To ask for an explanation for wtf just happened? **MNHQ UPDATE: Mystery solved!**

I'm seriously creeped out and can't figure out a rational explanation so I'm hoping someone can!

Sitting in the kitchen, eating dinner when a black shape ran past my legs, close enough that I felt it pass. Figured it was my cat at first but when I stood up, she was sitting on the windowsill!

The dark shape ran into the living room where my partner is (he saw it too, because he shouted me!)

It apparently jumped on the sideboard and vanished in front of his eyes. There's nowhere it could go - the sideboard is solid oak on a solid stone wall.

The dog is now going mental at the sideboard like there's something there (if there is, we can't find it!)

I'm genuinely creeped out - anyone have a rational explanation? What the hell did we see?

I’m voting poltergeist.

@BruceAndNosh

It was the remnants of Boris's reputation. Moves fast, difficult to see then disappears without a trace
🤣🤣🤣🤣

I can’t leave my back door open anymore as in the past few years rats and squirrels have taken over in my back garden, next to fields and neighbours who feed birds! Also my dog not around anymore to scare them off when they did try to get inside!

TerryChoc · 13/02/2022 21:12

Sounds like one of the twins from the Shining to me

Jellykat · 13/02/2022 21:12

Altogether now..
Theres a rat in my kitchen, what am i gonna do?

Dibbydoos · 13/02/2022 21:14

Probably a rat. Sorry but it's more likely than anything as there are 2.2 of them to every person in the UK.

We had one come in our kitchen last week. Our dog was going nuts, he and my son cornered it, my dog caught it when it tried to escape and my son put it outside on the nature reserve. Make sure you get rid of it ASAP. They can get into the smallest of spaces, live on small ledges etc. They can bite, so wear gloves and covered your lower legs.

Let your dog help! Our was a champion :)

I'm gonna fix that rat that's what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna fix that rat ...

My old cat likes to come and haunt us. Every now and again we get these sulphurous smells that remind me of clearing up after her. Funnily enough, they often appear around my 7 year old son. He's very firm that it's the cat and not him farting at all.
Probably a rat op. Probably.

LemonSwan · 13/02/2022 21:21

As a fellow cat owner I would of said a stray rat. However jumping on a table/ sideboard.

No rats dont do that. They stay low and to the edges and will jump but not if theres a nearer crevasse down low.

Lovemusic33 · 13/02/2022 21:22

It was the size of a cat….felt like a cat..

I’m guessing it was a cat 🤔

autumncrisp · 13/02/2022 21:22

Another vote for rat.

1forAll74 · 13/02/2022 21:23

probably be a rat, maybe the cat brought it in earlier, and cats and dogs always know if there is something hiding somewhere, even though you cant see anything yourself. My three cats have brought mice in several times, and they have disappeared from view, but the cats will sit and stare at some place, that they think the mouse is,, then they might go outside again, for ages, then two hours later, come in again, and sit and stare at the same place again, as they know the mouse is still in the house.. Dogs do this two, usually barking, instead of cat staring.

Cover all bases - call pest control and a preiest

KaptainKaveman · 13/02/2022 21:25

A ghost

thenightsky · 13/02/2022 21:26

Squirrel. Bit bigger than a rat and can jump like a bastard.

PigeonLittle · 13/02/2022 21:27

Rat.

Jetstream · 13/02/2022 21:28

A giant house spider?

TheNinny · 13/02/2022 21:28

Mouse, I had similar in my living room a few nights ago. A blurry shape darting across room. Also thought it looked bigger than mouse. I saw it looking at me under a chair. :o

Lovemydaxie · 13/02/2022 21:28

Look at the underside of the sideboard. We had a mouse clinging onto the base. Couldn't see it when we just looked under it.

TheNinny · 13/02/2022 21:29

I’ve also seen mice jump up walls a bit my moneys on that

TakeMeToKernow · 13/02/2022 21:31

Please have some kind of medal for immediately calling Mumsnet instead of Ghostbusters

Fl0w3ry · 13/02/2022 21:35

My rational mind says a rat or squirrel.
However, I had a similar creepy experience once. I was stood in my living room and felt a cool breeze behind me and heard what sounded like a voice. I turned around and watched as a waist height black shape ran away from me making a weird noise. Was by far the creepiest thing that has ever happened to me.

ImprobablePuffin · 13/02/2022 21:36

@OnlyAFleshWound

In our old flat we once had a rat jump up onto the kitchen counter EnvySadAngry
From the floor?! Can rats really jump that high? 🐀
twominutesmore · 13/02/2022 21:37

This is the beginning of a lot of horror films. You should obviously gather your family and leave. But you will convince yourself you imagined it and be doomed. You'll be back on here tomorrow asking if spinning furniture and blending walls are normal.
