Please could you organise a webchat with Dr John Briffa?

He is a great advocate of low carbing - and given how many of us are now signed up to my Bootcamp (around 80 signed up to start with!), he would be fantastic guest.

Did you know that as of Friday, those of us who are Bootcamping lost a total of 341lbs?! That's enough to make almost another three MNetters!

Dr Briffa has written several books, the latest of which Escape the Diet Trap is brilliant in terms of explaining why calorie counting doesn't work and why fat is good for you - completely over-turning the dietary advice the government has been so keen to foist on us over the last 30 years.

Please?

Please cos it would be cool and BIWi has done so much for us

johnbriffafan · 04/05/2012 18:31

He should be a permanent fixture, and judge everybody's shopping basket.

(He does that - in the nicest possible way - for slebs.)

Maybe he could judge shopping lists, too.

BIWItheBold · 04/05/2012 19:14

Where does he do that, johnbriffafan [interested face]?

johnbriffafan · 04/05/2012 19:25

Think it was the Observer mag that he used to do it in every week; maybe it was the separate Observer Food magazine??? But I'm sure it's also something I've seen him do in women's mags, eg Zest.

Always so bang on, in my view. And quite surprising; people think they're eating the right thing, but are getting it a bit wrong. Eg - surprise surprise - too many carbs.

johnbriffafan · 04/05/2012 19:47

Topical...Here is Ken Livingstone being judged.

There was always a great pic, as well, showing the basket, with Briffa's comments next to the offending items.

BIWItheBold · 04/05/2012 20:04

Oh I remember those articles - I didn't realise Briffa did them though!

johnbriffafan · 04/05/2012 20:13

Yes...I always liked the "nothing wrong with chocolate; it should be dark chocolate, though."

Whippoorwhill · 05/05/2012 10:32

Just adding my voice too. He is so interesting and would give great web chat I'm sure. His book inspired me to try low carbing and I've lost 1 1/2 stone already.

BIWItheBold · 17/05/2012 11:34

Any news re this? Given today's report about the recommendation that 20 million of us should be being prescribed statins, at an estimated cost to the NHS of £240 million, it would be a very good time to talk to Dr Briffa!

BIWItheBold · 19/05/2012 10:28

Well [dog with a bone emoticon] it wasn't the weekend on Thursday when I asked, was it?

It's since you've all been down the pub, isn't it? Not interested in us any more.

OliviaLMumsnet · 19/05/2012 12:10

At least bones are low carb.

BIWItheBold · 19/05/2012 12:27

I'm not feeling the love here, Olivia

AmberLeaf · 19/05/2012 12:33

BIWItheBold · 19/05/2012 12:36

AmberLeaf · 19/05/2012 12:37

Thanks Smile

BIWItheBold · 19/05/2012 12:41

My pleasure! Are you going to join us?

AmberLeaf · 19/05/2012 12:46

Im mulling it over! while struggling with rule No.7

BIWItheBold · 19/05/2012 12:46

Hmm. I'm guessing that might be the 'no alcohol' rule? Grin

BIWItheBold · 19/05/2012 12:47

I wouldn't worry. No-one seems to take any notice of half of them anyway!

Feckers

AmberLeaf · 19/05/2012 12:49

Yup thats the one! Grin

Also eating fat with gay abandon?! not that im not partial to fat but it just seems wrong to do it and expect to lose weight?

I will read more of the threads and swot up when I have more time though.

BIWItheBold · 19/05/2012 12:54

It's hugely counter-intuitive, but it is absolutely true. The very first week I started low carbing (many years ago now) I was amazed and not a little worried about what I was eating. I couldn't believe I would lose weight with the amount of food and the amount of fat I was consuming - it was a real leap of faith! But it works. In fact, if you try and do low carb and low fat, weight loss will slow right down or stop.

Read Dr John Briffa's book Escape the Diet Trap if you can - he explains it brilliantly there.

Which is one reason why I want us to have him here for a web chat, MNHQ
