maomao · 19/01/2005 13:49

Wouldn't that be similar to hot orange juice? [confused emoticon]

suzywong · 19/01/2005 13:55

oh you know all the hoo-ha around chinese medicine, most of it tastes like old sticks covered with creosote to me anyway (no offence)

Talking of books, has anyone read The Kitchen God's Wife? I think it's Amy Tan? I read it years ago, i really should catch up on the chinese lit scene theses days

maomao · 19/01/2005 13:57

OOohhh I am soooooo offended! You should have been forced to drink the horrible, thick, black, medicine tea we had to drink as children. YUCK

marz · 19/01/2005 20:15

Funny, I did not mind the taste of the strange medicine/teas....and I had more than my fair share of them. Shame I dont know how to cook them....but I do have a load of reindeer antler in my fridge...(or something like that...) was told to buy it then never did anything with it and have since forgotten what I was supposed to do with it...and no longer have contact with mother! I think it is good for postnatal recovery or something....interesting info for all you pregnant people!

bea · 19/01/2005 20:19

Hee! Hee! like i said all the things my mother makes me drink and eat... i should be as fit as a fiddle with gorgeous looks!!!!

update? ds (almost 1!!! sob! how can a year go so fast!!!) has just started crawling and am horrified to the things he heads for and seems intrigued in! videos, telephone, wires, lamps, plugs... most disgruntled as i didn't order a real baby!!!! my first (dd now 3 and a half) was an angel child and didn;t bother with any tamperings in dangerous stuff when his age....i mean... he even picks things off the floor and eats it!!!! - by the way my friends all find this very funny and tell me now i know what it's like to have a real baby!!!!

bea · 19/01/2005 20:21

and to add to the chinese food stuff... my mum keeps in our freezer... dried chinese mushrooms and a bag full of 'soup' stuff - i can make out dried scallops being one of the strange things amongst the sticks and twigs... and.... a little slab of spam....

blossom2 · 19/01/2005 20:22

Marz - think i'll pass on the reindeer antler!!!

Speaking of post-natal care, did anyone try the chicken, ginger & rice wine broth that mothers insists are good for you??

I've read most of Amy Tan's novels and got a little bored after a while. I also read some of other authors as well but since having DD reading is a real luxury. Is the Good women of china any good???

maomao · 19/01/2005 20:30

LOL at the reindeer antlers! What ever will you do with them now, marz?

And the slab of spam... in the bag of "soup stuff" has me PMSL!

For some reason all of this reminds me of when one of my cousins' DHs opened up a jar and popped a handful of fermented blackbean in his mouth --- he'd thought they were raisins!

marz · 19/01/2005 20:53

The reindeer antlers....well, think I will keep and give to whichever dd of my two gets married first!
As for soup things...I LOVE dried scallops...I mean really like to chew on them, or even chuck some in to steam with rice, and my dd's make a beeline for the fridge when it is opened for the dried prawns...they love those! dd2 only has 6 teeth and still manages them!
As for books... Amy tan, I am not sure that I liked her that much, althoug it was years ago that I read her... what about Wild Swans? I liked it when I read it then saw Jung Chang giving a talk and found her so irritating, almost as if she was speaking for every Chinese woman in the world...(I just hate that attitude...) it really put me off her!

yingers74 · 19/01/2005 21:10

Hello all,

Regarding chinese lit, not read that book but have read all the amy tan books which I think are pretty good. Was not so keen on wild swans though!

I tend to ignore the contents of my mum's freezer, I eat it and don't ask too many questions.

Anyway, i may be quiet for a while. Have had some bleeding which has obviously rather scared me, I have been told to take it easy so I will although how easy can you take it with a young child!

Take care all

maomao · 19/01/2005 21:13

Think I will definitely do that, am gearing myself up for the whole conception thing again. I will wait a little time but not too long. patience has never been my strongest point.

Take care x

suzywong · 24/01/2005 15:24

bea · 24/01/2005 16:17

Yingers... thoughts are with you... take care! and don't leave this thread!!!

yingers74 · 24/01/2005 20:28

yes I have one dd.

Mum has been making me all sorts of soups, some tastier than others, and she wants me to do half an hour of exercise a day once I feel a little better to get in shape for the next time I conceive!!! Mums don't you just love them!

Chatting on this thread and others has certainly helped me a great deal.

Luv to all x

maomao · 24/01/2005 20:31

Oh yingers, so sorry to hear your news. I'm glad that your mum is there to help you and feed you soup!!!

blossom2 · 25/01/2005 17:40

Yingers - how are you doing? Don't want to be insensitive and i know its a hard time for you. Maybe this question to get your mind of things for a couple of seconds ....

i wanted to ask if anyone is giving red envelopes this year?? if so, what is the going rate in London?

OP posts:
yingers74 · 25/01/2005 22:07

Hello! Am ok, looking forward to trying again for a baby, best to look forward, fingers crossed. Send me baby dust.

Red envelopes, My mum thinks that red envelopes should only be given to children who are a generation younger than you, ie, nephews, your own children and then only if you are married. As my bro and none of my cousins have kiddies, the only person to get an evelope will be my dd! A fiver is fine, although two from me and two from my dh means twenty! My aunts and uncles stopped giving me anything when I hit about 22 and started working! Although my parents and gran still give me a token gesture!!!

blossom2 · 25/01/2005 23:08

Loads of baby dust on its way to you from Paris!!!
Maybe have a weekend in Paris - the city of love
although not now as its way too cold !!

I have 15 neices & nephews (ranging from 25yrs to 6 mths) so you can understand why it gets very expensive at chinese new year. Thankfully we don't do Xmas or birthdays. I was thinking of being very generous this year and giving £10 each - am i mad?!??!!?

OP posts:
yingers74 · 27/01/2005 09:13

OMG 15 neices and nephews - wow! Think i will be waiting a while before I get any.

Ten pounds seems reasonable especially to those receiving!!!

Will u be coming back for chinese new year?
