I'm not being weird thinking this is a bit odd, am I?

Went to the shop to pick up some bits, and when the lady was packing my bag she asked me if it was ok to snap a baguette in half so it would fit in the shopping bag. She then added, 'or you could have it sticking out of the bag,' in a tone that seemed to say that letting it stick out would be pure madness.

It's not angered me or anything, I'm just wondering if it's odd for shop staff to essentially, cheerfully offer to damage shopping for their customers.

I declined, and put it under my pram. She seemed a tiny bit put out that I didn't take her up on her practical offer.

It was weird, right?

Very weird. I've never seen anyone fold a baguette in half to put it in a bag.

It made me chuckle a bit as well, it was just so weird.

That's kind of what made me query it, the fact that she clearly thought I was a bit mad for refusing. She'll probably tell her mates about the weird customer who didn't want her bread snapping for ease of packing.

I witnessed baguette rage once when i worked in a well known major supermarket......woman 1 accidentally bumped her trolley into woman 2 - whose response was to ignore the "sorry" and bop the lady on the head with a french stick

Ha, this has actually happened to me once. I think I actually agreed in a bemused/amused confusion.

Well I have been known to snap my own baguette when bag space was at a premium! But yes, it's weird for the shop assistant to offer.

Once I snapped it though and it fell out on the street and a dog ate it in front of everyone. Not my finest moment. Maybe I need professional baguette snapping help...

I once bought pate in sainsburys from the deli counter and the girl was like, "DO you want me to scrape it into a little pot for you?"

Erm, no... slices will be fine in a little plastic bag as normal.

I also snap my own baguette. Probably since the checkout lady offering incident. It was clearly an epiphany.

I also have fond memories of eating the end of the baguette as a child hoping my mum wouldn't notice...

If I wanted two truncated baguettes I'd buy them. If I want a long 'un, I get a proper sized baguette. No one had better flippin' mess wiv me when I'm baguette buying.

That woman was blardy psychotic Mrs Chemist, and she should keep her carbohydrate violence in check. (maybe that's it, maybe she was on Atkins and had developed envy based hatred of all carbohydrates, did she also offer to mash your spuds for you, or grind your penne into cous cous with her bare hands?)

I do hope no one asks her for assistance getting a squirmy toddler into a trolly.
