I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

I used to love the problem page. And the photo stories!

Well was watching Saturday Superstore. And someone rang in and shouted wanker.

Poor Keith Chegwin must be frozen solid.

And the Fame cast was on the radio.

Vulgarlady · 03/02/2018 12:23

I’m on my tea break at the big Miss Selfridge which is tacked onto Swlfridges in London. I get staff discount so I buy new clothes all the time. Today I’m wearing a grey sweatshirt dress, leggings and bright pink leg warmers plus a matching hand and a la Bananarama. Finished off with Miss selfridge “iron lady” lipstick. I look so cool, I might pop into the big Top Shop at Oxford Circus to pose...they’ve got a DJ in there so it’s like being in a club when you go down into the basement.

Afternoon all. We've had some nominations for this to go into Classics. Once the thread has had its day, we'll move it over there if no one objects. Speak now or forever hold your parachute pants.

AristotlesTrousers · 03/02/2018 12:58

This thread is ace! Should go into Classics. Smile

noraclavicle · 03/02/2018 13:03

Right, I’m off to Geordie Jeans for some tight satin trousers. I think I’ll nick my sister’s earrings before the disco: I’m SURE she won’t notice Grin

FernetBranca · 03/02/2018 13:06

So I’ve got very very thick hair, and I also have more hairs per square inch than anyone else ... you know what would look brilliant: yep, a root perm. It’s fine cos my mate Sally who’s working in a hairdresser and doing day release is going to do it for me as a model. Hmmm ... it feels a bit, dunno, “tangy” on my head but I just know it’s going to look great...

(I looked like a cross between Brian May and all three of Bananarama standing v close together)

dustarr73 · 03/02/2018 13:09

Yay classics.

Backingvocals · 03/02/2018 13:12

Love that fernetbranca. I also had a perm aiming for Kelly McGillis. Ended up with Su Pollard.

dustarr73 · 03/02/2018 13:18

Have to say thug the videos where so random

Twoweekcruise · 03/02/2018 13:20

Fingers crossed for Classics, it has made my day that this thread has touched so many ☺️

Funny how I can remember the lyrics to almost all the 80’s songs I’m listening to atm but can’t bloody remember what I went upstairs for?!

I'm up for the cinema, although I might need to find my fake ID...or we could just see Pretty In Pink and talk about how cool Molly Ringwald and her hat is during the interval...

Graphista · 03/02/2018 14:36

"But I can't find my flat white daisy punched mary janes? Anyone seen them? Actually does anyone remember these because I can't find a picture of them anywhere on Google?" Omg! I have mentioned these on here, on fb, googled... NOBODY else remembers them yet I remember them being HUGE my bff from then (who I am still in touch with) had them in white - but doesn't remember - I had them in black.

They were SO comfy!

Today I'm wearing leggings, oversized shirt and low slung belt. And the Mary Janes of course.

I was hoping to watch some 80's tv but it's not to be so I'm gonna watch breakfast club, romancing the stone, some kind of wonderful and maybe rain man. I watch BTTF and war games last weekend

Graphista · 03/02/2018 14:36

And another yes for classics of course!

TalkinPeace · 03/02/2018 14:49

Pixie boots

Leg warmers

Slush puppies

Janeways · 03/02/2018 16:22

Graphista! The daisy shoes - thank goodness you remember them! I was almost beginning to think I might have hallucinated them. Super comfy and looked just the ticket with my neon pink gathered ankle length skirt from Miss Selfridge with hip slung belt. I'm wearing a crinkled shiny shirt with the top button done up and a diamanté brooch to keep it closed. I've tonged my hair into curls but gelled my fringe poker straight. It's Dirty Dancing on at the cinema and I wish my hair looked like Jennifer Gray's

Only1scoop · 03/02/2018 16:26

I had the round toe Daisy shoes....

I remember when Timpsons did them in bright turquoise and orange too

Used to wear them with my shirt with tails in bright orange check from....Clock House at C&A

Only1scoop · 03/02/2018 16:28

I'm going to change into my burgundy mini stilettos later, with my black satin pedal pushers and pop to the new restaurant 20 miles away.

MacdonaldsSmile

CormoranStrike · 03/02/2018 16:33

I’m in - I’ve got this totally cool lemon jacket with rolled up sleeves, a pencil skirt, white blouse and skinny tie. I’m wearing that.

I wanted the total preppy look, but mum refused to buy it. She knows nothing.

I’m wearing Dewberry by Body shop.

Butteredparsn1ps · 03/02/2018 16:52

Can I hang out too? I’ve got a very cool man’s shirt from Mr Byrite to wear with my stonewashed jeans and leg warmers. I expect my Dad will be teasing me about the shirt soon.

I can’t decide between white musk and dewberry perfumes so I’m wearing both. That’s not too strong is it?

Can we watch Robin Hood before we go out first? I’m going to marry Michael Praed.

Only1scoop · 03/02/2018 17:03

Dewberry ooo lovely
I'll have a squirt of white musk too

Just thumbing through my mums Janet Frazer Club book

Clandestino · 03/02/2018 17:05

I got myself a haircut like Limahl's, went out wearing my aunt's oversized jacket with humongous shoulder pads and had my best blue eyeliner, blue mascara and pink glossy lipstick on. I wear no make-up now and the 80s are partly to blame, I think I covered 40 years of my life in one decade. Watching Desperately Seeking Susan and dreaming about Madonna's cool fashion style. Can't believe I fancied the likes of Limahl or Boy George, have a totally different taste in men now.
Getting really nostalgic here.

Twoweekcruise · 03/02/2018 17:22

Mr Byrite, bloody hell I'd completely forgotten about them!

Oh this thread has me smiling with a lump in my throat.

So many memories...

My friend's Mum doing my perm in her kitchen. The FUMES! Then "scrunching" it dry with my diffuser. It was fucking massive by the time I'd finished with it.

Multicoloured ski jackets. 100% polyester. Would sweat like a bastard.

Putting grolsh bottle tops on my shoes (huge Bros fan) that my mum made my older brother get from the clubs in town for me!

"Head" school bags in a variety of pastel colours. Anyone remember those? I thought I was the bees knees with my pink and grey one.

Banana clips to hold bushy hair in a weird curly stripe down the back of the head!

Scrunchies in a multitude of colours to match various outfits.

Green and red "Dash" tracksuit that I wore on non uniform day. I must have looked like an overgrown Christmas elf.

Mad dog 20/20 (that might have been early 90s though?). That stuff was proper nasty!

Watching Dynasty, Dallas, Moonlighting and the Golden Girls with my mum.

Blimey... I'm proper filling up now!
