This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tried and tested the new Green Cola drink. This product test was open to all UK MNers who have at least one child. Selected testers received 4x330ml cans to try out.

Here is what Green Cola have to say: “Green Cola is a healthier AND tastier cola from an independent, British company. Why ‘Green’ Cola? Well, as well as having zero sugar and therefore no calories, we are 3 times green: 1) sweetened with natural Stevia from the green Stevia plant , 2) our caffeine is fully natural and extracted from green coffee beans, and 3) as a small, family company, we work hard to minimise our impact on the environment in everything we do.

Green Cola isn’t just healthier however, it also tastes even better than the leading no calorie brands – So you don’t have to sacrifice taste for health, making it an easy switch to make for you and your family.

We’re proud to be supporting Change4Life, Public Health England’s campaign to reduce childhood obesity through encouraging families to cut back on sugar by making simple swaps to healthier products – we share the Change4Life mission to offer healthier choices without compromising on taste!”

Testers please answer the questions below:
- What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
- How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
- What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
- To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
- Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
- How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

Selected testers will be required to leave feedback on a thread on Mumsnet and complete a short survey. All who do so will be entered into a prize draw where 3 MNers will win a £100 voucher each of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

I would describe as a cheap and nasty alternative to coke

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

We do try to look for drinks with as little additives as possible

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

1/2 of my family are already vegetarian so always looking for new options

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

I would not be interested in anything else at the moment as I really did not enjoy the drink at all

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

My family tend to go on taste

mummygardyne · 11/05/2019 18:36

This is the 2nd review, as others have now tasted:-

Husband and youngest daughter both really like the taste and have to agree with other reviews the packaging is nice and really stands out.

Husband and YD both felt that it tasted like regular diet coke, I felt it was slightly sweeter, but husband stated he would rather drink the Green cola as it had not Aspartame in it and would happily do so.

I think we would be interested in trying other varieties from the brand, I would like lemon and caffeine free, as I tend to drink Caffeine free diet coke.-

To us as a family, being ethical and sustainable is not a top priority, but if we like something that fits that description we are happy to use.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

It is incredibly important but it also needs to be affordable to the masses otherwise there’s no point as the public will not buy in to it.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I like the idea of a healthy alternative and the fact ingredients will be healthy for my body. Sadly it lacked in flavour. Was not as fizzy as normal diet coke. I found it really diluted in flavour. However, you could not taste the Sweetener as much which is a positive.

Testers please answer the questions below:

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

We didn't really like the taste unfortunately although I really am drawn to the stevia ingredient rather than sweetners. I will always try healthier alternatives

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

Like diet coke but healthier for you

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

I prefer sugar free and ideally stevia for sweetness

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

We are trying to eat more vegetarian options and we give most alternatives a go at least once.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

We don't tend to buy flavoured cola/caffeine free so they wouldn't be for us

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

Very important to have variety of drinks which don't come from the big corporations, we as a family prefer to support smaller independent/ethical companies where possible

FriendlyLlama · 12/05/2019 01:48

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
It tasted very similar to normal Coca Cola or Pepsi which is good considering it's a much healthier and better alternative. I really liked the design of the can, it immediately grabs your attention and makes it stand out visually from similar drinks. I really love the use of natural sweetener and caffeine.

How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
Green Cola is a new healthier and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional coke drinks like Coca Cola or Pepsi.

What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
I look at a) sugar content, b) if the sweeteners are artificial or not c) calorie content.

To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
I'm not vegan or vegetarian and neither is anyone in my family but we do try and eat healthier even more so than before so being able to switch to a healthier and better for the planet drink like Green Cola is an easy and clear choice.

Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
I really enjoy all the different fruit flavours that traditional brands like Coca Cola or Pepsi have been putting out so I'd definitely be interested in Green Cola offering a few options too (maybe some limited edition ones throughout the year?). I'd be open to any fruits, but maybe green apple would be a good choice and fit in well with your brand.

How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
I definitely love to support independent companies rather than the huge corporations that at the end of the day value profits and keeping their shareholders happy above all else like our health, how they treat their workers or the environment so I think it's vital for us to have as much of these smaller companies as possible and I'm definitely looking forward to replacing Coca Cola and Pepsi with Green Cola.

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

A healthier version of cola, that still tastes good

That it tastes nice and that it doesn't have aspartame in it as I have heard that it is not good for you at all.

To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

This doesn't matter to us as we are not vegan nor vegetarian but will be good to know I can get these if we have my sister in law to visit who is vegan

Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Cherry Please! And caffeine free would be good too so I could drink it in the evening which I try to avoid nowadays due to caffeine keeping me awake

How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

I like that it is from a UK Company and that it is ethical too, Always good to know

MummyVaughan13 · 12/05/2019 09:10

-What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I found it enjoyable, it definitely tasted different to other diet cokes I've tried. The fact it's diet and doesn't contain aspartame makes it even better. I did however find it very fizzy compared to others and found I couldn't finish a whole one.

Diet coke without all the nasty bits.

-What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
How the product tastes and that it doesn't contain aspartame.

It's not a major concern of ours

-Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Yes, I'd be very interested in tasting a flavoured version

-How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Its always good to feel you're adding to a better world but it's really not my main concern when buying soft drinks.

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I personally was expecting an awful taste for this green cola but was pleasantly surprise by the taste. To be honest if normal cola is on offer to me as well as green cola I would opt for normal cola as taste wise I prefer it more.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

It is a healthier option if cutting down sugar intake in normal coke is what you are looking for but taste may not to everyone!

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Although how much healthier to me is a strong factor but taste is equally as important. I would choose taste over all factor.

Tried with husband and sad to say he doesn’t like the taste of green cola. I have vegan/vegetarian friends so would recommend to them.

Maybe tempted by lemon.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies

It is important for consumers to have a wider choice and to choose what suit them best.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

When it arrived, just from the packaging I though it was the original coca cola gone healthy! It was actually my husband who noticed it was cola.
My husband who is a more fussy coke drinker really liked it & would definitely swap to it & recommend it. My son & daughter both really liked it. I, on the otherhand didn't dislike it but I didn't love it. The taste was a bit strange. However I think as the health benefits over rule I could see myself changing my tastes to drink this when we are having a treat or need a sweet hit!

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

Healthier coke!

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Less sugar. Always.

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

Not looking at going vegan. Would happily become vegetarian.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

My daughter particularly would love all cherry, lemon, mango etc. I just prefer coke.

If I am being completely honest it isn't totally important to me but it is nice!

- What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I'm an absolute fiend for Diet Coke, so I was interested to try Green Cola to see if it would still hit the spot. I thought the taste was softer - but in a good way. It also didn't feel quite as fizzy, but this wasn't a negative.
I think I could make the switch from Diet Coke to Green Cola & the changes I noticed would be easy to get used to when drinking Green Cola longer-term.
- How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A healthy alternative to other carbonated drinks with no sugar & no aspartame.
- What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Something refreshing, which feels like a treat - but doesn't contain sugar & ideally no artificial sweeteners.
- To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
Somewhat.
- Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Caffeine free would be wonderful. I'd also love to see a cherry version.
- How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Really important - we ALL need to making sustainable choices wherever we can - manufacturers of course, but also us as consumers.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

Very good. Children thought it indistinguishable from normal cola. (We don't drink it a lot, so maybe not the best judges) I liked the taste a lot. Was rather fizzy - but that is how it should be. Just on the right edge between sharp and sweet. Really like the fact it had better ingredients with no compromise on taste.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

Coke with less artificial ingredients, using one of the more fashionable natural sweeteners.

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Taste, lack of chemicals

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

We are looking to switch to more vegan and veggie options.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

I would be very interested. We also like the new San Pellegrino flavours - more unusual, like pomegranate, or mint and lime, etc. Don't mind about caffeine personally.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

We should all be becoming more ethical and sustainable. Sits rather awkwardly with capitalism though. I like it when a 1000 flowers bloom - not sure how green cola can align with that though. I think it just is and has to be multinational big business. It should do what it can to improve the world - or destroy it less.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I thought it was slightly sweeter than regular cola and quite flat but it didnt feel much different to other cola drinks. I didnt really like anything that much.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

Tastes the same as other colas.

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

That it feels healthier in some sense, less sugar, more authentic.

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

We are not at all.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

It is not something that would interest me.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

I am sure it is very important to follow suit like other brands and show the effort to encourage awareness to others by 'doing the right thing', but it's not something that affects whether i buy a product or not.

JulesJules · 13/05/2019 15:21

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I like the concept but I only quite like the taste. I can see it is a healthier alternative to coke & diet coke but it didn't taste as good to me. It seemed a bit salty!?!

-How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
I'd say it was pitched as a healthy alternative to other fizzy drinks and was worth trying.

-What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Less / no sugar.

-To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
We don't drink loads of fizzy drinks and often stick to water, orange juice, tea & beer!! As a treat we may have a diet coke. So we don't really feel the need to switch as such as we don't consume that much.

-Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
I like the idea of cheery or raspberry. Caffeine free would make it seem even healthier.

-How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Very important.

Thanks for letting me trial it Smile

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
The taste was reasonably pleasant, but it wasn’t as sweet as I like in a cola. However, the benefits are worth it. I like that it’s sweetened with natural stevia and it is preservative free. It has a nice amount of fizziness which satisfies my craving for a fizzy drink.
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A healthier alternative to cola, sweetened with stevia and sugar/calorie free.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I thought the taste was surprisingly good. We love Coke Zero and I would honestly say Green Cola is nicer; less watery than CZ, and a real strong fizz.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

Worth a try, gives Coke Zero a run for its money!

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Zero or very low calorie

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

Realistically, we aren't

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Yes yes. We love fruity fizzy calorie free drinks. Anything fruity or zingy.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

Honestly, it's not at the moment, but we are trying to make changes to how we consume ethically sound products in our house.
