I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

I'm listening to my treasured tape of 'Now That's What I Call Music' . I love every song -Safety Dance, Hey You! The Rocksteady Crew, Temptation.....
Tomorrow I'm helping out at the school roller disco. Me and my best friend have all the actions for 'dont blame it on the boogie' worked out.
I stink of Anaïs Anaïs

EnormousDormouse · 03/02/2018 18:50

Oooooooh and have you seen the new Next Directory? It's hardback and there's little samples of material stuck in it! Dead posh.

Twoweekcruise · 03/02/2018 18:53

Loved watching The Golden Girls with my sister and mum, going to trawl the internet until I find an episode.

Just put a red Toner though my hair

now off to watch Dynasty with my mum while we share a bottle of Safeway Hock and play gin rummy for Cadbury Dairy Milk squares!

Oh I miss being a teen

ToothyMcPuthy · 03/02/2018 19:17

I've just bought some new Rimmell Heather Shimmer lipstick if anyone wants to borrow some?

Lovely thread Smile

ToothyMcPuthy · 03/02/2018 19:20

Ah I can see the Heather Shimmer has already been mentioned. Never mind!

My Mum knocked me up an outfit just like Madonna's Like A Virgin outfit out of a white T shirt and net curtains. I'm sure there's more fabric if anyone else would like one not weird at all honest

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/02/2018 19:35

SO excited to see my hair in the morning. I’ve got these new bendy curlers. I hope I wake up looking like Susanna Hoffs or if it’s not that curly Rosanna Arquette in Desperately seeking Susan.

Getting braces fitted next week. Hope I don’t have to give up my Ipsos habit, I love them!

And hope my Kissing Potion doesn’t go all over them....

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/02/2018 19:38

Strawberry are the best!

I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.
HeresLookingatEuclid · 03/02/2018 19:51

Smudged my purple mascara listening to " Our Tune".

Readermumof3 · 03/02/2018 20:02

When I am 50 a few years to go I'm having an 80's disco. That's when all the best music happened. I'll not fit in my black sarsaparilla jeans, poser belt and batwing jumper with tukka boots any more however 🙈🙈

AFingerofFudge · 03/02/2018 20:29

How do we get this thread in classics? It can't disappear, it's the best thread there's been for ages!

AFingerofFudge · 03/02/2018 20:30

Oops, sorry, ignore me, I missed some of the posts this afternoon about classics.
I'll go back to back combing my hair and putting on my new electric blue top from c&a Smile

overnightangel · 03/02/2018 20:37

Can I wear my Def Leppard t shirt and stonewashed ripped jeans, drink a can of Sunkist, neck a pack of FizzWizz and moan about the Poll Tax?

Hecalledmecarrots · 03/02/2018 20:47

Am rushing to join you all on a Saturday night out!

Am hoping I get to slow dance with the boy I fancy to Phyllis Nelson’s “Move Closer”.

I’m panicking though cos my Pacific Prawn lipstick (the mini version) had melted into the pocket of my stripey jeans and I’m not feeling confident enough for my Heather Shimmer.

And my pink Viennese Facial Chalk Granules from the Body Shop are proving bastard to rinse off my face and hairline.

Love this thread, loved the eighties

maggienolia · 03/02/2018 20:56

Yep, going back to 1985. Trendy black jumpsuit, salt and pepper streaks and getting legless on draught cider.
When we used call boxes to talk to people. Where the receivers stank of fags and the box stank of wee.
And while I'm there I'm going to see the dad I've just lost and give him the biggest hug ever.

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 03/02/2018 21:28

I'm bringing my plastic bag and matching plastic jelly shoes. Can't decide whether to wear my ra Ra dress or white jumpsuit - both with white stilleto's. Not forgetting my plastc button earrings and going to wear my exclamation perfume. Can we go to Chelsea girl and then for a wimpy afterwards?

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 03/02/2018 21:29

Ooh and can I have a castaway to drink and please nobody buy those hedgehog crisps for goodness sakes!

Octopus37 · 03/02/2018 22:04

Can I mix a Castaway with cider to make a Blastaway?

Twoweekcruise · 03/02/2018 22:54

Mum and dad have gone to a dinner dance tonight so nan and grandad are coming over.
They’ve brought us some cartons of um-bongo, Top deck and smiths tubes to snack on while we watch tv.
Nan wants to watch beadles about and the generation game but says we can stay up late tonight and watch Juliette Bravo with them.
My sister is hoping Worzel Gummidge is on tomorrow, it scares her shitless when he removes his head but she loves that show.

This thread has made me smile and brought tears to my eyes as I think back to the 80s. I was merely a tot at the start of the 80s and nearly a teenager by the end.

My fond memory of a typical (late 80s) weekend would start with watching Going Live on Saturday morning, then I'd go to town with my mum - we'd go to Our Price and I'd sometimes get a record if I was very lucky. We'd always go to Woolworths, I'd get a lovely bag of pick and mix and my mum would get my dad a bag of raspberry ruffles. As a rare treat, we would go to Wimpy and I'd get a milkshake.

Sundays were spent playing on our street with the neighbours' kids, British Bulldog, hide and seek, then my mum would call me in for a Sunday lunch - minted lamb was my favourite. Evenings were spent taping the top 40 and (in the 90s) listening to Atlantic 252 whilst using an entire tank of hot water in my bath and at least 3 bath sheets to dry. The bath would always have a bath pearl (or 3) in it and I would put a VO5 Hot Oil on my hair, before washing and conditioning with Revlon Flex (the red one, had to be the red one).

Sunday night supper would be cheese toasties done in the sandwich maker and a cup of Ovaltine. Often my mum went to bingo with her friend, so my dad would watch Bergerac on the telly whilst I snuggled on his lap, then we would pick up my mum and she'd tuck me in my bed. I had a gorgeous Pierrot duvet set and was the envy of my friends.

God, I'd give anything to go back for a weekend...

1984 - I'm freezing. I've been outside the BBC for hours waiting for Duran Duran (they were on Saturday superstore). It was worth it though. We saw them drive in and I'm sure I caught a glimps of John Taylor in the back of the car as I chased it through the gates. Now I'm home I need to get changed. Off with the Duran Duran t-shirt and black trousers covered in zips and on with the very short skirt, neon sleeveless top and white stilettos so I can dance round my handbag up Raquels.
1988 - just need to wash the flamingo pink directions hair dye out before having a few beers whilst getting ready to go out. Think I'll wear my brown flowery baby doll dress, leggings and DMs. Off to see some obscure indie band at the Bull and Gate and drink snakebite and black until I fall over.

ShmooBooMoo · 03/02/2018 23:41

I'm just backing my History exercise book in a Michael J Fox poster....it's dead hard getting the face to sit right on the front ... but it doesn't matter anyway: Zowie's going to nick it and draw acne on it in a week or two!
It's the school disco on Thursday...I'd best remember to liberally cake my nose in Quinoderm in case I get spots.... I'm gonna wear my black leggings and big yellow jumper with figures in bright colours spelling DASH out on the front... I'll wear my watch...the one with the different coloured rings you can put around the face! I'd better find the diffuser for my Big Shot hairdryer, oh and my Trevor Sorbie wax, so my perm will look boss...might put it in my banana clip! Wish I knew what shampoo Feargal Sharkey uses in his Good Heart video...his hair isn't half shiny! It's probably Flex...might get it when my Timotei runs out. Anyway, I'll slow dance with Buzzer to Angel Eyes by Wet Wet Wet... He won't be able to resist me in my Ysatis or Gorgio (haven't decided yet!) We've been seeing each other for nine months...every one thinks we'll get married! We won't cos if I don't marry Michael J Fox I'll definitely be marrying Paul Young or Morten Harket from A-ha!
I hope the DJ plays Livin' on a Prayer though... I've learnt all the words from Smash Hits especially!
I'm going to see Spaceballs on the pictures with my mates on Saturday...we'll probably go to McDonald's later... I want to get back in time to see Blind Date...
I'll do my homework on Sunday as soon as I've had my dinner... Mum and dad always fall asleep on the couch then anyway and the only thing on the telly is Love Boat...that's crap and even if I liked it I wouldn't hear it over my dad's snoring anyway...

GeorgeTheHamster · 04/02/2018 10:03

I put Heart 80s on the radio in homage to this thread as I drove around collecting teenagers from parties last night...

(They still do dumb stuff - splash of vodka in your tea, anyone?!)

Only1scoop · 04/02/2018 10:16

Mums cooking the Sunday dinner, wanted to make a birds trifle for later but we forgot to buy one and Presto's isn't open on a Sunday.

Oh well, I've got my Texan bar for later. Tonight will be bath and then down to watch Howard's way and Heart to Heart.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 04/02/2018 10:17

I’ve been watching MacGyver, my sister loves him. I prefer The A Team. We’ve just got a tv with remote control so we don’t have to take turns to change the channel. It’s ace. I might get to watch MTV later at my friends house, we will make up some dance routines to our favourite songs, so excited!
