an Albatros has one egg. It takes both parents 2 years to raise the fledgling. An elephant has one calf after a gestation period of 12 month. It takes the parents 4 years to raise it.
In the past there were many reasons why people had more than one child. Today the world is overpopulated. There are many reasons why one child families are successful.

Um but elephants generally have single pregnancies just like most humans do, they can and so many offspring in their life. Perhaps more than most humans (6 offspring or more).

Not that they only have one offspring ever and then they're done.

Back to the drawing board eh. What will you come up with next?! I can hardly wait

& albatrosses also breed more than once. The point is that they & elephants wait till the kids are grown up & can fend for themselves! Humans can't do that until they're at least 16 years old - usually not until they're 25!
Many young women flatter themselves that they can raise more than one child without any problem. But I haven't come across such a family. As soon as the second child appears, the problems come along too.
And the world IS overpopulated!!

Don’t be silly op. We had 6 kids snd they are all bloody brilliant adults with a lot less prejudice than you seem to feel.

They all pay tax too so will help keep you in your old age.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having just one child, but also there's nothing wrong with have multiple or even none.
What's with the self congratulatory "how great am I, I've chosen to have only one child so I'm not over populating the world" bullshit about?
Also, you couldn't have come across many families at all if you've never come across one that can raise more than one child without problems
My DM has raised 5 of us without problems. I've got just the one child (and likely will stay that way), and I believe I'm just as good a mum, but certainly no better than my own, simply because I haven't contributed to the over population like she did.

I'll answer all of yous in good time. But first the most irrelevant : the cuckoo is forced to leave it's egg because of the way it has to develop the next one. They'd get in each other's way.

Today I wrote about China. It reduced the population, increased wealth all without a war. The population was not happy because they believed that the SONS must look after the aging parents. We put our parents into homes...

Famine & government sponsored murder also controlled population in China.

I only have one child and we're all happy with that. The trouble with over population is, yes it's a thing globally but it impacts locally. Therefore in some countries such as Germany, an aging population with lower birth rates is a possible precursor to an economic crisis. Low birth rates in Denmark which has a population of 5.5m mean economic issues which they are trying to avoid through government backed initiatives to encourage procreation, particularly in rural areas.

We will likely be a one child family. Nothing to do with over population or elephants though.

I think one person's lonely is another person's crowded. Essentially families come in all shapes and sizes which is a great thing.

I often worry about what is right for our family in terms of having another baby or not and clicked on this thread thinking it might be a positive one.

You're right , vamp, it's distressing for me how much hate appeared. Why can't people just think about these things rationally?
I'm especially upset with these governments who encourage extra birth. What's wrong with encouraging more emigrants? If you could look at your DNA you'd find that we're all one family anyway.
The other thing about old age is that as robots are getting more sophisticated we won't need a lot of workers in the distant future anyway.

I think when the babyboomers reach the end of their natural lifespan we will see a big population drop anyway

That’s because of society, not biology. We keep our children dependent on us for an artificially long time. Trying to make comparisons to other animals is utterly ridiculous.
