Does parking on a closed road count as a live parking thread? 😁

So they have closed the road I live on to resurface it. It will be closed for the next two nights. We’ve had multiple letters from the council, there have been signs up for at least a month and yesterday they painted NO PARKING THURSDAY AND FRIDAY all over the road.

8 cars are still parked there with 15 minutes to go until resurfacing begins. One of the cars is right outside my house and when I saw them out the window, I tried to explain to the two women (looking like they were off for an evening in town) that they were probably not going to be able to get their car until morning but they told me to fuck off!

The road is lorry central, a guy is taking pictures of the remaining cars… it’s all go here.

Anyone know what they do? Do they just resurface round the cars? Tow them away? Do they get brutal? There’s a fair few annoyed looking men in hi-vis walking up and down! Should I get wine and a comfy viewing position?

😉

Another local here - might treat myself to a little nosey later today. I presume there will be plenty of other MNetters there to bump in to.

Never heard of the Hedgehog name before, that's really tickled me.

What will the secret sign be? Muttering "Wibbly Wobbly" under your breath as you go past?

Though that may result in a lot of new MNers in AIBU "This random woman called me Wibbly Wobbly as I walked past her, was IBU to deck her?"

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/04/2022 12:27

Talking of measurements, back in the last century, carpets were measured in metric (width) and imperial (length) to ensure that the 2 weren't confused. I guess with the swirly patterns it was important. I asked out loud whether using W and L might help. Very frost silence ensued.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 22/04/2022 12:29

Sorry the MN "look" comment was tongue in cheek based on the previous famous threads about the "MN haircut", the "MN scarf" and the fact that loads of people seem to assume we are all "mumsy" middle aged types!!

No offence meant at all!

Grin

I am very much enjoying the thought of all the random MNers wandering up and down the hill checking it out and muttering to themselves.

BarryKentPoet · 22/04/2022 12:29

Though I lived about an hour away, my 1st boyfriend was from St Evenage and would drive through to see me. I also used to go illegal raves in the nearby town L back in the 90s Grin
Loving this thread.

Have you not seen the new graffiti? It's on the local fb page Grin

I quite regularly wear the MN scarf.
But also, I work in one of the shops (not one of the boutique ones tho!) and often wonder if my customers are MN'ers. Some I reckon definitely are. Perhaps I can put a secret sign on the tills? 🤔

Doubleraspberry · 22/04/2022 12:31

The time my car was towed by road workers, it was only to a road round the corner. But with no clue where, and the team swore at me when I asked.

It did turn out that, despite what they'd told the council, they hadn't actually warned anyone on the street at all about the forthcoming works, either by letter drop or even signs, so quite a lot of us called them up to complain that our cars had disappeared, and that the team on the road were being obstructive and abusive. I got a very wholehearted apology, directions to my car, and an assurance that the company would be 'spoken to' - which won't have had any impact at all really as they are one of the mammoths of council contracting, but I like to think someone somewhere had an uncomfortable day.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 22/04/2022 12:31

Oh and the standard unit of measurement for my Dad and myself is "yay big" holding up your fingers to the rough equivalent.
It's worked so far.

Love the fucked up roundabout story!

DailyMaui · 22/04/2022 12:33

Zonder · 22/04/2022 09:51

Yes! Now if only someone could invent some kind of standard way to measure. Like a long line. We could call it a ruler. Or an extra long one could be called a tape measure. Someone should come up with something like that for these guys.

When we had an extension built the carpenter was FURIOUS with the bricklayer (who’d gone by then) as he was slack with measurements apparently. Every day it would be :
laying a floor - FUCKING SEAN
fitting a window - FUCKING SEAN
fitting the kitchen - FUCKING SEAN

Ever since, if anything goes wrong I blame Fucking Sean.

Please please do the secret sign thing.

Or maybe we could have a secret MN hand signal a bit like the masons?

Make an M then an N with our fingers to gauge if someone is in the "club"?!

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 22/04/2022 12:38

Soft toy viper is actually genius!

TeenPlusCat · 22/04/2022 13:08

PinkBackpack · 22/04/2022 13:10

Hmm. I don't have a soft toy viper. Let me have a think what I could get away with as its not always me on the till.

Or one of those 3 foot (or 1m) rubber snake things. I saw them in Home Bargains the other day for about 60 shillings.

I did a summer as a chain man (although I am a lady), setting out on building sites and I tell you back then (25 years ago) it's a wonder anything was ever built where it was supposed to be. These days it's all done with computerised kit for getting it millimetre perfect, and honestly some of it is very impressive.

I moved a whole building once with a crane and the new foundations were perfect, exactly where they were supposed to be to pick up the feet of the building being moved (prefab type on little feet, like a portakbin but BIGGER).

I'd like to agree, but a huuuuge machine has been moved from one building to another, (took three flat bed trucks) in its component parts, and despite a computer, a cutout to size and some very brainy people in charge, when finally put back together the business end was outside.

Then I went on holiday so I dont know if it's still partly outside. I mean the weather's been good and it's a company known to be lackadaisical.
The workers were filled with mirth though. It really was funny.
Allegedly the cutout hadnt been fully unfolded.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 22/04/2022 13:20

Saints be praised its back!!

I'm child free tonight was planning on settling in with vodka and nachos and enjoying the hedgehog love and parking drama!
