To ask for an explanation for wtf just happened? **MNHQ UPDATE: Mystery solved!**

I'm seriously creeped out and can't figure out a rational explanation so I'm hoping someone can!

Sitting in the kitchen, eating dinner when a black shape ran past my legs, close enough that I felt it pass. Figured it was my cat at first but when I stood up, she was sitting on the windowsill!

The dark shape ran into the living room where my partner is (he saw it too, because he shouted me!)

It apparently jumped on the sideboard and vanished in front of his eyes. There's nowhere it could go - the sideboard is solid oak on a solid stone wall.

The dog is now going mental at the sideboard like there's something there (if there is, we can't find it!)

I'm genuinely creeped out - anyone have a rational explanation? What the hell did we see?

It's a bat.

AtlasPine · 13/02/2022 22:18

@Uncomplicated

It’ll be a rat. They go quick. There will be a small gap somewhere you haven’t noticed
Yes, this.
Theworldisquiethere · 13/02/2022 22:18

As everyone else has said, rats can be huge, fast, jump very high, and squeeze into tiny spaces

I still vote ghost cat though

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 13/02/2022 22:20

I've seen every one of my 8 deceased cats after they died, only once each, then they moved on.

newrubylane · 13/02/2022 22:21

My mum had a bat in her bedroom which then just disappeared. Eventually figured out it was hiding in/entering via a tiny little space between the ceiling and a beam. They can get into the littlest gaps.

TeeNoG · 13/02/2022 22:21

We had a rat in the house once, and it squeezed behind a bookcase that was flush to the wall.
We left cheese out as bait, shut all the doors and left it that room with the cat. Opened the door half an hour later and the cat had eaten the cheese.
Turns out the rat was so frightened I was able to pick it up in a tea towel and put it outside Grin.
The cat couldn't have given a single toss.

But anyway, I reckon it's a Ghost Bat.

I’d vote rat. Check behind any drawers in the sideboard.
One of my son’s pet rats got into a desk and we spent an entertaining half hour trying to catch it. Every time we opened a drawer the rat was sat in it with this ‘yeah?what?’ look on his ratty face. But then he’d jump down the space behind the drawer again. :-)

Wagsandclaws · 13/02/2022 22:23

I believe in ghosts as have seen them so I'm voting for ghost cat 👻🐈‍⬛

Curiousmouse · 13/02/2022 22:24

Lying to a rat?

AtlasPine · 13/02/2022 22:25

@KeepYaHeadUp

Absolutely right not to lie for him. Fucker
You what now?
Closetbeanmuncher · 13/02/2022 22:27

Rat. Burn the house down NOW

Don't forget to log it with the police (only if you're shaking and crying of course) 🚨🤭🤭

I also think it's a rat.

chiickenandchiips · 13/02/2022 22:29

Rat.

We had an infestation and only actually saw them just twice they were so fast and disappeared into nowhere.

🤢 horrendous creatures.

ChuckMater · 13/02/2022 22:29

@WeirdlyKind

I just saw a dark shape run away from me. The hall light wasn't on so it was hard to tell but it looked animal shaped! Genuinely thought it was my cat at first until I saw her.
Op are you ok? No update for a while. 👻
ikeepseeingit · 13/02/2022 22:30

A rat, moth, or bat I think OP. I had an absolutely massive moth in the house once. No one else believed me and thought I was crazy talking about the black thing that went past me until a week later when it scared the living daylights out of my mother 😂

DanceForeverUnderTheLights · 13/02/2022 22:31

I'd rather have a ghost cat than a real live rat.

😹😹😹. This is so 'cat'. Lazy fekkers
tkwal · 13/02/2022 22:33

If you don't have skirting there's enough of a gap between floorboards and Wall for a rat to get through

FireMeetGasoline · 13/02/2022 22:33

It'll be a big jumping spider I would've thought.

Tilltheend99 · 13/02/2022 22:33

I used to get mice in my bedroom but my parents didn’t believe me. The can seem surprisingly large when scratching and gnawing around your bed at night. They can move fast at like any hollow space inside wood or a wall cavity. Are you certain it is solid oak/stone?

Namechange8787 · 13/02/2022 22:35

Well brilliant. I won't be getting any sleep now 😀

Tilltheend99 · 13/02/2022 22:36

@Closetbeanmuncher that game a laugh 😆

Tilltheend99 · 13/02/2022 22:36

*gave me

JoanThursday · 13/02/2022 22:37

@eekbumbler

I've had plenty of rats in my house large and small.. have seen them dart across the skirting board late at night and think it would be obvious if one of tha bastards touched me!

I am adept now of grabbing the squeaky fuckers with tea towel and lobbing em back in to fields over road.

You'd Def know if it was a rat.

Bloody hell. 😳

I'd emigrate.

WeirdlyKind · 13/02/2022 22:38

We're all wrong!

It was next door's bloody rabbit! Sitting watching Call the Midwife and the damn thing hopped out from behind the TV unit. Nearly gave me a bloody heart attack!
