A friend shops at Aldi and Farm Foods for family of 4 and tells me she does food shop for £60 -£75 a week.

She batch cooks a lot, uses frozen fruit and veg and not too much meat so maybe its true but it just seems so incredibly low!!

Some of my food bills have been nearer £200 in recent months so I've been feeling like I'm doing something wrong after speaking to her.

What are you spending each week?

I think we might be nearly £100. Per week for 2 adults. No alcohol or pets.
Sometimes Asda, sometimes Ocado.

LumpySpaceCow · 16/10/2026 19:54

2 adults and 4 kids - I am struggling to get it under 250.

Toastietoastie · 16/10/2026 19:55

2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 giant dog. Approx £100 a week then £20/30 every fortnight for cleaning / toiletries.

Nightmanagerfan · 16/10/2026 19:57

2 adults, 2 children and a cat, we average £170, it’s frightening! Nothing particularly fancy either

BitterTits · 16/10/2026 20:00

2 adults, 2 teens, up to £150/week including top-up. Small recompense, but if you shop at Tesco, Sainsbury's or Morrisons you can buy gift cards using the Everup app and at least get cashback. I'll have my Christmas shop 'free' this year and use the clubcard points for a weekend away.

CurlsLDN · 16/10/2026 20:01

2 adults and a 12 year old boy with hollow legs. £70-£80 per week at Sainsbury’s, including meat or fish every night.

TheGriffle · 16/10/2026 20:02

2 adults, 2 kids (9 & 13) and 2 cats, we vary between £180 and £210pw depending on what’s run out. No alcohol but 3 meals per day for all 4 of us, all cleaning supplies, cat food etc included in that.

Sawroof · 16/10/2026 20:03

£197 for the last week, sometimes over £250. Family of 5. No pets, no alcohol, no loo roll, no nappies and not many toiletries. But we buy soft fruits, premium brand meat and sometimes pre-prepped ingredients, and pre-packaged kids snacks. We know it could be cheaper but we pay for convenience and for the things we like/that our dcs will eat.

Askandyforcompo · 16/10/2026 20:05

At least £200 a week for two adults and 2 cats. Includes cleaning and laundry stuff.

Aliceisagooddog · 16/10/2026 20:06

£250 on average, family of 7, only 1 child under 18

AlphabetBird · 16/10/2026 20:09

Watch out, lots of people will be here in a minute claiming they spend £13.75 a week and get three solid meals a day and snacks out of it for a family of 6 and their pet donkey.

Shoobadadoo · 16/10/2026 20:10

I thought ours was mad high. But gone through the actual numbers and it’s £450 a month for 2 adults and 3 small kids. so around £125 a week

Inc 2 lots of nappies. Kids snacks, lunches for 2 children 1 has school lunches. 1-2 bottles of wine a month. No let’s

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 16/10/2026 20:11

2 adults and 2 kids here (age nearly 4 and 7). We spend £90-120 per week, more at the 120 end if I need to stock up on cleaning products and dog food etc

I thought that was a lot but looking at this thread it seems like it isn’t.

I don’t buy a lot of pre prepared snack type foods. For snacks we have things like bread sticks, slices of cheese, apples, crackers. Yoghurt is plain Greek in the big tubs. We don’t eat loads of meat.

DarkLion · 16/10/2026 20:12

Most weeks I’m at least £120-150 for 2 adults and a 10 year old. The 2 adults are myself on a high protein diet (I do gym) and my adult sister I care for who has disabilities so her diet was quite limited. Slowly getting there now and there is more she will eat now. I do make all sauces from scratch with veg in that she and my son claim they don’t like but will if it’s sauce with pasta, buy reduced fish and meat where I can and we have a lot of fruit and fresh things. I have spent the week doing a lot of batch cooking though which is a lot easier with cold weather meals whereas in summer was buying a lot of salad bits that didn’t last very long. I tend to buy laundry products and cleaning from b&m/home bargains however and now in the run up to Christmas I’ll be buying non perishables every week to store away for Christmas. I can’t imagine £60-75 in Farmfoods would get a lot of nutritious food but perhaps she’s very savvy! I just can’t seem to cut it down anymore without feeling like we’d be lacking nutrients such as iron, vitamin b12 and other vitamins

ithinkthereforeyouarewrong · 16/10/2026 20:13

Family of three £100 on main shopping including toiletries, cleaning products and alcohol. About £20 per week on milk/fruit/bread top ups.
Mostly Tesco/coop, mostly Tesco brands. Meat free 4 nights a week but often feed an extra 2-4 on a Sunday.

Windowcleaning · 16/10/2026 20:14

Three adults, three cats. About £150 a week. Not including two of adults sometimes buying lunch out of the house.

No meat. No alcohol. All Tesco brands..

See I’m really interested in how you can spend £150 on Tesco brands! It’s a shame we can’t post our actual shopping lists

We used to spend a tonne at Aldi. We liked the specially selected stuff and found the quality excellent. However, we'd do say £120 a week there, then top-up shops of about £60-80 because we'd inevitably have forgotten something.

Now I use Waitrose home delivery and we're eating soooo much better and it's about £135 a week! £165 if we get alcohol.

There's 2 adults, three kids from 6 to 18. Having said that this week's was only £110 because I have a frozen roast chicken left over from last week. And we spent about £25 having a right old junk fest in B&M plus getting the fabric softener I like.

Online shop is absolutely the way to go to get your costs down. I don't pick up £30 of oooh I fancy that as I meander round the aisles. I meal plan better too. I do think we're eating better quality food as well, Waitrose is really nice for cooks. Less so for ready meals, but we're not a ready meal family.

CherryKerry · 16/10/2026 20:32

2 adults. Probably average £80 per week. Sometimes goes to around £120 if it's a week I need Coke, beer, wine, olive oil, laundry stuff etc. I usually buy the cheapest per unit pack size which generally means spending £15 on a giant pack of laundry pods but they obviously last for ages.

Plus another £20-£30 p/w on the local bakers/butcher. Can be more as e.g the cost of a steak pie has hit around £10 at the butchers.

We could totally cut down if we had to though, we are quite extravagant as we're pretty low cost in most other areas!

Letsgonowthen · 16/10/2026 20:43

2 adults and a primary aged child. I spend approx £80 a week I reckon but can fluctuate by £30 in either direction depending on how much we already have in stock. I buy mostly organic / non-UPF stuff.

LouiseD2018 · 16/10/2026 20:53

100-130 a week vary from Tesco / ocado mostly online. Aldi near my workplace so a couple of times a month I'll pick up things we like from m there..

Family of 4. Some dairy intolerance. Picky eater for nursery lunch and 2 adults packed lunches adds to the cost. No alcohol. Shop offers mix of own brand and branded.

MrsPernicious · 16/10/2026 21:22

Your friend may be fibbing a bit £60 is £15 per person per week - you can't buy enough calories for that to work.
A really good lentil knitter could probably feed people for £25 per person per week. Realistically, if you can feed your family for £30 per person per week - you are fecking amazing.
30p Lee can go do one.

Alwaystrustyourgut · 16/10/2026 21:29

I spend £250 a month for two adults on food then maybe £40 on top for cleaning /toiletries. Dog food is £80 a month for one large dog on a raw diet. We do eat out maybe once a week and my son often buys a meal deal if out and about. I do batch cook and meal plan to keep costs down as much as possible

DevastatingFinish · 16/10/2026 21:33

£350 this week 😱

It is sadly £300 a week ish now. However I do buy a lot of organic meat/fish/eggs/milk and veg, lots of brand names, Ocado and top up at Marks or Waitrose generally. 2 adults, 15yo gym bunny on a bulk and 11yo hollow legs and a dog. Luckily it’s OK for us and it’s something I would prefer not to cut back
on, but it is insane how much it’s gone up when I am buying roughly the same stuff as always.

Ireolu · 16/10/2026 21:47

About 130/week. 2 adults one child. We bulk buy fish/meat/prawns from costco. What we buy will generally last around 6 weeks. We also buy bin bags/loo roll and kitchen roll from there. It ends up being cheaper and its better quality so lasts longer. Then top up bread/milk/ fruit and veg from our high street shops m&s/asda. We dont eat much bread or cheese (a loaf lasts us a month in the fridge) We manage to eat out once/twice a week. Thats not included in the amount listed.
