Compiling a list of great covers. Have got quite a few but don't want to miss any out so what are your contributions?

Candy Flip's Strawberry Fields

Always had a soft spot for the sisters of mercy doing Jolene too Blush

I haven't read all the threads, so forgive me if this has already been suggested. I preferred Lulu's version of The Man Who sold The World to David Bowie's, but I preferred David Bowie's version of Sorrow to The Merseybeats. I think this usually has to do with the first version you hear, and in my case it was Lulu and David Bowie.

Nivaran's 'Man who sold the world' is great. My favourite version.

I prefer Robert Plants version of ' If I was a carpenter'
I love Ugly Kid Joe's cover of Cat's in the craddle.

Although I adore the original 'Turn the Page' by Bob Seger (how can you not?) my favouritre version is by Metallica ( although the video really upset me tbh)

I agree with the others who have suggested 'Wicked Game' by Him (although HIM are rubbish live it has to be said!)

Marianne Faithfull's 'Working Class Hero' spits venom! Brilliant!!

U2's 'Helter Skelter' is pretty good for U2!

I love Korn's 'Word Up' to Cameo, although I did like the original.

Metalliac's version of Whisky in a Jar is 1000 x better than Thin Lizzy's whose own version was better than the Dubliners! ( although I doubt James Hetfield and others knew where the Cork and Kerry mountains were!! Grin

Although not better but definatly different I do enjoy comfortably numb by the Sissor Sisters. I have both versions.

I prefer Cyndi Laupers ' I drove all night' to Roy Orbison.

so many songs I could go on all day!!

Nirvana - where did you sleep last night
Jimi Hendrix - all along the watchtower

YeGods · 12/05/2011 18:46

Kate Bush's version of 'Rocket Man' is great

horseyrider · 14/05/2011 15:54

A-ha - "Crying in the rain". They practically made this song their own.

Inertia · 17/05/2011 18:17

Pixies covers of Head On (even though I love the Jesus and Mary Chain original and you should find room for that somewhere!) and Cecilia Ann

The Fall - There's A Ghost In My House and Mr Pharmacist

The Damned-Eloise

Kirsty MacColl- Days and A New England

Breeders- Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Happy Mondays- Step On

VforViennetta · 29/05/2011 02:17

Who was Cecillia Ann a cover of?

I do love Head On by the Pixies, one of my favourite songs.

I can't listen to anything by Will Young because my mum adored him and one of his songs was played at her funeral. I dissolve into a heap whenever I hear his singing voice. Funnily enough though I watched that series with her too and don't generally go in for pop, I do love his voice though, odd that he has disappeared.

VforViennetta · 29/05/2011 02:22

Nevermind I googled [smle].

Posters may remember Brand New Key (I've got a brand new pair of roller skates), by the beautiful hippy Melanie. All very acousticy and clappy.

By way of contrast, a wonderful punk new wave from a couple of years ago, a bit Blondie'esque...

upahill · 06/06/2011 12:09

Almost anything done by anyone is better than Bob Dylan doing his own stuff!!! As much as I like Bob Dylan's songs he ain't much of a singer.

A better than the original for me (apart fro the one's I mentioned earlier) are

Twist and Shout. The Beatles version is way better than the original.

Louie Louie by Motorhead rather than the kingsmen
Gloria done by Patti Smith.

Lemonheads - Luca
The Fall -Victoria
The Fall - White Lightning
