Hello,

We’re pleased to announce a webchat with Jess Phillips MP and Flick Drummond MP, co-chairs of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Women and Work, on Monday 23 January at 2pm.

Monday sees the release of the APPG’s first annual report, which explores the broad theme of ‘women returners.’ It has considered ‘a range of diverse issues which impact on the ability of women to return to the workplace, particularly after taking maternity leave or fulfilling caring responsibilities.’

Jess Phillips is the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley. Before this, Jess spent five years working for Women’s Aid, and served on Birmingham City Council, where she was appointed Birmingham’s first ever Victims’ Champion. Since being elected to Parliament in 2015, Jess has served on the Women and Equalities Select Committee and the Backbench Business Committee. Last year she authored a guest post on Mumsnet in support of the Reclaim the Internet campaign.

Flick Drummond is the Conservative MP for Portsmouth South. Prior to her election in 2015, she worked as an insurance broker, Ofsted lay school inspector and was a member of the TA Intelligence Corps. Flick now sits on the Women and Equalities Select Committee, where her work has included contributing to the Gender Pay Gap inquiry, in which she called for more flexible working conditions to be offered at the start of employment. Flick cites her own experience of re-entering the jobs market after raising her children as important in giving her a first-hand account of the unique difficulties that women face in the workplace.

So if you'd like to talk to Jess and Flick about women and employment, returning to work, their experience of being women MPs (or just plain MPs), sounding off on Twitter or anything else that takes your fancy, do please join us on Monday. As always, please do keep in mind our webchat guidelines - one question each (follow-ups if there’s time) and please be polite!

Thanks
MNHQ

DoIt

That link was utterly depressing. I asked Jesse what she was frightened of. I suppose, rather naïvely, I hadn't considered that her job exposes her quite regularly just by dint of being a woman with an opinion on a public platform, in a man's world.

Considering how much information I have absorbed from FWR I think that is an oversight on my part.

However I now think it is definitely fear that is not allowing this issues to be addressed.

On the other hand, as Jesse is such a strong supporter of women's rights, she must have encountered this quite regularly.

Italiangreyhound · 25/01/2017 09:29

Yes, I can see they may have been scared. What is that quote about see who you are scared to speak about and they are ones who rule over you?

Can Mumsnet Headquarters find someone not scared to speak up?

Dr Zuckerman maybe?

Datun · 25/01/2017 09:56

'if you want to know who rules over you, look at who you are not allowed to criticise'.

Traditionally credited to Voltaire, but I believe that is disputed.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 25/01/2017 10:09

Dr Julia Long isn't an MP but she is an expert, and she said long ago that she'd be more than happy to do a webchat on this issue.

Or Stephanie Davies-Arai is a Mumsnetter and an expert on issues around children and gender.

Kate?

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 25/01/2017 10:38

Guess who else is back from the naughty step Halo

Sporadicus · 25/01/2017 12:19

they would be hounded out of their job if they gave a biological definition.

Didn't Jess say she'd like to punch her boss in the face? She wouldn't be hounded out of her job for giving a nuanced answer that took boths women's and trans rights into account.

Good to be back btw - never had so much as a deleted post. I'll be sure not to ask questions in a webchat again m'lord.

Twunk · 25/01/2017 13:04

Oh I've had lots of deleted posts on the MLM threads - I didn't realize until I went back to look at a couple and saw. I was extremely proud Grin

Now have you done your lines?

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 25/01/2017 13:53

I've had deleted posts too. Generally personal attacks to goadiness that I lost my temper to, usually re one of the ever-so-fun disability threads. I like to think that my ability to take a deep breath first has improved though!

Oh and a sort of warning implied by one post of mine being mentioned in the Broad Church thread (linked by Kate upthread). If that was indeed a "proper" warning, it is unfortunate that it wasn't clearer to me. A message to me along with the deletion of that post might have helped there.

AskBasil · 25/01/2017 14:28

We asked for Julia Long ages ago, she's agreed to do it and we kept asking and asking, but Mumsnet haven't asked her.

They clearly don't want her.

They don't want anyone who is off-message on this.

You notice they haven't come back with a response to the requests to get someone in who will address the issue of women's rights where they clash with real people's transgender rights.

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 25/01/2017 17:14

Is everyone back who was banned now?

Datun · 25/01/2017 18:20

fish isn't Shock

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/01/2017 18:22

Well I imagine she's pretty upset Angry
Is anyone in touch with her? Is she ok?

My previous admiration for MNHQ has really taken a beating over this. I always thought they did their best to be fair but some of these bannings have really not been.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 25/01/2017 18:30

If anyone shouldn't have been banned it's Fish. We encouraged her to post on this thread because she and her child really need help and Jess and Flick needed to hear the truth from her.

Was she really suspended for speaking honestly about her experience of Mermaids?

Datun · 25/01/2017 18:37

Because so many of us thought her question was important, it was cut and pasted several times with a plea to answer that if it was only one answer per topic.

Could HQ have some kind of algorithm which just identifies a user's name and therefore thought that she had posted more than she did?

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 25/01/2017 18:47

It was certainly possible in the heat of the live webchat, you'd think they would have checked by now though as people complained about it here as soon as she came back and said she'd been locked out?

DeviTheGaelet · 25/01/2017 19:58

Did anyone else hear Suzie Green on R5 this morning? I think the beeb are bending over backwards to be balanced

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 25/01/2017 20:13

Balanced in their Susie Green promotion? I didn't hear it, I just remember she was on Breakfast the day after their documentary was on too.

DeviTheGaelet · 25/01/2017 20:51

It was odd, they did a phone in on intersex and trans, Nicky Campbell seemed a bit out of his depth. I didn't hear much of it, it was a phone in so hopefully they got some GC viewpoints

Sporadicus · 25/01/2017 21:57

Yes there was one brilliant woman asking Helen Webberley what it meant to identify as a woman. Predictably Webberley fell back on sexist stereotypes and heartwarming tales of parents who refuse to buy 'girl toys' for their boys.

Twunk · 25/01/2017 22:33

Time we brought this out

I've been allowed back too now.

I thought I had been booted for good.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 27/01/2017 11:02

Fish StarFlowersWineBrewCake

Thank fuck for that. We were worried about you.

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 27/01/2017 11:03

I did wonder - I know mn frown on banned people making second accounts so thought they'd permenantly banned you for that when I didn't see you again!!

Nice to see you back Flowers

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 27/01/2017 11:04

(Empress, every time I see you I wonder if I should change emperor to empress in my name Grin but I don't want it looking like I'm referring to you!!!)
