A friend shops at Aldi and Farm Foods for family of 4 and tells me she does food shop for £60 -£75 a week.

She batch cooks a lot, uses frozen fruit and veg and not too much meat so maybe its true but it just seems so incredibly low!!

Some of my food bills have been nearer £200 in recent months so I've been feeling like I'm doing something wrong after speaking to her.

What are you spending each week?

£100-125/week two adults two cats. I do cook from scratch and I like certain brands that may cost more.

Askandyforcompo · 17/10/2026 12:21

£200 a week at least for 2 adults and two cats. That's for 3 meals a day at home.

CarryOnRewardless · 17/10/2026 12:36

I budget for £150 a week for 2 adults, a 12 year old and a dog.
We usually do a meal plan for dinners for the week and order for those and packed lunch things from Morrisons each week and get it delivered. Not tempted then to put loads of other stuff in the trolley.
Anything we’ve forgotten our nearest supermarket is Lidl so I’ll go in there

Rawrrawr1 · 17/10/2026 12:57

Todays shop £110, last week under £100.. 2 adults, 1 child.. this includes packed lunches for school/work plus dinners. Mainly Aldi shop, with very specific items from either Asda or Morrisons.

Randomamsi · 17/10/2026 07:54

Yeah I'm finding it hard to believe to be honest, maybe she spends that then does a top up as that can't be it.

I think she buys a lot of veg for her batch cooking from Farm Foods which dies save a lot though

My £40 a week for 2 adults is easily doable and if I was on my own i would do it for less.

£15 ppl is more than £2 a day. If you have porridge or toast for breakfast, a sandwich & fruit / hm snack for lunch (or leftovers) and a batch cooked meal for dinner that is easily doable.

It's where and how you shop and what discounts you have. If you are savvy & use all the deals & loyalty schemes and get 5% off all your shopping with discounts (farmfoods you get coupons off first so it's more like 10% - plus they have quality brands, butter with a taste award for 99p) then it's eminently possible.

Sainsburys does 2 x basa fillets for £1.79, i buy them on 3 for 2 and then save with giftcards so it's just over a £ the. 50-75% at end of day for meat / fish / veg / fruit / bread etc - most goes in freezer.

Dogdilemma01 · 17/10/2026 13:24

I spend approximately £300 per week, this includes anything and everything you need from a supermarket ( not just food) for 4 adults and 4 dogs. Both myself and Husband work professional jobs and I have a chronic illness so cooking everything from scratch is mot am option. I fond keeping to this budget a struggle 😢

alwaysbehindascreen · 17/10/2026 13:52

mines hard to work out.

2 weeks ago there was me, ds21 and ds26 here for 5 nights then add in dp for 2 nights

last week I worked away all week, so dp was at his home, ds21 had gone back to uni and ds26 was home alone

this week it's me and ds26 all week and dp on the weekend.

I do a big shop on pay day. That's around £350. Which includes cleaning products and toiletries. It's a mixture of one brand and branded.

Then I spend about £30 a week on top ups.

Also have about 2/3 takeaways per month. which costs about £40-£50 a time.

i do all my shopping on line which I find easier to control the total. I don't go in with a meal plan, I look what's on offer and meal plan around that.

GeraldThePufferSponge · 17/10/2026 14:01

I spent £42 this week for just me but that’s using meat I’ve already got in the freezer - would be about £55 otherwise. I could get it cheaper but I love Bold Beans 😍

BCBird · 17/10/2026 14:19

Between 80 to 100- 1 adult!!!

BCBird · 17/10/2026 14:22

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 17/10/2026 12:04

uk average spend is 35-45 per person per week
so myself and DD we spend approx 320 a month plus £40 on school lunch so we are at top end but it does include all cleaning, laundry, toilet paper and basic toiletries like hand soap toothpaste shower gel shampoo etc ( not skincare )

so a family of 4 would be around 140-180 a week
if you have little kids food would be less but if you include cleaning supplies and nappies it would be more again

I don't understand how one person can eat well for 30 to 40.pound a week? Maybe it's not being able to eat well. Grim times. We should all be able to eat wellConfused

florasl · 17/10/2026 14:24

I can do £60/70 quite easily for our family (feeding 4 as the baby doesn’t eat yet!) from Aldi alongside a £150 Costco shop every two months for things like washing powder, toilet roll, cheese, meat, eggs and snacks. I do batch cook a lot and make baked goods for packed lunches. I also make things like pizza dough, wraps, batches of sauces, soup, stock etc myself and bulk a lot of dishes with finely diced soffrito mix to include veg in my quite pick children’s food.

Pack lunch snacks are also hugely cheaper at Costco, yo-yo bears are 5 for £3 at the supermarket, the Costco version is 42 for £7. Cheese string equivalents are 24 packs for around £6 compared to 4 for £2 at supermarkets.

We don’t drink though which I think can quickly increase a shopping bill!

PinkMicrowave · 17/10/2026 14:29

About £60-70 per week for me and one child. I cook from scratch but can afford meat/fish/fresh berries and other "nice" foods out of that.

Hayley1256 · 17/10/2026 14:31

So there's me and DP plus DD10 who is with us half the time. None of us are huge breakfast lovers so only really have this on weekends.

Food wise I probs spend around £100 a week plus a £15-20 top up shop. We eat well and I could bring this down by batch cooking, eating less steak, buying cheaper eggs etc.

We spend about £25 a month on cleaning stuff, laundry stuff, shower gels, toothpaste, soaps etc.

Then we spend around £220 on wine, other drinks, electrolytes, bone brough etc

Batch cooking really helps.

We've got 2 sausage, fennel and lentil casseroles, 2 chillis, 4 Kormas and a meatball pasta bake in the freezer.

Economy of scale, plus laziness, is a winner. I buy 20 chipolatas, much cheaper than buying a 6pk 3 times. Then multiply up the other ingredients and make 3 meals of the casserole in one go. Eat one that night. Freeze the other 2.

Bought some meatballs last week, noticed they were on their last day (should have been dinner a couple of nights back, but we ended up having large lunch out) so cooked them up, chucked in spare onion, sauce, garlic, combined with pasta and cheese. Lovely pasta bake for another night.

Old me would have just chucked them, but making sure you use everything has probably taken 10% off our total bill. Even if it means putting a slightly odd combination together, we just eat it.

Stops food wastage and really helps budget.

Mushroomstomatoes · 17/10/2026 14:52

we have 2 adults and 1 dog, shop comes to around £120 every week. Sometimes more if we need toilet paper, washing up pods or bin bags (£4 for 10 x 70L bin bags!!) I also try to buy non brand where possible and I’m vegy so very little meat ever bought.

5 years ago I was spending £50 a week on the same stuff.

Iamblossom · 17/10/2026 15:52

3 adults. Usually between £200-250 a week. In Lidl. Includes a few bottles of wine, and dog food. It's a stupid amount but we eat a lot of fruit, fresh veg and meat

muddyford · 17/10/2026 16:29

Just me now, plus two dogs (their food is c£45 a month). Mine is about £50 a week. I eat very well. I've restarted cooking so there are two chilli con carnes and two Bolognese sauces in the deep freeze. Making shepherd's pie bases tomorrow so two of those will go in. I roast a chicken once a month or so and make stock for risotto. I have been keeping a record of what I spend on food since I was widowed four months ago.

But in essence it's just 7 x each of Breakfasts, lunches & dinners.

Breakfast can be porridge, home made granola, toast. Greek yoghurt. Frozen fruit or bananas.

Lunches some kind of sandwich, seasonal fruit, hm snack - or leftovers.

Dinners - if you make a massive batch cook (8 or more portions) several times over it can cost very little but still be full of nutrition.

Lots of homemade flapjacks etc. Value oats are 85p & free range eggs x 10 £1.90 in sainsburys. 2.5kg bag of potatoes £1.32.

We are still eating up the 8p Easter Veg Wars broccoli from the freezer. We pick enough free blackberries and prep enough free cooking apples to last through winter - add added to porridge, overnight oats, flapjacks, crumbles etc.

2 adults and 4 kids - I am struggling to get it under 250.

Is that per week? We have the same number of people. I feel like Im constantly topping up. Sick of the sight of shops 😆

Yeah, it is per week. We do one 'big shop' per week that ranges from 220 - 240 and then top ups for milk, bread etc. I have suggested us eating less meat to try to keep costs a bit lower but the family are not keen!

WhichDoorIsOut · 18/10/2026 07:10

£150 per week on average for three adults and one dog, this covers all meals as we don’t eat out much, very rarely get takeaways, don’t buy Costa/Starbucks etc. We do eat very well and could reduce the bill if we needed to.
We do the Tesco Clubcard Plus for £8 a month and then get 10% off two shops so I’m pretty good at getting the most out of that, I stock up on non-perishable items when I’m using the 10% discount and combine it with the store offers, we’re fortunate to have decent storage space though. I also bulk-buy certain things from Amazon.
Some branded goods I just refuse to buy as I think they’re a rip off, eg Heinz, and a few people have mentioned washing pods but I think these work out expensive compared to powder.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 18/10/2026 07:16

If it was just me; I could easily feed myself for £40 a week. I did it for years (£30 back then). I got through one load of bread a week for toast at breakfast - £1.50. Milk - £2. Bag of 4 jacket potatoes were £1, usually had this twice a week or so. Bag of pasta 60p, bag of rice £1. Bag of apples, bunch of bananas, satsumas - £5 all together. Then some meat items- mince, chicken and pork chops usually about £10 all together. Then the added stuff to make them into something - onions, tinned tomatoes, some green veg, pesto, grated cheese, about £10 on that. And that’s £30.

Of course there were things like loo roll and coffee etc, but the core was easily doable for £30.

Brendayouknowthatyouremuchtoolazy · 18/10/2026 07:40

Me, adult DD - Food plus toiletries plus cat food - pretty consistently around £130. A year or so ago I'd have been horrified at a £100+ shop, now it's a rare event to get it under.

NerdyBird · 18/10/2026 08:00

I spend about £100 a week at Tesco for 2 adults, 1 tween and a cat. This includes household, basic toiletries and cat food and litter. I don’t buy alcohol or too many snacks, and the tween doesn’t eat meat. We eat ok, but it’s not gourmet food.

A few years ago that amount fed 4 people, and included my now late husband who liked his food and was an amazing cook. Even longer ago it fed 5 of us (adult child now only at home intermittently between uni and travelling).

Seems like £100 a week has been our budget forever but covers a lot less now.

goudacheese · 18/10/2026 08:12

Around £80 for 2 adults. I buy lots of tinned lentils, chick peas, butter beans etc to bulk up meals with lots of veg and less meat/fish. We've cut out snacking on rubbish and have fruit and lidl Greek yoghurt.
