Lyrics you love - a guessing game

MrsGuyGarvey · 11/02/2015 21:03

Anyone fancy a game? Post some lyrics you love/resonate say why you love them and other posters guess what song they're from.

Mine is "it was cold and it rained and I felt like an actor"

Whenever it's cold and rainy (I live in the North, this is often) and I'm walking down the street I often feel like I'm in a film and it makes me think of this lyric.

Ooh, Prince!!!! Smile 'Purple Rain'!!! Love the choice!!!

There is a link here too ...

Have to catch an early train
Got to be to work by nine
And if I had an aeroplane
I still couldn't make it on time
'Cause it takes me so long just to figure out what I'm gonna wear
Blame it on the train
But the boss is already there

Mindysgotswag · 01/12/2015 18:51

Drag! Xmas Sad

The Bangles. Manic Monday?

What's the link, Future? Xmas Confused

theredlion · 01/12/2015 18:54

Prince wrote Manic Monday Xmas Grin

Mindysgotswag · 01/12/2015 18:55

Ahh right!

I'd like to go back one time on a roller coaster ride
When life was just a game
No use sitting and thinkin' on what you did
When you can lay back and enjoy it through your kids

thefutureofpolitics · 01/12/2015 21:27

Yes Mindysgotswag and exactly right theredlion!! Smile And that is Queen 'These Are the Days of Our Lives'!! Good choice again!! Smile

"Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly.
I turned on the lights, the TV and the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you"

There is a (slightly tenuous) link to the last artistes here!

Mindysgotswag · 02/12/2015 00:23

Ordinary world. Duran Duran?

Mindysgotswag · 02/12/2015 00:25

You've got dust in your eyeballs, you got mud in your mouth
But it's your head, it ain't mine
I've got a madman of my own to contend with
Cursing in the cave of my skull

thefutureofpolitics · 02/12/2015 00:33

Yes, and the link is that both Queen and Duran Duran have / had a band member called Roger Taylor! Xmas Grin I told you it was tenuous! Hmm

That is The Waterboys 'World Party' Xmas Smile

"I've never seen you look like this without a reason
Another promise fallen through
Another season passes by you
I never took the smile away from anybody's face
And that's a desperate way to look
For someone who is still a child".

Mindysgotswag · 02/12/2015 21:31

Big Country. In the Big Country.

Another link here...

We serve an old moan in a dry season
A lighthouse keeper in the desert sun
Dreamers of sleepers and white treason
We dream of rain and the history of the gun

thefutureofpolitics · 02/12/2015 22:20

Yes! Ooh, good choice ... that is Sisters of Mercy 'Dominion / Mother Russia'. Is the link that Russia is a big country? Xmas Grin

There is a link here too (honestly!) ...

"I've been living in style,
Unaccustomed as I am
To the luxury life,
I've been hitting the town
And it didn't hit back."

Mindysgotswag · 02/12/2015 22:53

Yes!Xmas Grin

Elvis Costello. In the Face?

What's the link then? Stumped!

Mindysgotswag · 02/12/2015 22:57

Yes!Xmas Grin

Elvis Costello. In the Face?

What's the link then? Stumped!

Mindysgotswag · 02/12/2015 22:59

You can measure the strength of a human
By the weight of the love around them
One sweet light in the darkness
Guided us all like a pilot
That’s what you are to me...

Kind of a link here...

thefutureofpolitics · 02/12/2015 23:03

It was Paul McCartney 'My Brave Face', co-written by Elvis Costello Xmas Grin The link is (sorry for the tenuousness in advance ...) that Gary Marx, original lead guitarist of Sisters of Mercy, was later a teacher at Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts Xmas Grin

thefutureofpolitics · 02/12/2015 23:23

That is Gary Barlow / Elton John 'Face to Face' Xmas Grin Is the link 'Face' or is that too obvious?

Whoops, I only just saw that Hmm I'm just thinking of some lyrics and a link ... Hmm

thefutureofpolitics · 02/12/2015 23:29

How about? Xmas Grin

"I was sick and tired of everything
When I called you last night from Glasgow
All I do is eat and sleep and sing
Wishing every show was the last show"

theredlion · 03/12/2015 22:15

Super Trooper by Abba Xmas Grin

theredlion · 03/12/2015 22:15

This thread is brilliant, thanks OP.

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 00:19

Right, theredlion!! Xmas Grin And the link was that Gary Barlow wrote a song on Agnetha's latest solo album Xmas Grin I love this thread too, it is my favourite on Mumsnet by far! Xmas Grin

I'm sure it is somebody else's turn but I will post this because I'm listening to it at the moment and this is one of my favourite lyrics ever! ...

"How in the world you gonna see
Laughin' at fools like me
Who in the hell d'you think you are?
A superstar?
Well, right you are!"

theredlion · 04/12/2015 07:19

Instant Karma - John Lennon

That's one of my absolute favourites ever, I can bore for a good few minutes about why he wrote it Xmas Smile

If there is a link between him & Abba or Gary Barlow I don't know what it is.

This one has no link to anything that I know of.

You say the magics gone.
Well I'm not a magician.
You say the sparks gone.
Well get an electrician.

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 16:15

Haha, me too, I'm full of useless John Lennon information, love him! Xmas Grin Surely one of the greatest songs ever written! Xmas Grin

The link is really tenuous but amusing: In 2009, Gary Barlow was voted as Britain's greatest songwriter ... John Lennon came second and Paul McCartney came third. As much as I actually like some of Gary Barlow's songwriting, something is seriously wrong there!! Xmas Hmm

Ooh, love the choice: Massive Attack 'Better Things'!! Xmas Grin

How about? I love this thread, I hadn't heard this for ages! Xmas Grin

"My defences
Become fences
Now I'm stumbling
I change my face up
And if you think I'm fake up
Wait around till
Till I take off my make-up".

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 17:12

Also, for another John Lennon fan: If you haven't already seen it, I thought you might like this Xmas Smile ...

theredlion · 04/12/2015 17:53

Oh wow thanks, I'll watch it in bed tomorrow morning Xmas Grin

I know who the artist is but I can't remember the name of the song, it might come to me later!

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 18:16

You're welcome, I hope you enjoy it! Xmas Grin It is very interesting and some of it is quite moving too. And don't forget that the 8th December is the 35th anniversary of John's death.

We just booked a trip to Liverpool in the New Year for the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour too, looking forward to it so much! Xmas Grin

Haha, I will leave it with you! Xmas Grin
