To ask what is the strangest/creepiest thing that has ever happened to you?

JudgeyHotPants · 22/12/2014 13:24

I have two strange/creepy unexplained events that stick in my head.

The first happened when I was teenager, my DF ran his business from our family home and we had a phone/fax machine in the living room. Whenever we picked up the phone we could always hear a radio station playing very distantly on the other end. I'll never forget the time I picked up the phone to ring a friend and could hear Penny Lane playing!

The other is slightly more sinister. My DM and I were at home alone one evening, it was summer and still warm and I had the bedroom window open. I can remember hearing a loud crash in the garden, thought maybe the cat had knocked something over and thought little of it. Then my mum suddenly popped her head around the door told me that she was going to bed and that she'd "locked all of the doors". Thought it was an odd thing to say, but thought little of it. That night I was kept awake by the next door neighbours security light going on and off, and when I got up the next morning my DM pointed out that the garden ornaments and solar lights from next to the fence had been smashed.

That's when she told me that she to and heard the crashing sound the night before, and got up to investigate and when she looked through the kitchen window she was convinced she could see a person peering through the window, as as if they were standing next to it with their back against the wall and peeing in from the side, but wasn't sure if she was seeing things or not! She was scared enough to lock all of the doors, but not to ring he police it seems! Still freaks me out now! I'm sure someone was in our garden for whatever reason!

When I was about 5, I had a dream, for about 5 nights running, that was exactly the same. The whole family, Dm, Df and Ds and myself, would be sitting in the living room in front of the fire when the dog (soppy golden retriever) would grow to the size of the room and pick us all up, one by one, placing us gently in the fire. The night I didn't remember having this dream, my father put a cigarette out on the arm of the sofa instead of in the ashtray, and the ensuing fire gutted that room and my parents room that was above it. we were woken by a family friend, who was staying, and led to safety, but I will never forget the wall of smoke we had to walk through.
It's now 50 years later, and I've never forgotten that dream.

Really great thread!

I had forgotten about this - it didn't happen to me but to a couple who are good family friends, they are straight down the line types & wouldn't lie about something like this.

A few years ago they rented a holiday cottage on a farm for a weekend break, part of a group of cottages all in renovated barns/ workers cottages/ outbuildings. The owners lived in the farmhouse just across the yard. Whilst there they had a problem with the tv & couldn't get it to work properly. They went across to the farmhouse & spoke to the owners teenage daughter who said "oh no problem I'll pop over & have a look for you." They said fine but they were going out for a walk so would leave the key for her. They said suddenly she looked really worried & said "I'm not going in there on my own, I'll wait till you get back" - understandably they were slightly taken aback by this & asked her to explain but she backtracked & just muttered something about not wanting to be in the house alone in case anything went missing etc.

They went out for their walk, returned to the house, the girl's father came over to fix the tv & all seemed well. That night they went to bed, both of them woke up in the middle of the night to a loud scratching noise on their bedroom door, they said it sounded like a dog or something trying to get in. Their own dog was in the bedroom with them, on their bed & growling loudly with it's hackles up. When they finally summoned up the courage to open the door there was nothing there. The scratching stopped after that but naturally neither of them slept well!

They left mentioned it to the owners the nect day who admitted that several people had reported "strange things" - not surprisingly they didn't stay the second night!

My sister died several years ago so had never seen the house that I had bought after she died. Soon after we moved in, I kept finding little pills on the floor around the house in random places. I didn't recognise the pills at first but kept one back to show my mum the next time I visited her and she told me that they were my similar to the ones my sister took before she passed away. They were very specific pills relating to the illness that my sister had before she died so not random ones that you could buy from the chemist.

I'm really enjoying this thread and have a couple of creepy things to add Smile

When I was about 7 I was lying in bed at night reading 'Mr Pink Whistle". It was very late at night but I was an avid reader and often stayed up until the early hours reading if I was really enjoying the story. Anyway, my eyes started hurting and itching and I remember closing them for a couple of seconds to rest them before continuing with the story. When I opened them again I saw 3 Chinese or Japanese ladies stood next to each other against the wall opposite the foot of my bed. They were wearing Kimono type garments and had their hair up in tight buns. One had some balls in her hand that she was turning over and over. I can't remember what the other ones had in their hands but I dimly recall a spring-like thing. I stared in horror at them literally paralysed with fright until the one in the middle put her finger to her lips in a shhhh motion. I screamed louder than I ever have in my life and squeezed my eyes shut until mum and dad came running in my room. Mum said I was in a complete state of terror and I had to sleep in their room that night.
Obviously I accept the fact that it was late at night and I had possibly fallen asleep and dreamed the whole thing. Also, DM said I was ill at the time and had a very bad temperature so that also could explain it. However, in the months leading up to this episode a strange smell kept appearing from my bedroom. It smelled like rotting fish and was so strong it would make you gag. The only place this smell came from was in my bedroom, it smelled like something had crawled in their and died. On occasions I was unable to sleep in there and had to sleep with my parents. My bedroom was very neat, clean and tidy so the smell did not come from dirty living conditions. My Dad looked at the insulation in the loft thinking that perhaps it was somehow rotting above my room but all was intact.
After I saw these 3 ladies at the bottom of my bed the smell never returned again!

When DM was a teenager she was taking a short-cut with her boyfriend through the grave yard when she swears she saw something that looked like a monkey jump from behind one head stone to behind another. It was broad daylight but she was freaked out enough to turn and run out the church yard!

Another one from mum. About 20 years ago she was driving home early one morning after a night shift. It was a twisty rural road so she was going quite slow but had to do an emergency stop as a massive black dog jumped over the hedge row into her path, looked at her then jumped over the opposite hedge into the fields beyond. She was very shaken up by the near miss and it kept bothering her as she drove home. Then she realised...the dog had a massive long tail like a cat! And moved like a cat and jumped like a cat! She's convinced she saw a black panther or similar.
Some years later she was at work doing a day shift. She worked in an isolated psychiatric hospital set in woodland. It was a very creepy site and was basically units or wards (including the morgue) set in separate buildings spread throughout the woods. If patients escaped the staff would have to go out into the woods with torches to find them. Anyway, contractors were in for the day seeing to the trees in the woods and they got excited as they found evidence of giant cat scratch marks down some of the tree trunks. They took some of the hospital staff with them to examine some of the trees and lots of people took photo's. Someone mum works with sent the photo's off to someone/somewhere who agreed they looked like big cat scratch marks but could not confirm that they were. Mum is now convinced black panthers roam the North Somerset woods!!

place marking...

airedailleurs · 21/01/2015 18:23

mallet where in North Somerset was this, was it Barrow Gurney?

Cuddledaroundacat · 21/01/2015 18:30

Like a pp I too often get the feeling of someone touching my head when I'm in bed, its as if someone is gently resting their hand on me. I've even moved my pillow in case it was that touching me but it never was.

Anyway, one of mine.

Seventeen years ago I had to attend the hospital for some treatment, this turned out to be very painful and I started to cry and begged the doctor to stop. He told me that if he didn't continue it would mean I would need a ga so it could be done, I decided to close my eyes and let him get on with it. When it was over I thanked the nurse for holding my hand and said that it had made it much easier to bear, she then told me that no one had been at that end of the bed and certainly no one holding my hand.

When I got home, I lay on the sofa feeling very sore, then the phone rang. It was my sister telling me that our DM had died very suddenly and unexpectedly whilst on holiday abroad. She had died at the exact time I was having my treatment and had felt someone holding my hand.

MalletsMallet · 21/01/2015 19:23

Cuddle, that's so sad and beautiful that your mum came to look after you when you were in pain. I'm sure it was a comfort to you when you were grieving

squizita · 21/01/2015 21:22

I was staying at one of the few naice hotels in great Yarmouth. It's Victorian.
We were in the bar and I went up to the room to use the loo and pop some after sun on which is in itself spooky and weird on a British seaside holiday. While in the toilet I heard a posh man's voice say "are you ready dear?" In the room. The room was empty, locked and I was in the loo. The funny thing was I wasn't scared. Even in the loo not knowing the room was empty and afterwards knowing I had heard a voice. And I'm easily spooked. I spent a few minute in the room putting cream on my shoulder afterwards.
It was only in the lift downwards I thought "whoa!"
But to this day I wonder if it was some kind of "recording" of a couple many years ago. Maybe she had been exactly where I was sat on the crapper in the 30s or something and this replayed that moment!

squizita · 21/01/2015 21:28

Oh and until I was 10 or so I used to correct adults about my grandfather passing away before I was born. Because I'd played with grandad squizita in gran's garden (he died of a heart attack in the garden garage). He was quiet and gentle and I remember he had a budgie in a cage. Which you guessed it ... was a pet that died before I was born.

BlackSwan · 21/01/2015 21:43

A small thing but here it is. I work in an office building. There are 4 elevators, all operational. I often approach the elevators, and with no indication of which one will arrive next, I will walk to an elevator door and lo and behold, that's the one that arrives. It happened yesterday and two people were walking behind me as I approached the doors and stood in front of one, I thought - are they going to notice what happens? I knew it would be the one to open, but of course, they didn't...

londonrach · 21/01/2015 21:45

Mallet ive seen the black cat/panther in the hills near taunton. Was chased away by a jack Russell dog followed by a man with a gun who said which why and ex bf and i pointed.... Police used to warn people about it. D ex bf and i certainly heard panther late at night and we did take pictures but boots in taunton mucked up the film. They missed up other films but this one mattered. True story!!!!! Not heard or seen the panther for years so must have died out. It was after that dangerous animal act.

milkpudding · 21/01/2015 22:02

Odd coincidence but not spooky.

I swapped email addresses with a woman I met backpacking in Thailand. We wrote our email addresses on bits of paper.

The next time I logged into my email account I entered my username and password but ended up in her account. I logged out and in again a few times, every time I was in her email account.

We hadn't emailed each other yet, so our email accounts were not linked in any way.

Weird coincidence. The next day my account was back to normal.

FryOneFatManic · 21/01/2015 22:04

Mine are tame in comparison to some of these.

I'm now 46. when I was around 15 I had a series of dreams that I began to realise were premonition type dreams. I normally have really weird surreal dreams and these would be of ordinary, mundane things. Like a news reader reading something very specific, using words that you'd not normally hear.

These dreams came true on average between 3 months to a year afterwards. Apart from a couple that never did come true. Most odd. I'd get a funny feeling just as the event I dreamed about began to start, I would sort of blank out on anything not associated with the dream.

It kind of got to the point that I would recognise these kind of dreams while still in my sleep. I'd know this was one of those dreams, I think this is related to lucid dreaming. I would be like a watcher in my dream seeing it all unfold.

I haven't dreamed like that since. Problem is, I can't prove these dreams in any way, as I didn't write anything down. Missed a trick there.

The other one is that just before Xmas, my mum fell and broke her knee. She's convalescing in a care home right now, as she can't come home until she's regained some mobility, as my dad also has health issues and couldn't look after her all day.

Yet I was recently asleep, or half awake in bed, I don't know. Middle of the night, anyway, and I swear I felt my mum's hand rubbing mine in the way she does. It felt so real, but maybe my subconscious was at work, certainly I'd been worrying that day about her situation (day of transfer from hospital to care home). And she's still very much alive.

airedailleurs · 21/01/2015 22:05

I'm from near that area Mallet and we used to make joke about being sent to Barrow Gurney at school (not very pc but it was the 70s!), but I have never been there and I think it's all been demolished now?

KaosReigns · 22/01/2015 04:22

Loving this thread. Feel obliged to make a contribution, though it is not much compared to most of these.

As a teenager my dog and I would walk the path next to the cemetery most afternoons. She was well behaved and had an imaginary lead of 3 meters which she never strayed from, except for one afternoon when without warning she bolted across the cemetery, leaping over gravestones on her way until she suddenly stopped and sat quietly staring at a gravestone and wouldn't move until I (absolutely mortified) clipped on her lead and dragged her home.

I was so horrified at the time I didn't stop to see who she had taken such a sudden liking to. It wasn't until I told the story to a couple of friends (while walking the same path half soused at 3am) that I realised how creepy it was.

cuttiesandmoveon · 22/01/2015 07:01

Last year, DH and I had decided to try for a third baby. After the first time of unprotected sex I knew I was pregnant...just knew and insisted I was. I don't know how I was so certain.

A week after this, we were out in a rooftop bar on a clear night. I was thinking about being pregnant, and how sure I was then I suddenly thought "but maybe I'm not". I looked up and saw a shooting star. I smiled and knew I was.

The following week brought with it positive test. I've just finished feeding my third baby :-)

bringonthetrumpets · 23/01/2015 02:01

I've been reading all of these since the thread started up and keep thinking about all the weird things that I've had happen in my life that would be good to tell someone as anyone else would think I'm crazy! So here goes:

When I was 11 or 12 I had a dog that we had left with my aunt and uncle to take care of while we were on family holiday for the week. When we got back my aunt called to say that our dog had run away and that she had been missing for a couple of days. I remember my mum driving all around to houses near my aunt's house to ask if anyone had seen her and we did this for several days but no one had any news. One night I had this dream that my aunt opened her door one morning and that our dog just walked in the door, but that she was limping. I told my mum about my dream right when I woke up in the morning (jumping in my mum's bed, you know how kids do Grin) and she just said "aww, honey, that would be nice wouldn't it?" Then during breakfast about an hour later my aunt called to say that our dog had returned! When my aunt opened her front door to let out her own dog, my dog was sitting there and just trotted in, but was limping. We got her home to find that she had been shot in the hip. She also had chicken feathers in her fur so we knew that she had gotten into a chicken coop and whoever it was that shot her was just protecting the flock. It was so strange to have that premonition dream, my poor mum was quite freaked out about me for a while.

Another one was when I was 22 and newly married. My DGp was battling lung cancer and we thought he was in remission. I was feeling a little off for a couple of days and I couldn't put my finger on why I was feeling so odd. One night I had a dream that had my grandpa holding a baby boy in a rocking chair and he was just so happy. It was super weird because there were no babies in our family at the time and I knew to just take it as a sign. The next morning my af still hadn't shown up so I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. I knew in that minute that my grandpa was sick again and that he would be dying soon. I cried (a lot)because I just knew. My dad called me about an hour later to let me know that grandpa had been admitted into hospital and that I should drive up to see him as soon as I could b/c it wasn't good. When I got to the hospital I told my grandpa that I was pregnant (would have been his first great-grand baby) and he told me that he knew. Gramps passed away two days later and I knew when he passed. I woke up super early in the morning and just remember saying "grandpa I know you're here" and went back to sleep. My dad called that morning to say that he had passed in the early morning. I've never told anyone about those dreams before...

The other super odd thing that happens to me all the time is that I always see a street lamp or stop light go out when I'm near. It's been happening for as long as I can remember. The only people in RL who know about it are my DH and his best friend. It really freaked out his friend because we were walking to the pub and the street light went out so I told him about how this always happens to me. He thought I was just making it up. When we walked back to his after the pub we could see the light was back on and then went out again when I walked past it. He wouldn't walk near me anymore.

fatpony · 23/01/2015 02:17

Jeez...now i'm too creeped out to go downstairs to the loo!

NCbutIstillmightbeouted · 23/01/2015 03:16

When I was little, I use to tell my parents about the farmer that walked through the wall next to my bedroom door.

Its only now that (I hope I explain this right) my bedroom, which is at the front of the house, use to be the only bedroom, and the "wall" was actually a door, because my bedroom was the back of the house (the house has been added onto) and the house use to be a farm.

The other weird thing was a night when I arrived home and was the only one at home, I was cooking dinner and waited for Dad, only for him to ring and tell me he had been in a car accicident, he was ok, but he didn't want me to worry. So I rang my mum at work, left her a message to ring me back cause dad had been in an accicident.

I was maybe 15 tops, five minutes later I look at the clock and 2 hours have gone by. I have no knowledge of those two hours, my mum had rung the phone every 15 minutes (this phone would of woken the dead). The pan was still on for the potatoes and the chops were still cooking. Nothing had burnt

dustarr73 · 23/01/2015 05:08

NC That reminds me of the time my mam had only died.My dp had gone out and kids where asleep upstairs.I fell asleep about 1 downstairs woke up at 5 with the drier still on.Even if the drier had been put on by me it still should have knocked itself off after a certain amount of time.Plus the clothes werent really hot or anything.Really weird.

Claybury · 23/01/2015 08:33

DH and I woke up many years ago to find the box of tissues next to the bed was intact but empty, and the tissues in a neat pile next to it. It was on his side of the bed and we were both totally baffled.....

rach6122 · 23/01/2015 09:19

ok this is not really that creepy but im just sitting here reading this thread and on phone to dh who says ive got a really bad taste in my mouth, this jogged my memory of my dream last night where I was kissing him but his mouth tasted horrible, and then he said what did you dream about last night? he would never normally ask that! so strange.

anyway when I was younger we lived in an old house and my stepmum brought a picture down of a man she found in the loft. after that, the dog used to bark to the air (nothing there) and my stepbrother used to talk to someone in his room called mr devlin, and he always used to put one arm in his sleeve when he showed what mr devlin looked like. lots of creepy stuff happended like appliances turning on and off but the scariest thing was one day me and my sister were sititng in the living room, and the bottom of the stairs was in the living room (open plan if that makes sense) and the door at the top of the stairs started swinging open and closed, at first we though perhaps the window was open but then the door handle started going up and down as well! we just ran and ran!!!
