Hmm, interesting and bizarre sounding theory. Satanism in music.

I randomly stumbled across someone discussing this on here so I did alot of research and the findings have actually been quite shocking, it would seem tha a lot of celebs beyonce rhianna and jay z all seem to openly worship, from their hand gestures to what they wear etc.

I am fully aware this sounds totally bizarre and I assure you I am not insane, but have a Google and post your feed back. (can't do links as I'm on mobile) :)

LetThereBeRock, it's a large world full of people with differing views. Some people actually believed that we had "only 50 days left to save the planet". I didn't find that worrying, I expected it.

pinkfluffyprincess · 19/03/2011 20:08

Ha ha cornsilk I put loon in quotation marks at first, then I was called it. Yet you pick up on what I say. Hmm. Friends I wonder?

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 19/03/2011 20:09

They do it to sell more records.

Any publicity is better than no publicity at all.

David Bowie told the world he was gay to make sure everyone was talking about him and it worked.

John Lennon did the whole "bigger than Jesus" thing to the same effect.

KISS played up to the "satanic" stories because they knew that what was forbidden was more desirable.

claig · 19/03/2011 20:09

babyheave, I agree you're not daft, you sound very clever.

pinkfluffyprincess · 19/03/2011 20:10

So you are basically denying there are Satanic images in the videos then? Why? They are there, so why?

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2011 20:11

Again, could those who believe in this please provide me with some examples?

NormanTebbit · 19/03/2011 20:11

Pink fluffy mummy

Yes you can take the view that meanings of objects are constructed by society - but don't you see that, if you take this perspective, than you and others are attaching certain meanings to the gestures - Jay Z and Beyonce may be using gestures to signify 'cool,' to foster a group identity which is not understood by those outside the group. You are constructing your own meaning - they are constructing theirs.

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2011 20:12

'LetThereBeRock, it's a large world full of people with differing views. Some people actually believed that we had "only 50 days left to save the planet". I didn't find that worrying, I expected it.'

A lack of rationality is not something to be celebrated or advertised. I'm sure we all have our irrational beliefs, but they're not something we should proudly embrace.

claig · 19/03/2011 20:12

ShinyMoon, it is more than using shock tactics to sell records. Some artists have said things which led to their recording contracts being cancelled. There are lots of ways of shocking, but they would not all be allowed.

claig · 19/03/2011 20:14

But there is no lack of rationality. The signals are evident "in plain sight". We are discussing why they are used and what they signify?

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2011 20:14

There are people out there who genuinely believe that if you smash a mirror,or put shoes on a table that you'll have a run of bad luck.Should I also respect their deluded beliefs?

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2011 20:15

See what Shiny said.

And I'm still waiting on my examples.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 19/03/2011 20:15

Look... (not entirely sure why I'm still on this thread, prob'ly cause DH is watching the rugby and monopolising the TV)

I have two necklaces with an ankh on them. If I stood in front of a bright light with my arms out to the side, I'd look like an ankh. It doesn't mean I'm an ancient Egyptian. (It actually means I'm a worshipper of Neil Gaiman, but that's neither here nor there Smile)

If we assume for one mad moment that the baphomet pose is just a Jesus-in-a-naan-bread trick of the mind, then really that's left is a goat's head ring, which could be a symbol of the Wild West, of the band Slayer, of a tasty curry... not really a huge concerted effort to convert today's youth to Satanism, no?

And WTF with these 'hand signals'? Everyone knows the Dio 'horns'sign is the devil sign, not this new-fangled diamond shit. Honestly, in my day...

pinkfluffyprincess · 19/03/2011 20:15

Yes, meanings are attached to symbols by people. What I'm saying is they must think they are using these symbols to bring others round to their way of thinking. Again, everyone knows what a goats head signifies, or has been constructed to signify. That's why I don't buy the fashion argument, these symbols are shared, in the same way the symbol of the cross is shared, IYSWIM

AttillaTheMum · 19/03/2011 20:16

I find the Jack Black 'satanist's prayer' video horrible. I wouldn't want my DD watching it.

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2011 20:16

And what Norman said.

pinkfluffyprincess · 19/03/2011 20:17

You want examples of what Satan has done worse than what God has done? It's irrelevant. I'm describing what I think Beyonce et al believe, from the symbols they are flashing to us.

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2011 20:19

I make the sign of the horns at rock and metal concerts. It doesn't mean that I worship Satan,or that I'm trying to recruit my fellow gig goers to the dark side.

It was originally,or so I believe, used to ward off evil.It can have several meanings, so why presume that it's always used as a symbol of Satan?

claig · 19/03/2011 20:19

TheHeathen, they are making the sign of the devil in many videos and concerts. It has become widespread. No big deal? Just a hand signal? No latent meaning behind it?

What if they started making Nazi salute hand signals? Would it be just the same for you?

claig · 19/03/2011 20:20

Godwin's Law

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2011 20:21

And again,so what if it is used as a symbol of Satan by some? What harm will it do?

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 19/03/2011 20:21

But the clever (and therefore successful) artists don't go to those extremes because it would defeat the object. They can't sell records if they are stupid enough to get dropped by their record labels and for the majority of those in the music business, it's all about the fame and fortune.

What was shocking in the 50's became less so in the 60's and so on until we get to today. However the basic principle is the same - get talked about, get famous, get rich.

Anyway, "satanic" images are only shocking and threatening to those who believe in it. The rest of us, enjoy the music and get on with our lives.

For some reason I've just been reminded of that woman who tried to ban Harry Potter in schools in the US because that encouraged satanism too. Somehow she missed the whole "Good vs Evil" "Love conquers all" messages in the books and only saw the death eaters.

pinkfluffyprincess · 19/03/2011 20:22

All those people at Jay Z's concert were doing the signals. They are not devil worshippers, but Jay Z is. I've no doubt of it. He knows full well what he's doing

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2011 20:22

Did you just invoke Godwin's Law on yourself,Claig?Grin

claig · 19/03/2011 20:22

'I find the Jack Black 'satanist's prayer' video horrible. I wouldn't want my DD watching it.'

It's deliberate, they are taking the piss in our faces, and so many people don't even realise it and think it's all good fun. It shows how much the conditioning and drip drip technique has succeeded.
