This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who are reviewing a Sharp Plasmacluster air purifier in their home. All reviewers have at least one child with asthma or dust allergies - this could be mild, moderate or severe. Reviewers will be adding feedback and thoughts over the next three months, in a diary style.

However if you are not a reviewer but are interested in this product please feel free to add comments or ask questions of Sharp or of the reviewers.

Please note: This feedback will only be used by Sharp to inform their development of the product, it will not be treated as a clinical trial.

Sharp have some specific areas they would like you to comment on - you won't be able to add comments/ views on all of these straight away as some are looking at the longer term issues so please do revisit the thread and update your responses over the period of the review.

Please state the age of your child(ren) with asthma / dust allergies as well as the severity of their condition.

Initially, please add your first impressions of the product when it arrived: for example: overall first impressions of the product, was it what you expected? Where have you placed it? How was it to get it set up/ started etc. If you have any queries about the product please either post them here and Sharp will aim to respond or email MNHQ.

Then once you have had the product in your home for awhile, please add your thoughts, comments or experiences regarding the following areas - and the possible effects the air purifier has had for yourself and your child(ren).

Affect on asthma / dust allergy generally
Any reduction in illnesses in the home or affects on winter colds you would normally expect to see
Any reduction in smells around the home
Any reduction or effect on dust in the home - and the effect of this on your child with asthma
Any reduction or effect on mould in and around the home (in troublesome areas such as Bathroom and Kitchen where ventilation might be an issue) - and the effect of this on your child with asthma
Any other comments?

All reviewers who add feedback here will receive a £50 high street gift voucher as a token of thanks for taking part.

Many thanks

MNHQ

I have two DCs.
DS1 is 3.1 and DS2 is 1.8

DS2 has asthma.

I thought it looked very sleek adn shiny when I unwrapped it. I was actually quite worried about damaging it but it is quite robust.

It hasn't been too successful in the boys' room as they press the buttons during the night but we have it on the family room in the evening. It definatly helps with the asthma- you can feel the moisture in the air when it is set to 'humidify'.

I thought it would be very expensive to run but I've been pleasantly surprised.

ihavenewsockson · 30/12/2010 19:40

Sorry- meant to add we are putting in the boys' room after they've fallen asleep and it does help DS2 sleep better.

I've been cleaning all the filters today.

Came back from Christmas away and switched it back on. It smelt a bit musty and the light came on on the top.

Interestingly, ds woke up coughing for the first time in ages this morning (the machine has been switched off since being a bit musty).

Amazing how much dust came out of the cover and mini dust filter thingy.

Haven't de-scaled the humidifier filter yet, it doesn't look too bad.

Anyone else done this yet?

Well I was in hospital for 4 days then Vegas for 6 so it's been off - and since then DD has slept on the floor of the spare room with me in the spare room bed - why is "The Hole" a 12? LOL - there is not a spare inch of floorspace to be had so it's having a holiday.....
I could have done with it on holiday though what with the chest infection......

StarExpat · 01/01/2011 23:04

DS still hasn't had the croup cough or problems breathing since we've had the plasmacluster machine :)
It has been lovely seeing him so happy and healthy for so long. He's 27 months now. This Christmas was amazing because he had anticipation and understood it. So magical! And no worrie over coughs that make breathing next to impossible or asthma in the night Thanks to Sharp!
Thank you, GemmaSharp for making us so happy. :)

ilovesprouts · 04/01/2011 13:18

i dont wanna give mine back its fab!!

Louii · 05/01/2011 21:30

Still going fab for us.
DS had a chest Infection over Xmas so on steroids and antibiotics, previously if he had one, we would be up all night with him choking, coughing and not breathing.
He had a few coughs but slept through and it didn't last as long as usual either.
He had also stopped grinding his teeth all night and snoring.
Love our machine.

bramblebooks · 05/01/2011 21:39

I have to clean the filters soon - must look it up in the book! Ds tells me that his breathing is easier with it in the room.

I am moving it round with me as I clear away dusty decs and it sorts the air out for me.

magnolia74 · 07/01/2011 14:10

Still loving ours, dd's atshma has been much easier to manage.

Supprised at how often i need to fill the water tank....must have very dry air in the house.

Only think i would say is the lights are pretty bright at night....

Louii · 07/01/2011 18:34

The lights can turn down or off magnolia, can't remember how to but tells you in manual.

magnolia74 · 07/01/2011 19:15

Oh lol, will have a look Smile

QODneystones · 07/01/2011 19:17

LOL Magnolia - that got me too - its really simple, near the fan button.

DD is back in her room, I am slightly offended that the orange light sometimes comes on when I merely waft into the room.........

DaftApeth · 07/01/2011 20:31

It's probably your 'wafting' that is causing the problem, QOD Wink

Louii · 07/01/2011 22:02

The novelty of farting to make the light go red has still not lost it's appeal for the male members of my household.

QODneystones · 07/01/2011 22:19

hahahaha

brambleschooks · 07/01/2011 23:13

True

Louii · 12/01/2011 14:16

Everyone still doing well? All good here still thank goodness.

ilovesprouts · 17/01/2011 20:54

i really dont want to give mine bk

GemmaSharp · 28/01/2011 15:47

Hey MNs, hope you are well!

It seems you have all noticed a difference with the Plasmacluster turned on, but what happens when you turn it off? There's 4 weeks left of your trial, so for the next week or 2, it would be great if you could turn the unit off and report back on the thread. I hate to be a pain, but as the saying goes, "you don't know what you've got till it's gone..."

Thank you!

blueberryboybaitonSafari · 31/01/2011 16:14

Gemma - we have been unfortunate enough not to have had ours for the last few nights, All the sockets in DD's room are being replaced so we can't plug it in - the first night wasn't too bad but by last night - night 4 - we are back to the itchy crusty eyes in the morning, coughing and snuffling and It is driving me so mad that we are going to move her into our room tonight so we all get a better night sleep. Please please please can I keep it on :)

magnolia74 · 31/01/2011 16:39

I don't want toturn it off Sad

But I will..... Smile IF

I can keep it Grin

ilovesprouts · 03/02/2011 15:34

gemasharp when do we send the unit back ,

ilovesprouts · 03/02/2011 15:35

my ds2 gets really itchy eyes /cough when its turned off please can we keep them !!

Louii · 06/02/2011 14:10

We have been away for a week with no plasmacluster, feckin nightmare, coughing and choking, has taken a few days to get back to normal, it's not getting turned off now.

DaftApeth · 06/02/2011 15:09

Ds has not had the unit in his room for a few days, we have tried it in ours to see how it helps dh. This morning, I noticed ds waking up wit his old coughing and sneezing again.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is anyway we could pay £300 for this at the moment. Would Sharp consider £100-150 Gemma?

I would definitely look around for something else when we have to turn this one in, although, I appreciate less expensive purifiers may not have the same effect.
