This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tried and tested the new Green Cola drink. This product test was open to all UK MNers who have at least one child. Selected testers received 4x330ml cans to try out.

Here is what Green Cola have to say: “Green Cola is a healthier AND tastier cola from an independent, British company. Why ‘Green’ Cola? Well, as well as having zero sugar and therefore no calories, we are 3 times green: 1) sweetened with natural Stevia from the green Stevia plant , 2) our caffeine is fully natural and extracted from green coffee beans, and 3) as a small, family company, we work hard to minimise our impact on the environment in everything we do.

Green Cola isn’t just healthier however, it also tastes even better than the leading no calorie brands – So you don’t have to sacrifice taste for health, making it an easy switch to make for you and your family.

We’re proud to be supporting Change4Life, Public Health England’s campaign to reduce childhood obesity through encouraging families to cut back on sugar by making simple swaps to healthier products – we share the Change4Life mission to offer healthier choices without compromising on taste!”

Testers please answer the questions below:
- What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I loved the fact that this is a healthier alternative to other cola’s and could give it guilt free to DD. However I wasn’t keen on the taste, I found it slightly too sweet (perhaps the stevia?) however DD and DH really liked the taste.

We are not vegan or vegetarian however we can see the benefits in these products so may add some of these products to our diet in the future.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Yes we would like caffeine free and different flavours would be a bonus.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent company’s

Vital! As we are so aware of the environment now.

Testers please answer the questions below:

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I quite enjoyed it. It tasted like coke zero, was less fizzy which I enjoyed and liked the less additives.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

A bit like coke zero

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Less sugar, healthier sweeteners

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

Not really bothered by vegan credentials

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Definitely flavoured, we've just tried raspberry pepsi which we really enjoyed.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

I'm more attracted by the UK independent company than the ethics. I do like that it's more ethical than others but not a major decider.

Salukigirl · 10/05/2019 12:14

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I like that it doesn’t contain aspartame but I wasn’t really sold on the taste. It tasted less sharp and more sugary, more like regular coke where I prefer Pepsi Max or Diet Coke.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A good alternative to coke, especially if you prefer your cola sweeter.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Zero calories, price, brand.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
Not particularly but I may buy it if it is on special offer.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Caffeine free definitely. I don’t buy other flavoured versions.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
It’s a great idea.
TwirlyWitch · 10/05/2019 12:24
  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I loved the idea of it being healthier especially using natural stevia instead of aspartame but unfortunately it tastes really bad, lacking flavour with a nasty bitter aftertaste. Every family member that tried it disliked it. We regularly drink karma cola which is much better.
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
Sadly- A poor alternative to the real thing.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
No aspartame/artificial sweeteners
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

As a vegetarian myself I have always considered all cokes/Pepsi’s as vegan/vegetarian friendly?

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Not unless the flavour was better. Or totally masked the weird aftertaste.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

It’s a wonderful idea- that I would happily support if the product was decent and the family liked it.

36degrees · 10/05/2019 12:25

- What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I like the idea of a green cola, and using natural products like Stevia to cut down on both sugar/corn syrup and artificial sweeteners like aspartame.
In terms of what my family would usually buy, I would consider it better tasting than any type of pepsi and diet coke, but I would prefer coke zero to this.

It was very fizzy at first, and led to LOTS of burping and associated hilarity, but then went flat pretty quickly.

There was an aftertaste that was different. Not good, not bad, not sweet, not chemically, can't really place it, but definitely there.
It was really good to have it in cans and not plastic bottles. We prefer aluminium and glass alternatives to plastic containers wherever feasible, both for recycling purposes but also because I personally prefer the taste out of glass or cans - I think they get more cold as well (they probably don't but that's how I experience it).
I hadn't realised properly until I read this thread, but I also like that it's a British company and would like to hear more from the brand about reduced food miles, local ingredients, where the water comes from etc.

- How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
Tastes almost as good as coke but much kinder to your insides.

- What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Taste
Sugar
Parent company/ethics

- To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
Not at all. It wouldn't cross my mind to even think of it as vegetarian or vegan.

- Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
PUT ALMOND IN IT - there are literally no alternatives to Dr Pepper out there, let alone a greener, kinder version, you could make a mint on it. I am willing to exchange this brilliant idea for a lifetime supply, you're welcome.

- How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Very important. I run a small business which is UK-based and sustainable and the more of us there are, the better for consumers and business it is for all of us.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I was pleasantly surprised, the taste was great and I’ve been trying to switch my teenagers from calorie filled energy drinks to a healthier alternative. They hate the saccharine taste of diet drinks but found green cola an acceptable alternative
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family? A healthier drink that doesn’t have the nasty saccharine taste.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Firstly that they taste great. I can buy healthy drinks but if they don’t taste good they’re not worth buying.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola? Somewhat
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free? Definitely cherry or lemon would be great
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies? So important we all need to be aware

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I thought the branding was good. Its instantly recognisable as a cola type product. I thought the taste was on a par with other zero sugar colas. Certainly no worse - given that it is supposed to be healthier this would give it the edge for me.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A healthier alternative to mainline cola
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Low sugar is the main one, but also the number of artificial additives and flavours
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
We are certainly trying to eat less meat, but I don't find drinks to be a problem area when trying to switch to vegan/vegetarian anyway.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Personally I am not keen on cola that has extra weird flavours. I would be interested in something like a ginger beer or a bitter lemon that was well made though, along the same environmental/ethical principles.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Yes, this is becoming increasingly important to me as I get older, and awareness of environmental issues grows. This would certainly be a selling point for me with any product.
sjonlegs · 10/05/2019 13:14

-What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
Fizzy drinks of this nature are a real treat to me. I really liked this drink - I found it cleaner, more refreshing and less sweet than its counterparts.

-How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
An alternative to diet coke and all the other sugar free coke and cola options. I wouldn't need to describe it to my family though - as we shared a can for a taste test and then they fought over the remaining cans - I think it was a definite hit!

-What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Sugar content, calories, taste

-To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
My daughter is a lazy vegetarian and we've definitely cut down a lot of late. I always look for vegetarian and vegan options - so I'd definitely look to changing to this product.

-Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Yes, like the idea of cherry or lemon flavour to make it tastier

-How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
I would normally look to being ethical and sustainable where possible in general, though fizzy drinks aren't necessarily a priority.

Em1151 · 10/05/2019 13:34
  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I liked the fact it was more natural and didnt have aspartame in it. The taste was ok, I didn’t hate or love it and I think I could get used to it over my beloved Diet Coke! I did feel it left my teeth with a weird feeling afterwards

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

Healthier with a reasonable coke flavour.

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Taste, cost and sustainability

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

I didn’t know other Coke brands weren’t vegetarian? We are pescatarian as a family and not looking to go vegan

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Possibly caffeine free but don’t like flavoured colas anyway

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

Very important and plastic free and as eco as possible is very important to us atm

desperatehousewife21 · 10/05/2019 14:02
  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I really liked the green cola, it tasted almost the same as the regular version and really like that it is a much healthier option.
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
It’s a healthier version of Coca Cola with no sugar and no preservatives.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
I always try to go for sugar free where I can but on the whole we don’t drink a lot of soft drinks.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
I’d be really happy to switch to this version but my husband maybe not so much!
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Definitely cherry!
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
It’s really important to have ethically sourced products where possible these days.
Andreab8321 · 10/05/2019 14:23

Really liked this cola, even though both my kids ughed at the bottle, even they liked it, it is as close to normal coke as it could possibly be, very very impressed. I would definitely buy it if the price as reasonable, and definitely would be up for other varieties.

HarryBob · 10/05/2019 14:31

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

It was very fizzy which was good, however I found it did not have a lot of flavour - was more like sweetened fizzy water than cola

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

A healthier alternative to other colas, but not as flavourful

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

A diet option which is as close to the full sugar version of the drink in flavour as possible. If the diet version does not taste as good as a full sugar version I would rather have the full sugar drink in moderation as a treat.

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

We use quite a few vegetarian or vegan alternates such as oat or nut milks however had not considered the need to change soft drinks

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Cherry could be nice. I have enjoyed other cola brand versions of both Lime and Cinnamon so would be interested to try Green Cola versions of these.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

It is definitely important to me to support UK independent companies, I also find we are considering sustainability more when making food and drink choices as a family these days

burwellmum · 10/05/2019 14:37
  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I didn't like the taste, my 14 year old did but then he doesn't really like Coke that much. By contrast I quite liked the 'look' but he thought they needed to come up with a totally different marketing concept!

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

Not very pleasant but worthy.

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

We just drink them rarely apart from fruit juice.

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

Not at all.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

No

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

It is important but soft drinks aren't my priority - I'd rather avoid completely.

Deebeedoo · 10/05/2019 14:53

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
Mixed reactions in this house. Youngest enjoyed it. Eldest and husband thought it tasted horrid and only managed a few sips each. I thought it was okay but was a bit disappointed - it almost tasted like cheap (flat) cola. Perception in terms of family health was positive, in regards to the ingredients but no use of they wouldn't touch it. Packaging was very like the major brands but the taste was not. Liked the premise but not a huge fan overall.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A healthier alternative to the major brands without the nasties in it.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
How it fits into lifestyle. Taste vs health. Price and availability.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
Not looking to switch but do use some as we like them eg quorn crispy nuggets instead of chicken dippers. Willing to try but not actively seeking.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Previously found that flavored variety drinks tasted very synthetic. If the flavoring were natural that might be a good alternative. Lemon or line would be refreshing.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Its important that people have the option so they are not forced to choose between ethics and meeting a family need.
Jmbarr · 10/05/2019 15:07
  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I found that Green Cola had slightly less depth of flavour than full-fat Coca-Cola, but nonetheless it hit the spot in terms of being a refreshing drink and I would choose it over full-fat Coke due to its lower calorie content. I think if I were more concerned about flavour I'd go for full-fat, but when I drink fizzy drinks it's more for refreshment. I'm neutral on 'better ingredients', but note that it is aspartame-free, which may be of interest to some. The can is attractive and not skewed towards any particular gender.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family? A refreshing drink with slightly less flavour than full-fat Coke but considerably healthier.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks? Natural flavourings, decent taste and that refreshing feeling.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola? We're not looking to switch, but if a product happens to be healthy and veggie/vegan then so be it.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free? Lemon would be lovely! Caffeine free too, possibly.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

It is very important to have these, given the volume that is consumed in the UK and beyond. Price is a concern, though - some are expensive but not value for money.

monkey1978 · 10/05/2019 15:26

My overall perception is really positive, I really enjoy coke, but do not like the idea of diet coke with aspartame in it so for me this is a great product. I did like the taste, not as much as coke but much more than diet coke. I do like the idea of it being an overall healthier alternative with natural ingredients. I like the fact it is made from Stevia instead.
I would describe it to friends and family as a better, healthier option to diet coke.
The most important factor for me when selecting a healthier option is taste and the fact it doesnt have aspartame in it. I would rather not drink diet coke for this reason so this is great for me.
I am very much looking for healthier alternatives for me and my family.
I do like coke as a brand, I enjoy cherry coke, and when I was pregnant I drank caffeine free but I dont think I like the idea of lemon coke.
The fact that products are ethical and sustainable is becoming much more important to me.

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

I'm OK about the ingredient, more healthy of the coca cola, but I'm afraid the taste it to chemical for me, to fake

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

It is really like diet cola, but a cheap version of it and an healthy version too

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Natural ingredients, so to have herbs is the best.

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

Not yet, we really don't like the taste.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

If they are able to remove the chemical taste from it, yes something fruity will be nice (peach, apple, watermelon..)

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

It is really a good thing to be honest, but unfortunately the taste is to far away from the "original" coca coal diet/zero, i have no pleasure to drink it :(

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

Both DS and I liked it. We did a blind testing against Coke Zero and PepsiMax and Green Cola came out on top.
It’s good to avoid artificial sweeteners and the phosphoric acid (bad for your bone density and teeth)

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
Refreshing and more natural alternative

We all need to be moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Will there be the option of buying larger glass bottles on a return scheme a la 1970’s?

What is your overall perception of Green Cola?

I got 9 people to try this, 5 of these were 12 year old boys. Everybody enjoyed the taste, 2 of the boys couldn't really tell the difference. One of the adult testers said that she thought that it wasn't as fizzy as regular cola but she enjoyed it more because of that. I enjoyed it I thought it tasted "cleaner" odd word to use I know but I can't think of any other way of putting it. I liked the natural ingredients, however I don't drink caffeine normally so I would be interested in a caffeine free version. I was pleased that there was no Aspartame in it. What I liked most was that the ingredients were natural.

How would you describe Green Cola to your friends?

Great tasting healthy alternative.

To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan/vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

We are increasingly looking at vegetarian options and we will often have a week of meals with no meat. There are some delicious vegetarian/vegan alternatives out there.

Would you be interested in other varieties?

Definitely...lemon, cherry, caffeine free to name but a few.

How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks?

It is very important, money isn't everything and we do not have finite resources. By purchasing from Green Cola and UK independant companies we are helping our own economy and the employment that it creates.

Similar to Coke Zero
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Nope, Coke should taste of Coke, not Mango, Cherry or whatever - Coke is the flavour
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

Thanks for letting us take part, Green Cola was very well received and everybody is demanding more!

Here is my more detailed feedback:
What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
Green Cola tastes great, which is the most important thing. Even better that it is healthier than your regular Coke!

How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A tasty alternative to normal Coke.

What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
That the taste is not compromised.

To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
Most if not all drinks we consume (except for milk) are vegetarian or vegan anyway - aren’t they??

Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Definitely caffeine free!

How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
It is becoming more important for us. The main family drink is tap water now, but we all love Coke as a treat.

Could you please tell us where Green Cola is stocked? We usually shop at Sainsburys and couldn’t find it there.
