This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tried and tested the new Green Cola drink. This product test was open to all UK MNers who have at least one child. Selected testers received 4x330ml cans to try out.

Here is what Green Cola have to say: “Green Cola is a healthier AND tastier cola from an independent, British company. Why ‘Green’ Cola? Well, as well as having zero sugar and therefore no calories, we are 3 times green: 1) sweetened with natural Stevia from the green Stevia plant , 2) our caffeine is fully natural and extracted from green coffee beans, and 3) as a small, family company, we work hard to minimise our impact on the environment in everything we do.

Green Cola isn’t just healthier however, it also tastes even better than the leading no calorie brands – So you don’t have to sacrifice taste for health, making it an easy switch to make for you and your family.

We’re proud to be supporting Change4Life, Public Health England’s campaign to reduce childhood obesity through encouraging families to cut back on sugar by making simple swaps to healthier products – we share the Change4Life mission to offer healthier choices without compromising on taste!”

Testers please answer the questions below:
- What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
- How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
- What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
- To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
- Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
- How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

Selected testers will be required to leave feedback on a thread on Mumsnet and complete a short survey. All who do so will be entered into a prize draw where 3 MNers will win a £100 voucher each of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I like that it’s contains no aspartame but it was a little sweet for my taste. I had Diet Coke in the fridge so we done a blind taste, DH and 3 out of 4 DC’s preferred green cola.
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A more natural alternative to Diet Coke/Coke Zero.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
It has to be sugar-free.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
Myself and DH have recently turned vegetarian after giving it up for lent, and are trying to reduce our dairy intake so it’s something to consider. Tbh I assumed most soft drinks were suitable for vegans, a quick google search tells me lilt and Kia Ora aren’t, thankfully we don’t buy them anyway!
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Definitely cherry!
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Absolutely important, I much prefer to support more ethical and sustainable choices as well as independent companies, though the price doesn’t always make it easily possible.
fishnships · 10/05/2019 18:31

Overall perception was good; subtle notes of citrus and berries gave it a smoother flavour. I consider it a healthier alternative and like fact that it has more natural ingredients most.
I'd describe it as similar to diet coke, but healthier and tastes a bit nicer.
Most important factors when choosing healthy soft drinks are: No artificial additives if possible, sugar-free or low sugar, price and whether the company is ethical.
As a family we are not actively looking to switch to vegan/veggie alternatives although since Veganuary I have noticed that some very good options are now available and will choose them when available.
No, I would not be interested in other varieties (with the exception of caffeine free). There are so many different soft drinks available so I think it would be preferable for the company to focus on this one type. It is important to me to make ethical choices and I feel that the top brand Coke has saturated the market for too long. I believe this Green Cola could be a great alternative and I would love to see it become widely available.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients?
I haven’t had coke or it’s substitutes for about a year, it tasted pretty much how i remember coke 😁 DS really liked it.

Which elements did you like the most?

I like the more “natural” element of the ingredients.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
More coke zero than diet coke but very pleasant
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Something non fattening and without aspartame for me, something not too sugary for ds

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

More so now since I started to eat more healthily/less lazily. now more open to vegan products but unlikely to purchase “ready made” vegan or change totally.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Nope, never been keen on the flavoured styles.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

I love innovative and sustainable British products, why shouldn’t we produce for ourselves 😁. I like to purchase locally and from within the uk. Would encourage me to try it out if nothing else.

I will be honest, ds liked it and am happy to repurchase for him and for guests :) however i came into the trial having not drunk any coke products for over a year. I probably won’t have it again, i think my tastebuds have changed and I find it tasty but not something i would drink regularly. I would say this about any soft drink though and it isn’t specific to green cola. I really hope they do well and will be recommending to friends and family as a british alternative.

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

Me, dh and dd tasted the new cola. Dh and DD didn't know it was different to normal - at home we normally have caffeine free Diet Coke. Neither noticed a different, or commented on it. I did tell them afterwards and both were pleasantly surprised.
We all thought it was much nicer than Pepsi and cheaper cola brands.

-How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

An alternative to Diet Coke.

What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Ingredients, taste, cost, availability

To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

Not really. I don't eat meal, but dh and dd do. We do all enjoy some meat free days.

-Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Caffeine free - possibly yes, as I find too much caffeine makes my heart go faster more.
DD would like a cherry cola version.

How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

Its good mohave them as alternatives, though they do need to be more competitively priced and more easily available.

macblank · 10/05/2019 19:08

I bet you thought it was gonna be green, didn't ya!

Ever found an opened bottle of cola? Tasted ok, but despite the fizz tastes old n flat? Welcome to Green Cola.

That honestly is what I thought of the taste.

Now the idea, the plan, the lack of chemical sweeteners... 10 out of 10
The taste... Sorry but has to be 6 out of 10 ... Why? Well as I said above, to me, it tastes like an old coke. It was OK, but I'm not gonna pay that much for ok, ok!

Now others may find it perfection, but not me.

A friend of mine was happy as it has no pheno(not sure of the spelling) as he is allergic to it, but as a diabetic, he struggles to find diet fizzy drinks. He said "it's ok, but not as crisp tasting a fresh branded coke" I'd buy it as I can have a cold fizzy.

Now it's far far better than the cola mix you get in a Soda Stream©️

I'd happily test again if you come up with flavoured versions ... Cherry, orange, vanilla.

It wasn't nasty, if it's all a friend had to drink, I'd drink it.

Oops, trust me to go rushing in... Here is the formal view, with answering the questions....

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients?

It might me healthier, with better ingredients, but it lacks a crisp fresh cola taste.

Which elements did you like the most?

No phenylalanine. Full stop!

-How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

Better tasting than a Soda-Stream©️ syrup, not peppery like cheap coke, but like an almost flat coke.

-What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Zero sugar, zero calories, GREAT TASTE.

-To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

NOPE!

-Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

send me some and I'll try it.

-How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies

It's good to have the option, but taste HAS to improve. Some may not care so long as not boiled cabbage water, or crushed carrot n grass, but I do care about taste, and this isn't there ... YET.

I THINK ITS FANTASTIC THAT THIS IS AN INDEPENDENT BRITISH COMPANY. just change something, cos it's not working.

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most? We all really liked it, I found it very similar to normal 'cola' taste wise although my hubby said it was quite fruity. I may have enjoyed it more knowing that it was a healthy alternative!

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family? A great tasting coke au natural!
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks? No sugar and no aspartame but still with a great taste.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola? I wouldn't say that we are going out of our way to switch but now that we have tasted this I would definitely choose and buy this over other varieties.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free? Cherry definitely, one of our favourites flavours. I also would like to try caffeine free as I suffer from migraines.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies? Really important, especially from UK independent companies.
tackyprincess · 10/05/2019 20:35
  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
Both myself and my children really liked the design of the can. Looked close enough to Coca-Cola for them to think it was the same just in a funky can. My son liked the cola but said it was a bit watery. I thought it tasted like flat Diet Coke. However, my son really enjoyed it and has asked me to buy it again which I would happily do as an alternative to his usual choice.
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A healthier alternative to cola.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Less sugar, fat, e-numbers, caffeine. More natural ingredients while keeping the flavour.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
We don’t make a habit of deliberately switching to vegan/vegetarian options but we do incorporate them into our diets as a conscious effort to reduce our carbon footprint/reduce our food waste.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
I think a favoured version could be a lot nicer. The taste was quite watered down compared to my usual cola but if it had a flavour then this would mask that.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
I think it is really important. I think the more people buy drinks like Green Cola and ate away from other brands will force the mainstream brands into becoming more ethical and conscious about how they make their products and who/where provides their ingredients
EsmeeMerlin · 10/05/2019 20:36
  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I liked it was healthier and I did not get the stomach ache I get with some fizzy drinks. I liked the taste and so did my eldest son aged 5. We do not usually give him fizzy drinks but I let him try a little of the green cola on a saturday night when we were doing a movie night and he too liked the drink a lot and i did not feel guilty giving him a little.
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
Like a cheaper diet cola drink. It tasted a little like Aldi's diet cola drink they sell.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
The sugar content, No aspartame, the taste and the cost.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
We are not a vegetarian or a vegan family.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Not really, I never buy those other varieties from the other brands.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
I really like it is from a uk company and a more ethical company.

The only negative I do have to say is for a company that says "we work hard to minimise our impact on the environment in everything we do" I was really surprised and unhappy that our 4 cans of green cola arrived in far too much unnecessary plastic bubble wrap. A smaller cardboard box would have been better to use than a large one and plastic bubble wrap. Its why when I saw this quote I am a little dubious about how true it is and how environmentally aware the company really is.

crispsmonster · 10/05/2019 20:46
  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
I like that the ingredients are natural. Overall, the taste is similar to regular Diet Coke/ Pepsi. If you like classic red coke, then this is not a good replacement in terms of taste. But I did like the look of the can, though the design is a little similar to Coca-Cola.
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family? A Diet Coke alternative without the aspartame.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks? Sugar free, low calories and good taste.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola? We would consider lower meat consumption but no plans to switch to vegan or vegetarian alternatives.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free? Yes, I would be interested in a line or lemon based drink like sprite.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Fairly important, ethically sourced ingredients would attract me to a product.

THE AMOUNT OF SUGAR, AND ADDED COLOURS AND FLAVOURS - IF A DRINK HAS THIS - THEN I WILL NOT CONSIDER IT. THE FACT GREEN COLA HAS ONLY NATURAL SUGARS MAKES IT A VERY ATTRACTIVE FOOD SWAP FOR ME.

WE DO HAVE VEGAN DAYS, BUT DO ENJOY, AN ARE HAVING MORE VEGAN FOODSM ALTHOUGH WE STILL HAVE NON VEGAN/VEGETARIAN FOOD GROUPS TOO. HOWEVER WE LOVE THE CONCEPT OF GREEN COLA, AND HAVE ALSO MENTIONED THIS TO OUR FRIENDS WHO HAVE A VEGAN DIET. (IF THERE WAS ANY LEFT WE WOULD HAVE GIVEN THEM A CAN TO TRY0

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients?
As an alternative, I think it’s fantastic. Considering it’s only 2 calories per can, I don’t think you could get any closer to the original taste of Coca Cola.

Which elements did you like the most?
Nutritional elements. We’re on a health kick at the moment so haven’t been buying fizzy drinks but this product is great for low calorie and great taste.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
Coke with the nutritional value of water.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Sugar content and calories.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
We’re not.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Caffeine free.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
Very important - particularly from companies such as Coca Cola.

  • What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?

It was OK. I thought it tasted quite like Coke Zero but my husband thought it tasted completely different. Our son simply said it was tasty. I think the most appealing aspect is that it's sugar free but also doesn't contain aspartame.

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?

I'd describe it as similar to Coke Zero without aspartame as I think that is what would interest them most. To certain friends who are more environmentally aware I would also mention that the company claims to be environmentally friendly where possible.

  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?

Being sugar free.

  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?

I would like to be, but struggle to see how little changes by me could make much difference. My husband is not interested and my son is too young to really understand yet.

  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?

Definitely a caffeine free option.

  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?

It's important that changes are starting to be made but I can't see them having much effect until the largest global companies make it a priority.

What is your overall perception of Green Cola, in terms of taste, as a healthier alternative, better ingredients? Which elements did you like the most?
Probably that it’s sweetened with Stevia, and natural caffeine from green coffee beans!

  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
Nasty free Diet Coke!
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
PRICE.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
Not important to me at all.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
I did have my second can with a lemon slice and it complimented it rather nicely, so lemon would be great! And I am a fan of cherry coke!
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
I do think it’s wonderful to have these ethical and sustainable companies, but for me, I would rather spend £5 on 24 cans than £3.50 on 6....perhaps in the future when I can afford to spend more for a better peace of mind I will. But for now, I would not be prepared to spend any more money on something that boasts these factors.

I like the idea of a green cola and that it has no artificial sweeteners, but both DH and I thought it tasted awful and left a very sweet after taste. However, both DC absolutely loved it and thought it tasted good. They were slightly disappointed it was not green (coloured) though. Grin
  • How would you describe Green Cola to your friends and family?
A healthier diet coke.
  • What are the most important factors you look for when selecting healthier options in soft drinks?
Sugar free and taste.
  • To what extent are you and your family looking to switch to vegan / vegetarian alternatives such as Green Cola?
We are not switching but have made introduced some vegan and vegetarian foods into our diet. I hadn't actually thought about whether soft drinks are suitable for vegan/vegetarians.
  • Would you be interested in other varieties from the Green Cola brand? If so, which? E.g. cherry, lemon, caffeine free?
Not for me or DH but purely for the DC I would be cherry flavoured if it were available.
  • How important is it to have wherever possible more ethical and sustainable soft drinks like Green Cola, as well as those from UK independent companies?
It is very important changes are being made and I do think Green Cola would be popular if/when it goes on sale.
