Will anyone recognise this description of a video and song?

I think that this song was within the last 15 years. I remember it on a Youtube video.
The singer is a white man in his 20s(?)
The song is about a young man revisiting his home - a place of abuse for him(?) and his mother(?) at the hands of a (step)father.

The video was of the singer outside the rustic home.

I have searched Google and can find nothing. Driving myself crazy!
Are there any musical savants out there in MN land?

Can you remember what style of music it was?

rosegoldwatcher · 07/08/2020 21:54

It was contemporary country is my best description.

If Mumsnet can't help, there's a subreddit where you might get an answer.

Vague notions that he may have been called James have got me nowhere!

Thank you both for posting.

I don’t think people watch videoclips nowadays. The good old days of MTV are long gone. I don’t even know what certain singers look like. Seriously.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 07/08/2020 22:05

Nickelback did something quite similar... wouldn’t describe them as country tho! Too Bad is the one I’m thinking of, total long shot mind!

rosegoldwatcher · 07/08/2020 22:10

@OnceUponAMidnightBeery - I know Nickelback - definitely not those geezers.
Was absolutely a soloist.

I do wish Youtube had a 'history of things I have listened to' feature!

Something by James Morisson?

rosegoldwatcher · 07/08/2020 22:15

@Hobbes8 - no not him - an American singer. Probably not called James at all! (That was a reach.)

Fatted · 07/08/2020 22:17

I was thinking James Morrison.

cosmopolitanplease · 07/08/2020 22:20

YouTube does have a history feature, if you were watching it signed in. I've used it to trawl back for a song I'd forgotten the name of.

rosegoldwatcher · 07/08/2020 22:20

Sorry all - I should have included 'American' in my OP.

It was a sublime song.

DaisyCrazyLazy · 07/08/2020 22:21

Jack Jones?

DaisyCrazyLazy · 07/08/2020 22:23

Jack Johnson, not Jones

rosegoldwatcher · 07/08/2020 22:33

Not Jack Johnson, sadly.

@cosmopolitanpleasecos - Oh how I wish that I had used 'sign in' back then...

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 07/08/2020 22:39

Didn’t think so! 😁

Can you describe the video?

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 07/08/2020 22:42

Sorry, as in was he an adult when he went back or flashbacks to his childhood? Etc!

Grapesoda7 · 07/08/2020 22:48

I thought small-town boy by the communards, Jimmy Summer ville, but defiantly not American or country music.

rosegoldwatcher · 07/08/2020 22:50

From what I remember - the singer walked around the property while he sang. I can't remember any scenes portraying the abuse; the words conveyed the meaning IYSWIM.

The house was a shambolic wood framed structure.

Jeez - if only I had a line of lyric!
You are all so patient!

Was it

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 07/08/2020 22:52

I know she's not male but isn't Pink Family Portrait is it?

rosegoldwatcher · 07/08/2020 23:04

Not Pink.
Not Billy Currington - way less traditional country than that. More Indie.

Following as curiosity has been peaked!

WhatRhymesWithTerf · 07/08/2020 23:25

I thought it might have been Mick Hucknell from Simply Red and Holding Back The Years but that's not within the last 15 years.
