Beautiful, melancholic, melodious, impressive

Ok, I have searched other threads but have not found exactly what I am after. I like stuff that matches the description above. Nothing too "stripped bare", one man and a guitar would not do! Has to make your spine tingle and make you cry, but be loud enough too. Any ideas as I want to expand my ipod selection?

the church- under the milkyway tonight
porcupine tree- trains
the smiths - please, please, please
echo and the bunnymen- killing moon
the killers- tranquilize
INXS- never tear us apart (makes me cry, is melodic, melancholic...)

I see you have muse already- covers all bases.

elgar cello concerto

Epic is a good word! I would have got what you meant straight away if you'd said that before Xmas Grin

Evanescence are good. Also, it's a bit I know but My Chemical Romance. Their first/second album stuff is more screamy whereas the new is more theatrical. Although their first album has some quite different stuff on it. Lots of energy!

Dragonforce are fun to listen to. The lyrics are a bit swords-and-sorcery-esque but they have insane, and many, guitarists and keyboard players.

Paramore are good too.

Alter Bridge?

dreamylady · 05/12/2010 01:17

no one has mentioned Interpol

and for quieter moments, if you like harmonies

dreamylady · 05/12/2010 01:21

and another one by Low
but you need to listen to it on a good stereo!

dreamylady · 05/12/2010 01:21

oops bit tipsy Wink

aristomache · 05/12/2010 01:22

time to say goodbye andrea bocelli. And I'm not usually one for that type of music, but it is so beautiful and does make you cry!

lovelyopaque · 05/12/2010 09:03

Thank you so much for these! I should have said "epic" straight away. Very remiss of me Xmas Grin. Love much Elgar! Also love Evanescence! Must look into Paramore. Agree on Andrea Bocelli song. Have that already. Will look at Low - harmonies very important. This is fabulous everyone, I'm excited to research!

Swanker - Killing Moon is one of the best! Have it but not on ipod, can do that today.

I know it's old, but would fit the bill? (If you like Evanescence)
I loved that whole album, there are some great stirring, chilling songs on it.

lovelyopaque · 05/12/2010 09:27

Yes it would! Thanks

I love this too

but it's not quite 'beautiful'
Unprune · 05/12/2010 09:38

Also the line 'I'll make you lick my injuries' - genius line about a controlling abusive relationship - is a bit more than 'melancholic' Shock

purepurple · 05/12/2010 09:45

You need

one of the most beautiful songs ever written
purepurple · 05/12/2010 09:50

Op, see you like Evanessence and Muse, so do I.
You might also want to try these oldies
Bauhaus
Sisters of Mercy
Everything But the Girl
The Mission
Siousxie and the Banshees
The Cure
all fit the bill

Unprune · 05/12/2010 09:55

This Mortal Coil! God I loved them.....

DuelingFanjo · 05/12/2010 09:56

Guillemots.

Only one track, but "That'll Do" by Peter Gabriel and The Black Dyke Band. Sounds nuts until you listen too it.

LostArt · 05/12/2010 10:07
can certainly do melancholy.
lovelyopaque · 05/12/2010 10:09

Used to love the Cocteau Twins and the Mission!

Love quite a lot of Led Zeppelin too. Kashmir fits the bill for me too.

Love hurts by Gram Parsons. Actually, you might like quite a lot of Gram Parsons. He did this song with EmmyLou Harris and it is spine tingling.

It's here, starts quietly but pump up the volume

lovelyopaque · 05/12/2010 10:32

Actually did quite like that, didn't think I would. You are all great!
