind of deep south American feel.
The McGarrigles?
Lori McKenna?

The BeGood Tanyas - LOVE THEM!

McGarrigles
McGarrigles Hard Times
Gillian Welch
Gillian Welch- Everything is Free
Kathleen Edwards- Hockey Skates
Lucy Wainwright Roche- I know vaguely- I think her stuff is lovely

plumandolive · 31/12/2008 10:23

Scottish new folk- Karin Polwart- Kate rusby-ish a bit

plumandolive · 31/12/2008 10:25

Wrinkly- I love Beth Orton!- do you like Gillian Welch and Lucinda Williams?

SheikYerbouti · 31/12/2008 10:30

Bellowhead - their album Burlesque is FAB. I listen it it all of the time.

Also Cara Dillon, Seth Lakeman, Levellers and Tim van Eyken.

harleyd · 31/12/2008 10:33

nobody mention the pogues? again, like levellers, more like folk-rock with punky twists, but still folky
oh love a lot of christy moore and bob dylan stuff

bossykate · 31/12/2008 10:35

apuppydaviesisforlife · 31/12/2008 10:37

plumandolive · 31/12/2008 10:39

OOOHH- Sheik- just listening to Cara Dillon- thankyou! It's lovely!
Cara Dillon

Oh- hang on- DODGY lyrics- "Who's going to stroke your pretty little feet when I'm over the ocean" ....hmmmnnn
"Who going to brush your long blond hair and wo's going to pay your fee when I'm over the raging sea?"

plumandolive · 31/12/2008 10:45

apuppy- Cat Power - yes- I love her too
The Greatest is..great
I think I like Gillian Welch marginally more for her deep south country blue grass feel....

daftpunk · 31/12/2008 14:20

the levellers are 70% punks i tell you....folk music is the sort of music you can have playing when your old aunts come over......you can't have;

"but jane is taking heroine
and paul is getting pissed,
steve is getting stoned
to fucked to fight".....

i love folk music.....but i'm a punk...and i am claiming the levellers.
